Is it true that Google keeps everything, forever? When I delete a message I expect to see it move to the trash. When I empty the trash I want to see it GONE.

I don't use Gmail myself, but I have read of people who solved this issue by deleting the messages in Gmail itself, on the web.

First of all, get rid of the mail in Mail. Shut Mail down. Go to Gmail via the web interface and delete the mail there. That will get rid of the desired email once and for all.

Mail, on my iMac has set up all my normal contacts including those that I have filed under the names of friends, family, or other contacts, however if I scroll down the bar at the left of the page I see what appears to be a complete set of duplicates under the heading "gmail".

Some of the stored messages are as much as 7 years old but I can't delete them! If I highlight a message and click delete it obediently disappears, if I use "select all" and then "delete" all of them vanish. However - the next time I open mail I can find the same messages exactly as they were before I tried to get rid of them.

The Airport Extreme is a router, but it doesn't connect to the coaxial cable from Time Warner. It is not a cable modem.

Here are some links to reviews of cable modems:
<http://cable-modem-review.toptenreviews.com>
<http://cablemodemreviews.org>

Or you can google "cable modem reviews" and find lots more info. Or someone here will probably have a good suggestion.

Oh, right. I guess I meant I need a modem, not a router. So if anyone on Time Warner can suggest an "approved" modem, I'd like to hear from you!

Thanks.

Perhaps you cannot escape the rental option, but maybe buy it out and be
done with the rental charges that could keep going up. Purchasing,
however, puts any future replacement cost in your lap, whereas renting
it will always keep you both current and under warranty with a
functioning machine.

Here in Ontario Canada, I'm with Bell, and they have a modem/router
specifically built /crippled for them, and I do have to rent it as well;
however, since signing up with them decades ago, i have replaced their
modem/router 3x now and they couriered replacements out overnight. Two
were due to upgrades and 1 "burned out"/ ceased to function at all.

You could perhaps find a hacked one on Craiglist or Kijiji but you are
on your own with setting it up and configuration, and you don't know how
long it will last...

$48 per year is not that bad, and if you can get a new one every two
years or so under warranty, you are either ahead of the game or at least
breaking even, with no worries, IMHO.

I always used theirs and never bought a modem. This way it gets updated properly as they update frequently.

A purchased modem won't.

I received the same notice from TWC. There are only two cable modems
"approved" for use with Time Warner's turbo Internet service. While I don't
use it yet, I may want to upgrade in the future and have the ability to do
so now.
The two are both Motorola models. One is also a wireless router. The
SBG6580. The other is strictly wired, model SB6141.
Since they are only about $14 apart in price, I opted for the wireless
model, which I just ordered from Amazon.com.
These two models are also backward-compatible with the standard and basic
Internet services.
I will post my feelings about the purchase, once I receive the modem and
have a chance to try it out.

True for me, too. I just use their modem, and if there's any slowdown or problem, they update the modem, no charge. It's simple. I don't know if it's the latest, greatest, most fabulous modem, but it's replaced within a day of my request at no charge, and I'm happy with that.

I've seen top many T-W customers basically have to 'eat' the cost of their purchased modems lest be left behind by these updates. Don't recall being charged for a stand alone modem either. Always used my own router or switch.

Vickie, I must have missed the original post here. Many internet access points combine the "modem" (not really a modulator/demodulator from digital to analog and back again which the original telephone service devices were) with a router in the same box. If your Time Warner "cable modem" doesn't include a router in the same box, you'll likely be happier having a Airport Express or Airport Extreme modem distributing internet access from Time Warner's device. However, you should make sure that the Time Warner device you end up really is NOT a router, because if you have two devices doing NAT (network address translation) you may end up with strange problems reaching the internet from time to time (so called "double NAT". I've never had Time Warner as my access provider, but I guess there's also the possibility that they might want to charge you for a "combo box" router and terminal adapter rental fee or permit you to buy such a device from them or another retailer. Apple doesn't manufacture or sell combination modem/router devices.

I hope that's clear :-)

Hello Everyone,

My new 512GB SSD from Crucial will be arriving tomorrow morning. Once physically installed, how am I going to power up my MBPro when there is no OS on the new drive? Is there a key combination that will somehow tell the Laptop to use my 32GB Kingston USB drive on which I have a copy of "Install OSX Mountain Lion.app", or my CarbonCloneCopy on one of my Western Digital Desktop Drives, although I want a clean install of OSX 10.8.2?

I also have two WD 2TB backup drives, one of which contains all my Time Machine backups, and the other contains various files and folders, including my CarbonCloneCopy Backup.

I just cannot get my head wrapped around how my MBPro is going to start after I hit the power button, when the main SSD is completely empty.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hold down the Option (Alt) key on your keyboard while booting up. That will give you a screen offering every bootable drive that is available.
You will probably see only the USB drive listed. If more drives do show up, use the arrow keys to select the USB drive, then click the Return (Enter) key to proceed with the booting process.

Thanks Paul, I made a Recovery Disk out of my USB Drive, so I should be good to go. One thing though, and that is after I successfully made the Recovery Disk, the disk itself no longer shows under "Devices" in Finder. I opened Disk Utility, and it shows there, and shows that it is mounted, but still not showing up in Finder.

Do you know how to fix that issue. Last time I ran into this problem, all I had to do was open Disk Utility and choose to "Mount" the disk, and it then showed in Finder. In this case, DU is already showing the disk as mounted, but still not showing up in Finder.

Any ideas?

Most browsers are free, and if you install and use several of them they don't conflict with each other. So why not install a few and decide which one *you* like best?

Did you know that there are literally about 200 browsers for the Mac to choose from?!:
http://www.knutson.de/mac/www/browsers.html
(This site lists, and includes a mini-review of, each browser.)

I mostly use Safari, which is a great browser as long as you make sure to keep the Adobe Flash plug-in meticulously updated.

However, I also really like Opera. It's wildly fast, it has some very nice security features, you can change "skins", and it has a boatload of features!
