Yes Les -- I get quite different results, which suggests suggests something is fundamentally adrift in your machine. Specifically, I get the following results:
$ ig -gn
alanfry
$ ls -ladeO /Applications/Plustek/OpticalB ook3800/PlustekO pticalBook3800. app
drwxr-xr-x 3 alanfry admin - 102 12 Jan 18:48 /Applications/Plustek/OpticalB ook3800/PlustekO pticalBook3800. app
Firstly, I think you should not be getting 'staff' back from a -g (group) enquiry.
Secondly, you have '501 wheel' where you should be getting 'lesstreater-a admin'. And what the last line (beginning o:) is all about I have no idea at all.
The number '501' should translate to your user-name. For example for me:
$ id 501
uid=501(alanfry) gid=501(alanfry) groups=501(alanfry),.....
and I think you should get the same thing with 'lesstreater-a' in the brackets.
The only suggestion I can think of is to run the complete set of maintenance routines set out in Randy B. Singer's pages at <http://www.macattorney.com/ts. > and then try reinstalling Plustek again.html

Is your library in Shared, or do you have sharing enabled in iPhoto itself?

Technically, yes (Office 2008 for Mac is Lion-compatible).
Legally, it depends on your License. I think there are "family" licenses, but others may know more than I. If you have a single user license and you're on the same LAN, the registration codes may prevent more than one copy of any Office application from running at the same time.

Howdy.
You can install Office 2008 on the MBP 2011 but possibly not legally.
The Microsoft EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) probably allows for a
copy of a purchased program to be installed and used on one main
computer and also on a 2nd and/or laptop computer, in the same
household, as long as the program is only run on one computer at a time
and the two computers are used by the same person.
I don't know if these terms have changed recently. Perhaps another
group member is more up-to-date on the MS EULA.

Howdy.
I've now posted many times on the dangers of Seagate FreeAgents and
Western Digital MyBooks. Just terrible stuff. Randy S and others have
also cautioned against these products.
I know that there are folks here with good stores about these brands
but my personal experience with both, the personal experience of my
neighbors, and that of people in this and other groups, online
articles, is a very big weight of evidence that shows these brands have
some ver serious reliability problems.

Howdy.
I've not heard any bad reports about the New Technology VoyagerQ. It
seems like a quality drive dock.
I've been using two Thermaltake BlacX USB/eSATA drive docks and an
eSATA card in my MacPro. The BlacX drive docks have worked flaslessly.
I should note that a group member here, from a bit further west in
Virginia than my house, had a defective BlacX. While defective stuff
is always inconvenient it may not be an indication of low reliability,
at least in this case.

Harddrives like everything else in technology have good runs and bad runs.
Based on my experiences I prefer and recommend Seagate FreeAgent drives - I
have at least 35 of them in use as server backup, archive, etc - in fact I
have 4 on my desk at the moment (2 brown w/ orange light, 1 silver, and 1
black) and have never had a problem. Western Digital, Samsung, and Hitachi
have all burned me on more than one occasions and even thought Lacie does't
actually make drives I don't trust their units either. That said it's all a
gamble you never know who is going to make the next good or bad run of
drives.
If the data is important then don't spend to much energy on the brand of
the drive - use something like raid in house then back it up offsite -
their are lots of cost effectives solutions for both these days.

External hard drives include the enclosure, bridge and power supply.
Internal hard drives are simply the internal mechanism.
Seagate, WD, and Hitachi external hard drives are all junk.
However, Hitachi still makes decent (though no longer great) internal
hard drives, as does Seagate. WD internal hard drives tend to be
junk, but there are a couple of good models that they make.
The biggest problem is that there are now only two 3.5-inch hard
drive manufacturers: Seagate and WD. They have purchased every other
maker. Lack of competition causes there to be no need to produce
quality.
Western Digital purchased Hitachi which had previously purchased
IBM's hard drive division
<http://www.zdnet.com/blog/ storage/wd- buys-hitachi- gst-the-good- and-

Seagate purchased Samsung's hard drive division

Toshiba purchased Fujitsu's hard drive division

Basically there are now only three players in the rotating disk hard
drive field. Toshiba concentrates on 2.5-inch drives for mobile
computers.

CES Annual Show in Las Vegas & "Ghost of Apple"

Here's a fun article on the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in
Las Vegas.

Apple's ghost hangs over CES
By Stacy Cowley @CNNMoneyTech, January 13, 2012: 12:32 PM ET
While Apple isn't official present at CES there is, according to the
article, an 80,000 square foot (7,432 m squared) special space called
the "iLounge" for iOS oriented products.
Micro$loth, trailing behind as ever, has announced that this is the
last year for them to have an official presence even though Uncle
Fester gave yet another keynote address demonstrating his disconnect
with reality.
As one reviewer who heard that keynote wrote, (sorry, can't remember
who now), "People listened politely as Ballmer talked about how Windows
Mobile 7 Phone (or whatever it's called this quarter) will take over
the entire world of mobile computing and then they wandered out of the
hall Twitting, texting, and emailing on their iPhone and Android
devices."
Be sure to read about the startup company that makes it possible to use
your iPhone as a BBQ meat thermometer. OK.
Alright, I tried to look it up. Is it Windows Phone 7 this year?

Howdy.
I think Nokia will survive in some form or another. But they got
caught so far behind after release of the iPhone and haven't made much
progress in catching up in five years.
Nokia teaming with Microsoft for a mobile OS smacks of desperation.
But it is important to remember that Nokia is still the largest maker
of all types of cell phones but the smartphone market has eluded them.
IMO, the iOS / iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad data that really overwhelms
all others is not the absolute number of these devices in the world but
the percent of online sales of products, gifts, downloads, movie
downloads, book downloads, data, holiday shopping that is done on the
iOS devices.
This online use/percent by iOS is what just blasts the Nokias out of
contention and their stock price reflects it. Same with Blackberry.
At this moment (US dollars), share prices are:
Apple (AAPL on NASDAQ) $419.64
Nokia (NOK) $5.22
Research In Motion (RIMM) $16.09
Microsoft (MSFT) $28.07

NAS for network backups - free software
Posted by: "Tim O'Donoghue" tjod@drizzle.net timodonoghue
Fri Jan 13, 2012 11:44 am (PST)
Hi all;
I'm posting this just for general reference. Although it is not specifically Mac-related, it can be used with the AFP protocol, among others like NFS and CIFS.
I was looking for a way to use an old Windows box that has been replaced by Bootcamp partitions on my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini, and found this software:
http://www.freenas.org/
It's a free Network Area Storage (NAS) solution described as
"FreeNAS is an Open Source Storage Platform based on FreeBSD and supports sharing across Windows, Apple, and UNIX-like systems. FreeNAS 8 includes ZFS, which supports high storage capacities and integrates file systems and volume management into a single piece of software."
I'm currently using it as a NAS for several Mac and Windows machines, and as storage for videos. It may not be for everyone and does require some networking knowledge, but it's reasonably well documented. Best of all it's free.
All you need is an old PC capable of booting to USB with one or more drives (RAID is supported), a USB stick (I'm using a 2 GB Sandisk "Cruzer" drive) and a CD/DVD to boot the installer disc. It does not require a very powerful machine, so even a P2 or P3 machine will suffice.

I have a core group of fonts that I like to use, however just about all suck when it comes to Hungarian, which goes German diacritics a few better.
Most fonts can handle the standard diacriticked vowels: <ááá>, <ééé>, <ÃÃÃ>, <óóó>, <úúú>. Most can also handle short umlauts: <ööö>, <üüü>. My problem is with long umlauts: <Å'Å'Å'>, <űűű>, which do not exist in German, which only has 30 letters compared to 40 Hungarian.
The problem that I have experienced is that most fonts become distorted when trying to effect the long umlauts (<Å'> and <ű>). Thatâs a visual nono.
I have only found Trebuchet MS to be able to handle all the Hungarian letters properly, however Iâve only sampled a dozen or so fonts. Can anybody out there who is font-savvy recommend other fonts that can also work alongside Trebuchet? Thanx.
Hope these fonts show on the list. Oneal

They all appear correctly viewed using UTF-8 and Verdana. It's the
character encoding that is the problem - so many US users stick with
USASCII.

Drip-Casting

More stuff from CES.
There have been several press mentions of a new technology to deliver video to mobile / cell devices. Apparently announced at CES.
Drip-Casting would send videos in partial chunks over time but not run up a big bandwidth usage or fees.

Changing an Airport Express name
Posted by: "Ken" avlisk@cox.net avliska

Hi. I now have 2 Airport Expresses, and the main wireless router, an Airport Extreme. My question is about the 2 Expresses. In iTunes, they both turn up as Airport Express, having the very same name. Is there a way to re-name one of them. The problem is more of an aggravation, in that they feed audio to different parts of the house, and it's a trial-and-error thing when choosing one over the other. If they even stayed in the same order in the iTunes' list, I could remember which one went where, but they flip-flop their order too.
Thanks

Contactizer Pro was one of the better ones, but unfortunately the
company seems to have gone out of business â" at least, they haven't
responded to support queries by e-mail or on their own forum for
months, and there was a rather cryptic tweet on Twitter back in
December about how the lead developer (at least I think that was his
role) had "betrayed" the company. Very disappointing.

There's really no such thing as translating. It's all a scam. We
basically just make stuff up and try to make it sound plausible.

Real Player Folder

It seems "Real Player Downloader" pops up from time to time while I am about to view e-mail, as if it has a mind of its own.
I opened the "Real Player" Folder and found about 4,500 items, some of which are the photos I have in iPhoto or the music I store in iTunes.
But the majority of items/icons, are things I do not recognize and as such, I wonder if I should be deleting some or if in the entirety they are consuming too many GB`s, although it does not seem to be the case.
At the same time many of these may be valuable to the computer`s on going functions.
Examples are as follows:
"Portable Net," "Graphics," Quick Draw," "Word 2003 Format and Template,"
"HTML Document," "Tiff Image," "Apple Loop" and more.
Since I am not the original owner, could the above examples be things that were never purged before I took possession?
Would the group kindly advise me, if my examples are recognizable, if they are essential or if they have no value and if so, how do I delete them? I presume I can drag a few to trash every day for the rest of my life. ;o)
I have an older PowerBookG4 running 10.5.8 and for my limited use I am elated with this MAC.
Thanks for your continued support.....
Rick
