Patina Fills Need for Simple Drawing App for Mac - Published on 12/02/15

Developed by a California company called Atek, Patina echoes the simplicity of Microsoft Paint, the widely used go-to drawing tool for generations of Windows users.
Patina sports a modern and slick appearance, with large tool buttons and color controls. Although more stylish in appearance than Paint, Patina shares the simple feel of Microsoft's popular app. Basic operations, such as drawing and manipulating shapes, setting and changing colors, moving and resizing objects, and doing annotations, are all very straightforward.
Patina's functionality surpasses that of Paint in a number of ways. For example, objects can be rotated at any angle rather than being limited to specific degrees of rotation. Other enhanced features include transparent image saving and a convenient slider for controlling a variety of app functions, such as tool stroke thickness and text font size.
According to Atek company president Dan Rothman, "Many people who have switched over from Windows to Mac love Apple hardware and software but miss Microsoft Paint for doing simple drawings. We evaluated drawing apps for Mac that were currently available and found they were either unrefined open source programs or complex vector applications for designers and artists. There were no OS X apps that could match the user-friendliness of Paint. We aimed to fill that void with Patina."
Rothman added: "With all kinds of people now using Apple computers, unlike in the past when most users were design professionals, the time is right for there to be a simple, user-friendly drawing app for all types of Mac users to enjoy, including adults, students, and children."
Patina, which is currently offered for free on promotion in the Mac App Store through December 9, 2015, opens with a tutorial screen that points out the main features of the app and makes it easy to start using it.

It's based on content that is most relevant for your industry, function, and skills combined with what conversations and content you care about. For the first time, as part of a lightweight onboarding process, you also get to select what content you are interested in, and over time you can also unfollow things that are less valuable to you.
Me represents your professional brand. This is where you can see all things about you - who's viewed your profile, who is commenting on, or sharing your posts. It also offers the most intuitive way of updating your profile that we have ever had, so you can easily spruce up your professional profile to keep things fresh.
Messaging abandons email in favor of a more casual way to stay in touch, allowing you to initiate quicker conversations in a lighter-weight interface. This makes it easy for you to ping someone in your network on a quick question or continue a conversation as you would in real-life.
My Network is a daily briefing of what's happening in your professional network, so you can see in seconds people you may know, new posts from your network and suggestions to keep connected. For example, it will offer prompts to say congrats to a connection celebrating a new role or work anniversary, or send a message to someone in your network when they have written a post on LinkedIn.
By syncing your calendar it will also help you get smart for your next meeting. You'll be prompted to look at the profile of the person you are meeting with that day with details on what shared connections or shared interests you have. This way you can avoid the small talk and have a meaningful conversation.
Search is now 300% faster, and a lot smarter, so you can quickly find people, jobs and groups you're looking for. For example, search for jobs with the title "Marketing" and get results before you even finish typing.
The new app also fully realizes LinkedIn's new multi-app strategy by bringing more focus to the main flagship app. And with the new app launcher feature, it is incredibly seamless to launch into other LinkedIn apps for dedicated and deeper experiences, like Pulse, Groups, Job Search, etc.

Haarlem, Netherlands - The App developer Crunding, today is proud to announce it has changed its name to Impala Studios and merged a number of development branches into one. The developer's portfolio now accounts for the apps Flight +, Flight Companion, Reader for Craigslist, Vegas Slots, Calculator HD, Alarm Clock 4 Free, Alarm Clock HD and Video Tube. The apps, with combined downloads upwards of 65 million, represent some of the most popular content browsing and utility apps in the Amazon, Google and Apple App stores.
Until now, these apps had been released by branches of Crunding BV, an app building company based in the Netherlands. The brands had been introduced to the public separately, so it will be surprising to some that they all belong to the same company. Impala Studios will continue to support and develop the products, providing a recognisable brand for users and advertisers.
Background:
The original developer accounts: FCSS, IAFTT, The Alarm Clock Company, Vegas Casinos, Guies and YY Music Video were set up to represent different groups of products and were developed by Crunding. Crunding was set up in 2009 and will now continue as Impala Studios. As the mobile app market matures, it is becoming more important to form a recognisable brand. Having a single brand will have the dual benefit of letting users communicate with one, trustworthy partner whilst forming a large publisher that is of interest to business partners.
Why are these apps being merged into Impala Studios? "We have a strong focus on utility apps and content browsing through a touch interface," explained Frank List, CTO at Impala Studios. "Video Tube, Reader for Craigslist and IAFTT's flight apps for example, make browsing a huge amount of data a pleasant experience on a tablet or a phone. These apps fit together well, just like our utility apps and there is considerable synergy on a technical level too, in developer knowledge and server infrastructure. Most of all we think that our users and business partners will associate more strongly with Impala Studios than the somewhat impersonal Crunding branches."
What will change? "In the direct future, not much will change. Impala Studios will continue to offer the Apps in Free and Ad-Free editions and we will continue to support the apps," said Peter Schotvanger, CCO at Impala Studios. "Our advertising partners will have more space to advertise and Impala Studios will be more recognisable as a company that continues to innovate in non-intrusive advertising. Vegas Slots: A multi-platform slot machine, running on any iOS and Android device including Amazon Underground and Apple TV. This was developed and maintained by Vegas Slots developer account.
Calculator HD: An old fashioned desktop calculator for the iPad, complete with material buttons and a paper history tape. The app was developed by Guies.
Alarm Clock 4 Free and Alarm Clock HD: Full-featured Alarm Clocks with customizable interface and alarms and integrated weather. Alarm Clock HD also includes News and Twitter integration whilst Alarm Clock 4 Free has a large number of themes to choose from. Alarm Clock HD is the most popular alarm clock next to Apple's pre-installed Clock and is also available for Android and in the Amazon Underground store. Planet Lettra 2.0 - A quirky educational app for iPad and iPhone - Published on 12/02/15

Studio Goojaji today released version 2.0 of its quirky word-building app Planet Lettra for iPad and iPhone. Players build words by dragging letter-filled "smart" bubbles and bumping them together and then feed them to silly creatures on the planet surface. Planet Lettra is an environment for experimenting with letters that gently guides children in the spelling of real words rather than simply rewarding them for success in set spelling-related tasks.
Shawinigan-Sud, Canada - Studio Goojaji today released version 2.0 of its quirky word-building app Planet Lettra for iPad(R) and iPhone(R). In Planet Lettra, users build words by dragging letter-filled bubbles found in the sky above Lettra and bumping them together. Creatures on the planet surface slurp up bubbles dragged near them and react to these snacks by dressing up, playing a tune, spitting out letters or occasionally burping. Unlike other spelling apps, Planet Lettra is an environment for experimenting with letters and word building that gently guides children in the spelling of real words rather than simply rewarding them for success in set spelling-related tasks.
The bubbles are "smart" letter blocks; when a single bubble is bumped into another, they only combine if the result is found at the start of a word Lettra "knows", the number of which the user controls. Bubbles can also be combined two at a time, which lets users build and then hear anything they want, including funny, nonsense words. "The idea for Planet Lettra came from watching my kids play with text-to-speech on our computer," explained Studio Goojaji founder Greg McDonald. "They loved hearing the computer read words, real and nonsense, but struggled using a keyboard. Planet Lettra lets kids enjoy the fun of the computer voice and gain exposure to the spelling of real words without the frustration of hunt-and-peck typing."
The app was first released in May 2015. The upgrades in this new version were suggested by early "travellers" to Planet Lettra and they include adding an all-slurping Glutton creature, allowing players to put the creatures to sleep and to change language in the app (rather than in device Settings). We've also added new costumes for the creatures and added Spanish language support to the app in this major update.

Studio Goojaji today released version 2.0 of its quirky word-building app Planet Lettra for iPad and iPhone. Players build words by dragging letter-filled "smart" bubbles and bumping them together and then feed them to silly creatures on the planet surface. Planet Lettra is an environment for experimenting with letters that gently guides children in the spelling of real words rather than simply rewarding them for success in set spelling-related tasks.
Shawinigan-Sud, Canada - Studio Goojaji today released version 2.0 of its quirky word-building app Planet Lettra for iPad(R) and iPhone(R). In Planet Lettra, users build words by dragging letter-filled bubbles found in the sky above Lettra and bumping them together. Creatures on the planet surface slurp up bubbles dragged near them and react to these snacks by dressing up, playing a tune, spitting out letters or occasionally burping. Unlike other spelling apps, Planet Lettra is an environment for experimenting with letters and word building that gently guides children in the spelling of real words rather than simply rewarding them for success in set spelling-related tasks.
The bubbles are "smart" letter blocks; when a single bubble is bumped into another, they only combine if the result is found at the start of a word Lettra "knows", the number of which the user controls. Bubbles can also be combined two at a time, which lets users build and then hear anything they want, including funny, nonsense words. "The idea for Planet Lettra came from watching my kids play with text-to-speech on our computer," explained Studio Goojaji founder Greg McDonald. "They loved hearing the computer read words, real and nonsense, but struggled using a keyboard. Planet Lettra lets kids enjoy the fun of the computer voice and gain exposure to the spelling of real words without the frustration of hunt-and-peck typing."
The app was first released in May 2015. The upgrades in this new version were suggested by early "travellers" to Planet Lettra and they include adding an all-slurping Glutton creature, allowing players to put the creatures to sleep and to change language in the app (rather than in device Settings). We've also added new costumes for the creatures and added Spanish language support to the app in this major update.
