PadClock makes it easier to set alarms on iPhone

Posted: 31 May 2013 06:07 PM PDT

PadClock Before After

I can’t be the only one that despises the date picker found within the Clock app’s alarm settings. I find that it requires too much thought to set an alarm, especially in the wee hours of the morning when you can just barely open your eyes.

PadClock is a new jailbreak tweak that fixes the cumbersome setup found inside the stock alarm clock. It does so by replacing the original date picker with an easy to use number pad.(...)

Pod2g: Apple could open up iOS by releasing alternate firmware for developers

Posted: 31 May 2013 02:26 PM PDT

jailbroken iphone 4s

Earlier this week, Tim Cook turned some heads when he told folks at the D11 conference that they could expect Apple to “open up more” in the future, in regards to 3rd party developers. The company, as you well know, currently rules iOS with an iron fist.

Unsurprisingly, Cook’s comment has sparked some speculation in the jailbreak community, on what Apple’s plans might be for opening up iOS more. And earlier today, Pod2g weighed in, and he thinks it could do it by releasing alternate firmware…(...)

Hands-on with the new 16GB iPod touch (video)

Posted: 31 May 2013 01:48 PM PDT

16GB iPod touch (teaser 001)

Apple yesterday phased out the fourth-gen iPod touch in favor of a new entry-level $229 16GB model. Basically the fifth-generation, it includes EarPods and has the same four-inch Retina screen, Lightning I/O and the A5 chip as other models – sans the iSight camera and the lanyard hook.

However, there’s one more major difference between this iPod touch and the more capacious models. Ben Pasternak of Sydney, Australia was one of the first buyers and posted a quick hands-on video…(...)

Best Buy $150 trade-in program could net you a free iPhone 5

Posted: 31 May 2013 12:49 PM PDT

iPhone 5 (three-up, profile, front, back, black and white)

In another sign that Best Buy could be clearing stock (or simply enticing customers to pick up an Apple handset), CNET reports the retailer will trade-in your working iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S on Sunday for a $150 credit, which can be redeemed against the purchase of a new iPhone. Given that Best Buy normally sells the entry-level iPhone 5 on a two-year contract for $150, the promotion lets you trade-in your old iPhone and purchase Apple’s latest and greatest handset without paying a dime – of course, excluding the obligatory carrier activation fee and any applicable sales tax…(...)

Galaxy S4 not hurting ‘resilient’ US iPhone sales

Posted: 31 May 2013 12:07 PM PDT

Size comparison (Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5, Martin Hajek 003)

Listening to much of the tech press, you might get the impression Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 would further erode Apple’s share of the smartphone market. One Wall Street firm ended the week on a contrary note, telling investors iPhone sales in North America “remain resilient” and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is only selling slightly better than its predecessor.

The analyst firm Detwiler Fenton expects Apple will sell a cool thirty million iPhones during the June quarter amid expectation the nine-month-old handset would lose market share to its South Korean rival…(...)

Google updates iOS Search app, rolls out nutritional information in search results

Posted: 31 May 2013 10:45 AM PDT

Google nutritional information (watermelon nutrition facts)

I really, really wish Apple doubled down on Siri. When the intelligent personal assistant debuted as an iPhone 4S-exclusive back in October 2011, Siri was likened to a seismic shift that would vastly improve our interactions with the devices in our lives. And it did.

But merely nineteen months later, Google has leapfrogged Siri with Google Now, which combines the power of Google search with the company’s Knowledge Graph and top-notch voice recognition to deliver relevant info before you even asked for it.

But Google isn’t standing still. Today the firm has updated its native iOS Search app with “location improvements and bug fixes.” And just yesterday, it announced that nutritional information will start cropping up in search results across platforms, including iOS and Android applications that incorporate Google Now…(...)

Apple rumored to launch ad exchange service

Posted: 31 May 2013 09:43 AM PDT

iAd Gallery

Remember iAd, Apple’s mobile advertising service that launched with great fanfare in April 2010? After more than three years, iAd doesn’t seem to be gaining traction due to high ad rates coupled with Apple’s strict requirements and its understaffed and inexperienced ad staff.

Realizing its pitfalls, the iPhone maker is reportedly working on an ad exchange service of sorts, one aimed at helping advertisers target users who browse web sites and use apps on an Apple device, be it an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac…(...)

Apple retains mobile ad lead, but Samsung getting more clicks

Posted: 31 May 2013 09:07 AM PDT

apple-ctr

A mixed-message on the state of mobile advertising is out today. In an announcement expected to hearten both the iOS and Android camps, a UK ad firm reports Apple retains its lead in mobile ad share, while mobile ads rendered on devices by rival Samsung are increasingly being clicked.

Combined, Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch account for more than a third of all ad requests handled by the UK-based Adfonic. However, Samsung – with just twelve percent of the mobile ad share – finds the first quarter 2013 click-through-rate on ads served by its Android devices increasingly stronger than Apple…(...)

AltKeyboard: a better way to input alternate keys

Posted: 31 May 2013 08:39 AM PDT

AltKeyboard Featured

Do you find it inconvenient to have to tap the little '123' button on your iPhone’s keyboard to bring up the numerical keys? Wouldn’t it be better if you could employ a simple swipe gesture to input alternate keys?

That’s the exact thinking behind the just released AltKeyboard. It’s a collaboration between Sentry — known for Auxo — and Alan Yip — known for Tap to Widgets. In usage, AltKeyboard is a very simple tweak, but its development and design were likely significant undertakings. I say that because AltKeyboard is extremely well thought out and well designed. It provides a feature that many will find useful in their day-to-day routine.

Like we always do for tweaks of this nature, we’ve gone hands-on to provide you with a full in-depth video walkthrough. Will AltKeyboard be of benefit to your typing habits? Check inside for the full analysis…(...)

New pricing tactics is working: iPhone sales in India surge 400 percent

Posted: 31 May 2013 07:08 AM PDT

Samsung Apple India (The Next Web 001)

India has become Apple’s test bed for emerging markets, with the company rolling out a series of discounts and payment plans in order to entice purchases and improve its market standing in the 1.24 billion people market.

These efforts are paying off as iPhone sales have risen 400 percent over the past four months.

That’s a dramatic increase over prior iPhone numbers in India, where sales only reached a meager 70,000 to 80,000 handsets a month. The key to such a notable jump: Apple has “figured out” the Indian market, which until now has viewed the iPhone as out of the reach of most of that nation’s consumers…(...)

Apple criticizes TransMedia CEO for saying users are platform-agnostic

Posted: 31 May 2013 06:34 AM PDT

tim cook d11 2

We all know the great lengths Apple will go to nurture and preserve its developer ecosystem and user experience on its platform.

One developer, however, has tested Apple’s patience by issuing an iPhone app press release that suggests users don’t really care which mobile platform they happen to be using.

That drew an interesting response from a representative from Apple Worldwide Developer Relations, who cautioned the comment is at odds not just with Apple’s primary marketing messaging, “but the entire reason Apple exists”…(...)

iPad has grown three times faster than iPhone

Posted: 31 May 2013 05:43 AM PDT

iPad (two-up, iPad, iPad mini, hand)

It’s easy to get caught in the trap of assuming the iPhone is Apple’s fastest-growing product. Although the iPhone sold more units than the iPad – after all, it’s been available since 2007 whereas the iPad debuted three years later – the Apple tablet is growing three times faster than the iPhone.

This is just one of the many interesting factoids from Internet Trends, an annual report on the state of the Internet, mobile and social by Mary Meeker, one of the world’s top Internet analysts. Read on for more tidbits…(...)

Mextures: easily apply textures, light leaks and more effects to your images

Posted: 31 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Mextures 1There are a lot of photo editing applications in the App Store these days. It is hard to find one that is actually unique. It seems like everything that can be done for iOS photo editing, has been done. So, when an innovative app comes along, it is a real treat.

Mextures is the most original photo-editing app for the iPhone that I've seen in the App Store in years. It is more than just a filtering mechanism for your images. It lets you layer, blend, and add texture to your pictures, making them in to pro-quality works of art…(...)

The Scosche Railkase adds aluminum to the bumper case genre

Posted: 31 May 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Scosche RAILkase p5

Bumper style cases are typically made with a silicone or TPU material. These rigid, yet jelly like materials are suitable for minor bumps and bruises but may not be so helpful for the rugged user. The RAILkase p5 by Scosche is a new case that combines bumper functionality with the protective framing of aluminum, and it just brought home a CES 2013 Design and Engineering award.

It is difficult to find metal bumper cases simply because of the nature of the bumper. A bumper case runs the rim of an iPhone, only providing protection on the sides and corners of your device. Thanks to the creative team at Scosche, the RAILkase utilizes a hinge and locking system to provide a nonbendable bumper option…(...)

Change the way you ‘slide to unlock’ with FXOSLock

Posted: 31 May 2013 02:36 AM PDT

fxoslock

Are you getting tired of the old ‘slide to unlock’ bar on your iPhone’s Lock screen? Tough. It’s been like that since Apple unveiled the original handset back in 2007, and I doubt it’s going to be changing it anytime soon.

But the good news is, if your iPhone is jailbroken, Cydia has hundreds of slider replacements to choose from. In fact, a new one just recently hit the store called FXOSLock that completely changes the way the slider looks…(...)

Apple Web OS: a theme that mimics Apple’s online store

Posted: 31 May 2013 01:30 AM PDT

apple web os 1

If pressed, I would say that I consider myself an Apple fan. I love my iPhone, and my iPad, and I’m typing right now on a MacBook Pro. But even I cringed a bit when I first laid eyes on this new DreamBoard theme called Apple Web OS.

As the title states, Apple Web OS essentially gives your iPhone a complete ‘Apple web store’ makeover. Instead of icons it has product photos, and instead of pages it has tabs. It’s actually very authentic, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing…(...)

Another iPad 5 front panel leaks (update: debunked)

Posted: 31 May 2013 12:06 AM PDT

iPad 5 (front panel, Apple.pro 001)

A new image has popped up on a reliable Chinese web site, showing what appears to be a front panel for Apple’s upcoming fifth-generation iPad. Matching up previous leaks, the part features skinnier side bezels that Apple first tried on the iPad mini. The part has holes for the FaceTime front camera and the Home button in the same position as the iPad mini's bezel, along with the touchscreen connector.

Update: as pointed out by the French blog NowhereElse.fr, the image depicts an iPad mini digitizer. Move along folks, nothing to see here…(...)

Swipe to call, text or email in the Contacts app with QuickGestures

Posted: 30 May 2013 11:14 PM PDT

quickgestures

When a fan war breaks out over what the ‘best mobile platform’ is, I usually try to stay out of it. I like iOS better than Android, and believe it to be the superior of the two. But I know that’s just my personal opinion, and not a fact.

Truth be told, I actually like quite a few things about Android. The way it handles contacts, for instance, is great. You can text, email or call someone with a quick swipe or tap. It’s too bad I can’t do that in iOS. Or can I?(...)
