How to make a MBA act like a clock radio
Posted by: "Ken" avlisk@cox.net avliska
Thu Dec 15, 2011 5:30 am (PST)
I'm trying to keep my new MBAir streaming iTunes radio at night, providing a clock-radio-like function. I set the computer on the nightstand, turn the keyboard lights and screen illumination all the way down, and settle in for a long winter's nap. But I can only get about 10 to 15 minutes until the streaming stops. The computer is still on, but I have to click the "Play" arrow to get the streaming started again.
I've gone into Energy Saver Preferences and set them at everything from 1 minute to "Never", but that doesn't seem to change this 15 minute stoppage at all. I'm powered with the Apple AC power brick that came with the MBAir. There must be some other setting that I'm missing, as my old MacBook would happily stream the iTunes radio all night long. How do I get the MBAir to do the same?
Any suggestions? And thanks.

I agree on the 8-Gig RAM bit. If you ask for RAM at the Apple Store, it costs Rs. 32000 to upgrade to 8-Gigs. However, in the open market, you can get 2x4 Gig Sims for much less at approximately Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000 depending on which brand and on which day you buy. I'd advise you to stay within Simmtronics, Transcend, Kingston. Corsair RAM is more expensive, but the Apple Store guy advised its not recommended for the Macbook Pro. You can get that for Mac Pros where you're putting in RAM much higher than 8 Gigs.
Agreed on the part of the Androids being available here sooner. But I'd rather be without a smart phone than have an android. I've never had a good review about any android from any user. Even the top of the line Xperia users say, "It's just like an iPhone" and complain about so many small things. It's just better to get an iPhone or iPad. Apart from battery life on the iPhone, there's never a major quirk that stops you from working, unless you're jailbroken or unlocking unofficially. That's the only time you can be out there and stuck with a non-working device. Otherwise, the iPhones have usually been reliable with all the users I know. Have users in the family and my office - n all love them.

It had been in the shop once a month for the last 4 months of it's life. On the last night, I had just taken re-delivery of the unit and it seemed to be OK, but occasionally just a little flaky. I called Apple support and just relayed to them, kind of off-the-cuff, that I was still having a bit of a problem. Not being irate or nasty. Within 3 minutes I was on the phone to a senior person and he offered to exchange my 3 year old iMac for a new one. Wow, that was it. They exchanged it, no hassles.

Resolution is a nebulous term...
I run my 17" MBP at 1980x1200 = 2,376,000 pixels
The new screen would be 2880x1800 = 5,184,000 pixels
Dividing gives 2.18 times, still impressive.
But how big would the screen need be to be readable at Apple's system default font sizes? Or will this resolution be for use with a new large external monitor?
Still, I yearn for more screen real estate on a single monitor.

The idea of a retina display is to provide greater clarity at the same screen size. If you've used an iPhone 3GS alongside an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, you'd know the difference. Its basically to make the text look sharper. The dot pitch is so small, that with a naked eye, it extends beyond the limits of resolution for an ordinary person to make out. Which means, you get a screen experience that's as sharp as the best offset printing.

This is relative to viewing distance. A small screen like the iPhone's is
viewed from very close. Such high res would be wasted on a large monitor
further away.

As do I, and the high res screen makes a huge difference. I look at
other screens and can't believe the difference in clarity.

As close as you would use an iPhone?
But I wouldn't want to use less than my PowerBook has (1440x960) at laptop
distance.

in my case as well, i don't think there's much difference as to how close i hold the iphone or the macbook pro. in fact, while i am slouching at my desk (which i shouldn't ever be), the screen is closer to my face, as compared to when I am checking the contacts on my phone to make a call.

I've starting losing application icons. There is nothing showing in icon view and I have to double click on the apps name to get it to open.
What does one rebuild to get these icons to reappear?
I had tried starting up with option-command pressed (old muscle memory ;-), which of course did nothing.
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Bill

Go to:
[hard drive icon] --> Users --> [your user name] --> Library -->
Preferences --> com.apple.finder.plist
If you are running Lion, the user Library folder will be invisible.
You can access it by holding down the Option key while clicking on
the Finder's Go menu. "Library" will then appear as one of the
choices in the Go menu.
Drag "com.apple.finder.plist" to the desktop and restart your Mac.
If things get better, you can drag the copy of com.apple.finder.plist
that is on your desktop to the trash.
If things don't get better, I'd try using Disk Utility to Repair
Permissions, and I'd use this program to clear your caches:
CacheOutX (free)
http://www.trilateralsystems. com/cacheoutx/
If none of the above helps, I'd try creating a new user account, log
into it, and see if the problem is gone. If it is, we can go from
there.

Sometimes a larger monitor provides a way to keep multiple windows open in a larger format. Additionally, the larger display eases some of the strain on eyes after long hours of working on documents.
Irrespective of the MB Pro display's quality, sometimes you can't beat size.
This is another one of those personal choices in which there are some technical advice to be listened to but the choice is personal preference.

I have an iMac, which shows the largest number of pixels it will display
at 1680x 1050.
Is that the highest resolution, IE, the native resolution for my monitor?
I use the stretched version of my monitor's 1024 x 768, for various
reasons, and it's fine by me. Just an anecdotal comment...

Not sure that this will help, Doris, however when things get wonky with my apps, when they stop doing (or start doing badly) actions that normally had been okay, then I just shut down and do a Safe Boot, after which I do a normal boot.
That usual clears things up. I often don't reboot for many days (even weeks) on end and, as a consequence, computer functioning deteriorates. I suppose that this deterioration is related to the type of work one does.
Probably text work (writing) and nothing else will not much affect a comp's ability to function, however (as in your case) working with photos (reducing, cropping, moving, etc) places more demand on the computer.
Perhaps even just shutting down and rebooting (without the Safe Boot) might just clear up your issue. Give that a try first. Oneal

Re: screen res

Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:44 pm (PST)
The recent thread about monitors has got me thinking about 'resolution'.
I understand that there are (at least, perhaps) two ways of looking at the issue of 'resolution'. My conception of resolution is linked to pixels per unit area, which for screens probably means pixels / centimeter squared.
It is my understanding that the resolution of a 24" desktop monitor is the same as the resolution of a 27" desktop monitor. In other words, the # of pixels / area unit is identical for both.
The bigger monitor is only larger; it does not produce a better picture.
QUESTION: Do desktop monitors produce better images than laptop screens? I don't have a working desktop monitor currently, so I can't make a comparison check.
The technologies are different. Is there a point, from an 'optimal' (whatever that means) viewing perspective, where cramming more pixels per area unit becomes counterproductive?
More further, Otto said (on 14 Dec.) that "[despite] halv[ing] each dimension [in terms of pixels], [he'd] expect the sharpness ... to be retained".
Is image acuity not a function of linear pixelation? In other words, the more pixels along each axis, the better (up to a point). Wouldn't reducing the # of pixels in each direction also be counterproductive, even if the aspect ratio were maintained.
Thanx. Oneal

In the *old* days, pixels weren't necessarily square. Today that's not generally the case. Resolutions are normally described in pixels per inch or per centimeter.

Are they?
Does the LED-lit LCD screen on my laptop use a different technology than the LED-lit LCD screen of the "Cinema Display" in the other room?
> Is there a point, from an 'optimal' (whatever that means) viewing perspective, where cramming more pixels per area unit becomes counterproductive?
1. When that particular user's eyes can't tell the difference any more.
2. When you can no longer *afford* more pixels per inch.

Relatedly, will anything I receive via USB (let's say video or audio) automatically be accessible? I'm not clear on the concept of connecting cables.

The only equipment you need, you probably have - a cassette player with an audio out, or line out, or headphone jack; plus an appropriate cable - a mini RCA, for example. The software you need is something like Audio Hijack Pro. I use that and it works like a champ for me. There probably are numerous other software packages out there that will do the same job, but I quit looking when I found Audio Hijack Pro.

Thanx for the headsup, John. I've also got AHP. Did not occur to me to do what you've done. I've used it mainly to record internet conversations. Oneal

FWIW, I got a cheap webcam as a "prize" for visiting a local car
dealer. It's USB 2.0, but plugging it in to my G5 Mac produces no
results. Not recognized in System Profiler, either.
