Charles,

Airplane mode also turns off the phone function.

It is almost impossible to turn off all the data usage, and the minimum plan is more than enough if you use it carefully. You didn't say who your provider is, but your are probably stuck with a data plan and you pay for it either way, so you might as well use it.

The data usage is probably just the iPhone checking for updates and email.

Brent,

I didn't realize that Airplane also turns off the phone. Thanks for pointing that out. This is my first smart phone so for me the learning curve is rather steep.

I have the Verizon 20 GB plan. I suppose that as long as I don't start watching videos or playing online games I should be alright. I'm just a little paranoid about going over the limit and having to pay the extra costs.

I do recall being told by a sales person at Verizon that the iPhone would give you a warning when you reached 95% of your data package and again at 98%. Do you know if that is correct?

Re: Moving apps from 3GS to 4S

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I went into Best Buy to check out the 4S. I didn't plan to upgrade that day. However, when they offered $123 for my 2-year-old 3GS, I decided to make the move. Unfortunately, my last 3GS backup was about a month ago. Bad move, I know. So I have to set it up as a new phone.

Best Buy moved my Contacts and Photos to the new 4S before wiping my 3GS. I'll have to move the apps and data I want via iTunes. I was wondering if there was some way for me to select and organize the apps I want on the 4S before I hook it up via USB to sync for the first time? Or should I plug it in, authorize it and then start working on the app transfer?

To complicate matters, my MacMini is running Snow Leopard while my iPad 2 and 4S run 5.0.1. I have the iPad and iPhone syncing Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks and Notes via iCloud. To avoid duplicates, I haven't been syncing Contacts via iTunes though I'd like to if I didn't wind up with duplicates. Ironically, the note on syncing Contacts in iTunes said, "if you are also syncing via iCloud you 'may' get duplicates." Not exactly clear. If Apple doesn't know how it works how should we?

I'm on digest so my reply is a little late.

Don't sync to both your Mac and iCloud pick one. iClould is much more stable than MobileMe was so you should be okay.

Always do a last sync and backup before getting rid of your old phone!

So now that you have the new one with your contacts, I would still do a restore as new to wipe those contacts out and sync from iCloud assuming that is where your contacts were stored before. If not your Mac will write them over after your restore is done and you select new device.

As far as apps, wait until the first sync is done that moves your contacts over. When its done then start selecting your apps to use. I have so many apps that I use that stores data with the all during backup and I would be pissed beyond belief now without getting that data back with the latest info. A month old would be devastating for me.

Apple Finally Lets You Delete Embarrassing Pictures From Photo Strea

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple Finally Lets You
Delete Embarrassing Pictures From Photo Stream via Wired: Gadget Lab by
Charlie Sorrel on 12/14/11

With iOS 5.1, users will no longer have to wait a whole month for their
photos to disappear from Photo Stream. Photo Charlie Sorrel

One almost inexplicable omission from iOS5's Photo Stream was the lack
of a delete button for pictures. For those who haven't used it, or just
don't remember, Photo Stream automatically sends photos taken with iOS
devices up to iCloud, and then shares them with all your other
iCloud-connected devices.

Thus, any picture that was added to the Photo Stream, whether dodgy
screenshots, drunken snaps or pictures accidentally dragged into iPhoto
on the Mac would linger for 30 days or until you'd taken another 1,000
photos. Like a roofie, the only thing to do was to wait for it to work
its way through the system.

Now, amongst the bug fixes in the second beta version of iOS 5.1,
pictures can be deleted from Photo Stream, according to the release
notes leaked variously over the internet (supposedly for developers'
eyes only):

Photos taken using iOS 5.1 can be deleted from Photo Stream on your
device and will be removed automatically from Photo Stream on your
other iOS 5.1 devices. Older photos can be manually deleted from your
iOS 5.1 devices

I'm guessing that you'll also be able to delete photos from your iPhoto
in future updates.

Why wasn't this in there from the beginning? We'll probably never know
for sure, but it seems likely that Apple just didn't want to overload
the iCloud servers at launch, what with a new iPhone, a new iOS version
and Siri all coming in the same week. Hopefully iOS 5.1 will be
released to the public soon: Right now I'm scared to fire up my iPad's
Photos app in public.

Upgrading Two iPhones With One Purchase

Posted by: "Robert (Bob) P Andris" bob@andrisfamily.net   bobandris

Bill and others,

Since you have upgraded your iPhone more times than anyone else I know, I wanted to ask for the procedure to pass on your old one.

I currently have two different iPhones (AT&T) in my family account. I have an iPhone 4 that I'm going to upgrade to a new 4S; and I have a 3GS that I would like to upgrade to the old 4. My procedure for the first portion is to simply go to Apple's online store to order the 4S upgrade using the current iPhone 4's phone number. I'm pretty sure this will work with no hassle. It's the second half I'm fuzzy on.

Now I want to change the old iPhone 4's number to that of the the current 3GS and retire the 3GS. Could you help with this part?

Thanks,
Bob

The size of the SIM card in the 4 and the 4S is the same. The 3GS is different.

You might want to consider telling them you want to upgrade the 3GS to the 4S, then when you get it, just switch the micro-SIM cards between the 4 and the 4S.

I did exactly that to accomplish exactly what you want to accomplish.

Let me answer that. You need to go into an AT&T store to work the changes.

You will certainly be able to activate your new 4S if they ship it to your door, without a hassle.
But if you want to activate your old 4 you will need to go to the store and they typically will want to put in a new SIM card for the number from the 3G then deactivate the 3G.

And for the record I upgrade to every iphone on day 1 of it's release too. :-)

The SIMs are tied to the phone numbers that are assigned to the phone!
If he wants to upgrade his 4 then he can't use the 3GS SIM.
The 4 will still have a SIM that is tied to that number, which means 2 new SIMs versus 1.

How do I get rid of pins? I want to clear everything off the map, just have generic map application again. It is stuck in the mode of giving directions. I don't want directions. I want to clear the pin completely.

Netflix has just updated its iOS app with a nicer user interface
following an overhauled Android app from a month ago. Netflix version

Netflix said, including the United States, Canada and Latin America.
The new interface provides access to twice as many television shows and
movies available for streaming.

Interestingly, the app is now available in Latin America for both the
iPhone and iPad just as Apple announced the arrival of both the iTunes
Store with iTunes Match in Latin America and Apple TV in Brazil.
Netflix for iOS is a free download (a Netflix subscription is
required). Video out is supported on the iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and
fourth-generation iPod Touch 4G. Full release notes after the break.

Updates to the Gmail app for iOS

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Updates to the Gmail
app for iOS via Gmail Blog by The Gmail Team on 12/14/11
Posted by Ingrid Fielker, Software Engineer

When we launched the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, we said
we were just getting started and would continue to release updates
regularly. Today we updated the app with some new features and
interface improvements.

We've added the ability to set a custom signature for your mobile
messages and a vacation responder, both available through the gear icon
at the top of the menu view. We've also improved labels with support
for nested labels:

Additionally, if you are using iOS 5, we've changed the notification
sound so that it's easier to distinguish when you've received an email.

We've also got another fun feature to make your language even more
colorful (in a good way!). In the Gmail app and Gmail for mobile you
can now open up a canvas and scribble a message that will be attached
to your email. It's perfect for sending a quick sketch that is hard to
express in words or adding a fun graphic to make your email more
personal.

Scribbles support different colors, brush sizes, lines, erasers and
spray paint. This example was created in the Gmail app on an iPad:

Behind the scenes, we're continuing to work on highly requested
features like banner notifications, multiple login support and the
ability to send-as from any account already configured in Gmail. We
want to make sure these are done right as we continue to improve the
Gmail app.

The update is available in the App Store and works on all devices
running iOS 4+.

'Steve Jobs: Billion Dollar Hippy' BBC documentary air

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: 'Steve Jobs: Billion
Dollar Hippy' BBC documentary airs tonight via 9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn
on 12/14/11

BBC is getting set to air a new documentary entitled 'Steve Jobs:
Billion Dollar Hippy' tonight at 9:00pm on BBC HD and BBC Two.
According to the Telegraph, the documentary apparently presents a more
"ruthless image of Jobs" where Wozniak reveals that Jobs reduced him to
tears following the release of Walter Isaacson's 'Steve Jobs' bio
(click the image above for the clip of Woz from the doc):

Jobs, for instance, tricked a young Wozniak into writing code for a
computer game but pocketed the majority of the payment for the project
from Atari himself. Wozniak admits on the programme that he cried when
he heard about Jobs's scam following the release of a book on Jobs.

The doc is hosted by Evan Davis, and features appearances from Tim
Berners-Lee, Rita Clifton, and Stephen Fry. It will also of course
include interviews with Steve Wozniak and others that were close to
Apple and Jobs. The program profiles Avie Tevanian, who worked with
Jobs as head of software at Apple until 2006, who tells a story of
trying to get Jobs to join in on a stag party:

Tevanian organised Jobs's stag party in 1991, but struggled to persuade
other friends to join them. "They kept saying, 'nah, I don't think it's
appropriate that I go', or 'no I'm too busy, I can't make it'.
Everybody had a reason not to come."

Woz talked to Radio 4 this morning about the documentary and, among
other things, talked about Jobs and the Apple culture:

I just wanted to be in engineering only – I never wanted to run a
company, never wanted to run things, step on other people – Steve very
clearly did, and wanted to be a top executive and a really important
thinker in the world…. Apple does a lot of conservative [things] – we
control things – and has very little tolerance…Even if an engineer told
a friend something and it got out… you're fired!

I have a mid-2009 MBP I recently erased the HD on. I redownloaded OS X Lion and installed and updated. I did not put any email on it. Lion automatically checked with Apple to see if I bought the it and apparently also checked to see if I had an iCloud email addy because when Lion was completely installed, I had my iCloud email setup too. I did the usual click the minus sign to delete the account but it came back. I only want the account off this particular MBP. I haven't tried anything else yet as I don't want to have the account deleted from my iPhone 4, iPad 2, iMac or MBA. Any help would be appreciated. The MBP is going to my Dad.

Recommendations for 3rd party manual for the 4s?

Got my 4s today and will be making the appt. offered by Verizon for a short tutorial by a techie there. It's my first smart phone.

Has anyone bought and used a good little manual for this, or at least the iPhone 4 that they'd recommend. A pamphlet came with my phone. I love having a paper manual for those times when I'm waiting around in places or want a comfy chair. I do grow weary of doing SO much on a computer screen.
