Going back to your original post, I thought it might be worth trying to replicate the problems you encountered. So I downloaded 'PlustekOpticalBook3800_v1.0.0.0.4.dmg', opened it and ran the installer. It ran without any error messages and so far as I can see the application is correctly installed in /Applications/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/PlustekOpticalBook3800.app'.

The application launches with a dialog to the effect no scanner can be found, which is to be expected because I don't have it. The application quits normally, and that is all I can do with it without the scanner.

In /LibraryApplication Support/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/ there are three files:
DocAction.plist
RegisterDoc.app
settings.plist
all of which seem normal, so far as it is possible to tell just be looking at them.

So I wonder what the difference is between your setup and mine which results in the problems you see which I don't? I have an Intel Mac Pro running 10.6.8.

The application does start on mine, and the scanner head runs across the platen.

But nothing appears in the preview window, and the software won't alter from PDF to scan.

It has baffled me totally, and I have installed and used many scanners over the years.

I wonder if the problem lies with '/Library/Plustek/OpticalBook3800.app'? In your original post you reported an error message "chmod: Unable to change
file mode on /Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook 3800: Operation not permitted". Is it possible the app is misbehaving because it cannot access the 'plists' that should be in that directory?

It would certainly be worth looking to see whether you have actually got the files 'DocAction.plist' and 'settings.plist' in that directory and also checking the permissions. They are normally 'rwxr-xr-x' (ie 755).

If the permissions for /Library/ are in fact the usual 755, only the owner has permission to write to the directory. Hence the installer would have to change the mode to allow it to write to the sub directories containing the 'plist' files. Since (judging by the error message) it was unable to do so, the 'plists' are probably missing. If they are missing, then it could well be the application cannot function properly.

Have a good look at /Library and see whether the Plustek stuff is there or not.

Les,

I can help translating. I'm not too good in expressing myself in English since I can't think of all these computer terms - but I do understand everything of all your posts and I'm a native German speaker and I know the German computer terms. Just let me know.

Alan

Thanks for the help.

I have the three files in the Library/Application Support folder. I have used Get Info to check permissions on all three files and I am set to read and write for all.

However, if I double click on RegisterDock, that is when the chmod message comes up, although the file does then open in text edit with all the Terminal style commands.

These come up as:

tell application "Finder"
#do shell script "sudo -u $USER chmod 777 \"/Library/Application Support/Plustek\""
do shell script "sudo -u $USER chmod 777 \"/Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook3800\""

do shell script "sudo -u $USER chmod 777 \"/Users/Documents\""
#do shell script "sudo -u $USER chmod 777 \"/Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook3800\""

set the DockExist to do shell script "sudo -u $USER grep -q PlustekOpticalBook3800 $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist; echo $?"
if the DockExist is "1" then
do shell script "sudo -u $USER defaults write $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add \"<dict><key>tile-data</key><dict><key>file-data</key><dict><key>_CFURLString</key><string>/Applications/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/PlustekOpticalBook3800.app</string><key>_CFURLStringType</key><integer>0</integer></dict></dict></dict>\""
end if
set the LoginExist to do shell script "sudo -u $USER grep -q PlustekOpticalBook3800 $HOME/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist; echo $?"
if the LoginExist is "1" then
do shell script "sudo -u $USER defaults write $HOME/Library/Preferences/loginwindow AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary -array-add \"<dict><key>Path</key><string>/Applications/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/PlustekOpticalBook3800.app</string><key>Hide</key><integer>0</integer></dict>\""
end if
end tell

Does this look right??? I haven't got a clue personally!

Is there something else I should do to check the rwxr etc permissions? Sorry to ask but this is getting beyond my normal level of superficial dabbling!

I wonder if the problem lies with '/Library/Plustek/OpticalBook3800.app'? In your original post you reported an error message "chmod: Unable to change

Hi Dan

Thanks for the continuing support. Sorry I couldn't look in depth yesterday but was at the hospital all day!

I apologise if my earlier message was incorrectly phrased, I am honestly getting a bit out of my depth in this, so I will try to be a bit clearer.

I am logged in as the Admin, I am the only user of this machine.

Using System Profiler the Plustek driver is 32 bit

I cannot find a Plustek Twain plug-in anywhere on the system.

CS5.5 Twain Import sees the Epson 4990 not the Plustek. Not sure how I check the 32/64 bit - when I do Get Info I don't see anything about this.

CS2 File Import sees the Epson not the Plustek and both are in 32bit mode.

Graphic Converter and Image Capture do not see the Plustek.

As you will see from the message just posted in response to Alan Fry's suggestions, the three plist files are present and I have read and write permissions on all three.

The problem file would seem to be the RegisterDoc, as soon as I click on that the chmod message comes up although the file then opens in TextEdit, with a string of commands that mean nothing to me. This file I have listed in my reply to Alan.

I emailed the developer yesterday morning first thing but heard nothing, and emailed again this afternoon to the UK and German offices, but still nothing.

I hope this is better phrased! I do appreciate the help. I think it's just a badly written driver for Macs. I have emailed several retailers asking if they have sold to other Mac users and if they have had any problems but none have answered, I suppose I was a bit too optiimistic on that!

Regards

Les

Are you normally not logged in as an admin user? Do you have a

Check to see whether the Plustek driver and Plustek Twain plugin for
Photoshop is 32 or 64 bit.

If it's is 32 bit, then try launching Photoshop in 32 bit mode. This
is done by using Get Info on Photoshop app icon before you launch it.

So the installer has at least succeeded in creating the directories and writing the three files. So far so good.

Yes. This AppleScript is contained in 'OpticalBook3800.app/Contents/Resources/Scripts.You can access it directly by a ctrl-click on the 'RegisterDoc.app' and select 'Show Package Contents'.

On my machine it has certainly run and done all the things it should have done. For example the first line (ignoring the line commented out) sets the permissions for /Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook3800' to 777 (all the world and his wife can do everything -- read, write and execute). It has done just that.

Towards the end of the script there is an instruction to add a string '/Applications/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/PlustekOpticalBook3800.app' to '~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist' and it has dutifully done that too.

So, on my machine it seems the script has run and done what it is intended to do.

On your machine however it seems you get the "chmod: Unable to change file mode on /Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook 3800: Operation not permitted" which implies that the AppleScript jibs at the first line which is:

"do shell script "sudo -u $USER chmod 777 \"/Library/Application Support/Plustek/OpticalBook3800"

In this line the modifier -u stands for 'user' (ie your short user-name) and $USER is the environment variable holding your user-name. I fI type (in Terminal):

echo $USER

it returns 'alanfry' which is my account user-name. I guess the same command on your machine would return 'lesstreater'?

My guess is the problem on your machine is that $USER is not returning the correct user-name for some reason, so that the 'sudo' (effectively super_user_do) command is rejected. The next thing to do I would suggest is run 'echo $USER' in Terminal and see what you get back.

> Is there something else I should do to check the rwxr etc permissions? Sorry to ask but this is getting beyond my normal level of superficial dabbling!

I have a feeling there is something adrift in your account, rather than there is anything wrong with the Plustek installer.

It will be interesting to know what 'echo $USER' returns.

My apologies for a typo;- the line in my last message reading:

should read:

In this line the modifier -u stands for 'user' (ie your short user-name) and $USER is the environment variable holding your user-name. I fI type (in Terminal):

echo $USER

it returns 'alanfry' which is my account user-name. I guess the same command on your machine would return 'lesstreater'?

My guess is the problem on your machine is that $USER is not returning the correct user-name for some reason, so that the 'sudo' (effectively super_user_do) command is rejected. The next thing to do I would suggest is run 'echo $USER' in Terminal and see what you get back.

It will be interesting to know what 'echo $USER' returns.

Hi Alan

Maybe this is getting somewhere!

When I go into Accounts pane in SysPrefs, at the top I have "My Account" which is "Les Streater-a', marked as Admin

There is then a line, followed by "Other Accounts"

This lists a Guest Account, marked as sharing only, then another heading - "Groups", which has "lesstreater-a" with no reference to admin or sharing or anything.

When I [bravely for me] go into Terminal and type echo $USER it returns lesstreater-a, but surely this should be the first one, Les Streater-a? the difference is the two capital letters and the gap between the names.

Do I delete the Groups account in sys prefs? And if so, could this screw up something else?

And where has the Groups Account come from anyway? Or shouldn't I raise another can of worms at this stage.....

Okay, I have Info clicked on a number of different applications, and permissions seem to vary, although they all work.

For example:
Acrobat Pro X, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Garageband (never used so virgin!), iDVD, Word 2011 and Quark 8 all show System R/W, admin as R/W and Everyone as Read only.

Mail and Word 2008 show System R/W, admin Read Only, everyone Read Only

CCC, Epson Scan and Firefox show lesstreater-a(Me) as R/W, staff Read only and everyone as Read Only

Suitcase has lesstreater-a(Me) as R/W, staff as R/W and everyone as R/W

The really weird one is the Plustek - surprise! This shows:

lesstreater-a(Me) as R/W, unknown as R/W, admin as R/W and everyone as R/W

And I can't delete the unknown entry.

Is this a guide to anything or just a further layer of obfuscation?

You already have a copy. Contact the author and mention your

This seems to me likely to be the problem. $USER returns 'lesstreater-a' which might be taken as referring to the Group Account rather than the Admin Account.

Your admin account short user-name is the name of your home directory, ie the name on the top of the Finder window opened by 'Finder->Go->Home'. If that name is 'lesstreater-a' and that same string turns up also in the context of a 'Group Account', then there is almost certain to be confusion.

There are a few other things you could try which might throw some more light on the situation. Firstly type 'env' (without the quotes) into Terminal (I promise it won't bite!). That will list all the environment variables, including amongst others, USER, LOGNAME, and HOME.

Also in Terminal type 'id -un'. That will return the currently logged in user-name.

Frankly I am at a loss to know what to say. I have no idea where the 'Group Account' could have come from. If you didn't open the account and it serves no purpose, then I suppose it should be deleted. But whether that would, as you say, screwup something else I really don't know. Perhaps someone else could advise what best to do here?

Ok, entered all the options in Terminal, all gave the same result - lesstreater-a

Have deleted the Groups account

Have totally uninstalled the Plustek files, downloaded it again from their website and reinstalled. And then restarted the complete machine.

I immediately get the chmod message again. There is a red 'no entry' flag on the Plustek folder in applications and nothing in Applications support.

If I click on the Plustek applications folder, do Get Info, this stange 'unknown' account is there, which I cannot delete. If I then add either my account, or admin, or both and give them read and write privileges, the 'no entry' symbol disappears and the files are created in Application support.

Even after that I cannot delete the 'unknown' account.

Somewehere the installer script is not seeing my account and is creating this strange 'unknown' account.

Have tried a basic Google search and searched in Apple help but nothing is immediately surfacing.

At least I have conquered a fear of Terminal - well to a limited extent!

Thanks!

Les

ls -ladeO gave the following:

drwx------+ 3 501 wheel - 102 12 Jan 22:52 /Applications/Plustek/OpticalBook3800/PlustekOpticalBook3800.app

does this tell anyone anything new?

Google Wallet

I'm using Starbucks' app on my iPhone 4s, and like it's convenience and ease of use. No more Starbucks cards bulking up my wallet. The techie in me also likes the idea of using the special reader (RFQ? - my memory is getting bad at my age).

In my local Peet's, there's a little sign at the register saying they take "Google Wallet" but it does not appear to be an app available for the iPhone. When I searched (using Google, natch) for it, apparently it's only available for an android phone. Does anyone on this list have any information about why or when such an app might be available for the iPhone?

How about a similar app for any debit or credit card? I'd be very concerned about security if I lost my iPhone, but that can be handled I presume with a shut off or scrambler app to allow me to shut off the iPhone or disable it from afar.

Maybe there's a way to get rid of my ugly leather wallet entirely? Sigh, but what about those courtrooms that demand 2 cards?

Howdy.

Mary, we did have a number of comments here on this issue.

I don't think there is any single solution or fix for it. In other
words, there doesn't seem to be any one thing you can do that will fix
the problem.

iOS 5.1 version is due out soon and it may fix the problem.

Apparently the number of iPhone users experiencing this problem is not
many.

I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 and I have not had this problem.

Here is one of several articles with some suggestiona for improving
this problem.

<http://cydiahelp.com/ios-5-battery-drain-problem-heres-some-tips-to-fix-this/>

I suggest that you do several Yahoo and Google searches on this topic
of iOS 5 battery drain and read about some of the possible fixes. I'm
not even sure if "fix" is the word to use for this problem.

More Seagate FreeAgent Woes

Howdy.

A neighbor with a benighted Seagate FreeAgent 1 TB drive saw it
gradually stop mounting on his Desktop.

He switched from Firewire to USB and it worked a few more times and
then stopped.

Today I helped him remove the bare Seagate Barracuda drive from inside
the case an try in in a Thermaltake BlacX drive dock.

Drive is working fine and back to being used as his Time Machine
external backup.

The FreeAgent case and bridge chip is just a mess and here's another
one that bits the dust.

In our "pod" of 7 town homes, that makes 3 FreeAgents dead in two
years. Not a great record.

I've had that same experience with clients. Running Disk Warrior
will make the disk mountable again, but in time it will refuse to
mount again.

As a result I've been totally avoiding recommending Seagate external
hard drives.

However, their internal drives seem to be fine.

Yes, I think the Seagate FreeAgent cases are pretty bad.

I've just looked on the MacConnection online site and while they sell a
lot of Seagate externals about 75% or more are called FreeAgent
something or other.

Weird things, mostly of no great import, yet annoying nonetheless, are occurring to my 10.6.8–running laptop. I've mentioned before that Actitivity Monitor has not worked for more than a half year and that Mail misbehaves at times. Other things happen too.

What prompts this post is the fact, also long-running, that a certain keystroke shortcut in Safari (^A, which is 'control-a') does not want to work. I must use the menubar (Safari > Window > Arrange in Front) to effect the realigning of all Safari windows neatly midscreen.

In general terms, if knowable, what is producing this drift into operative wonkiness? Why do things that once worked fine no longer work as they used to? Will a (soon) move to Lion (10.7) remedy my still-minor problems, or will I just be bringing them along for the ride?

Thanx. Oneal
