iPhone 4S Address Book Problem
Posted by: "K.Cruce, Sr." kcruce@bellsouth.net kcruce

I have found that many of my addresses have had their phone numbers repeated up to six times in their listing, I did not do this myself. Anyone else had this problem? What was your solution? Other than going down the mail lised and deleting the extra numbers.
Thanks, KeithC

When I had Apple store transfer my old phone contacts to my new iPhone 4s. Every contact in both email accounts transferred as dups and some in triplicate depending how I had them listed in old email acts. Some by first names, later entered by surname. I had to go through each one individually to make sure all data pertaining to that person was intact before I deleted anyone.

I've been very happy with my AT&T service for many many years. I had Verizon long ago, but it was so long ago that it wouldn't be a fair comparison.
I used to have dead spots with AT&T along the ICW in North Carolina but those got filled in a couple of years ago. Now it just works in all the places I go across the US East Coast and South, the Caribbean basin, Bermuda, and Europe.
This past weekend we took nieces and nephews into NYC to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and I began to understand the frustration so many have with AT&T. The phone worked fine as a phone, but data -- even with four bars and 3G -- was awful. There were time-outs, LONG delays, and other strange things. I begin to understand the demand for Verizon service, at least in New York City. Janet's Verizon iPhone worked great and mine became a non-smartphone.

Dave,
could it be that there were more people NYC for shopping and the tree than normal. We know the network is stretched thin in NYC normally, and so on a big shopping weekend it will have more usage/problems.
Verizon apparently did not take that much business away from AT&T (some I would suppose be cause of ETFs), and so there would be fewer users on the Vz network. Although, I though I had heard it was stressed a bit with the new load in areas.
BTW, what is the "ICW in North Carolina" is that anything like the ECR in CA? Or is it bigger and faster like the 101?

I haven't had a terrible time with my cell phone YET. But i'm sure one of these days I'll get hit with these spam calls; However this is why I still have a landline which is hit at least 10 to 15 time a day with these calls to the point where I now take my phone off the hook from morning to night. The do not call registry is useless. These callers (I assume telemarketers, but i don't understand it) have numbers that are bogus to specifically skirt the do not call registry. I cannot block them because even though I do block 40 of them to no use because the numbers change almost everytime. They are not real numbers I found out when I was searching this on the internet. No one says anything if I pick up (so why do they call me?) It is harassment. If I don't pick up I have to listen to the phone ringing all day.. I haven't found a solution to this. I get some texts on my cell phone that offer the option of blocking or opting out. Sooo far that has not been a problem. I don't give out my cell phone, but the few time I probably did is what caused me to get these calls. I suppose when I go shopping or need to put in a phone no. I could lie about it and also put in a bogus no. but that is really not who I am. If my no. is private, it is still going to get out there somehow.
So the moral is: this is a dilemma that has no current method to block some of these calls and it needs to be fixed if possible.

If you leave your phone off the hook all day, then get rid of it. It is not doing you any good and you are just tying up resources others could use. Or mute the ringer.
Either way no one, not spammers, not family, not friend and not emergency services can reach you. And if you need emergency services and the extension is off the hook, you can't call out. Also remember that 911 can not locate you when you use a cell phone.
If your landline phone does not have caller ID then get a gadget that will.
If you do not have both the landline and the cell phone registered with the Federal Do Not call list, do it now! They have changed it so it does not expire. And file a complaint on each spam call. Don't worry, the spammers will get around to calling and texting your cell phone. So set it up now.
But if you don't file the complaints, they will never be stopped. File them at
https://www.donotcall. gov/
and no the Registry is will not call you. After you register, the only communications will be by USPS mail. A similar URL only .com is not the Feds.
The reason that no one is there when you answer is that it is a machine that is calling and looking to find a number where it is answered. If an operator/spammer is not available, then they will call back shortly.
What I used to so was to play along, get some info from them and then explain I was interested, but suddenly had to leave and wanted a number where I could call them back. Act interested, ask for the persons name. Once you have it tell them you are on the no call list and tell them not to call back. This helps the Feds to act on the complaint.
I much preferred it when Oregon state ran it's own program, and the Federal one would have allowed it, but our stupid legislatures are idiots and stopped the Oregon program. The Federal program is too slow. There is one local business that kept calling me and because of a series of my complaints was fined $35,000.00. I just wished they paid a bounty. They are still in business, but for some reason they no longer do phone solicitation.

I have a similar problem. A close relative owes everyone in the world and the collection agencies harass the parents, brothers, sisters etc trying to find them. I purchased a call blocking home phone but it only has a 30 number block memory and that is not nearly large enough. Also it can't block the number until it can look it up by caller id and that makes it ring once. Better but not enough. There are several companies that make blocking boxes such as this one http://www.Digitone.com/ but I can't vouch for how they work. Try Google. Good luck and if you find a solution that works please post it.

Re: A method to block spam calls

Ellen, You can fix this. Several have made suggestions for your Landline
spam calls. They were good suggestions. This is what we have done.
-First off Re-register All your Landline and mobile phones with the Do
Not Call. This allows you to say when anyone calls you, after the long
wait --- "Do not ever call this number again. This number is registered
on the Do Not Call list and any further calls are a violation of Federal
Law."
Now you may want to first find out who they are and if it is your bank
or such. You get the name and number, etc. and tell them to remove you
from their lists. They fuss a little, "you will not hear of our special
offers..." Just they them. "Remove this number". Making a little
notebook by the phone will show you who is calling and you may be able
to make a few quick calls to get off all your lists. Your bank/credit
card will still call you if something is really wrong, but it will stop
the junk calls.
- Maybe Change your landline number... may cost you a few dollars.
Actually think the above and below may work best.
- Consider getting rid of your landline and getting a DSL phone. Like
the Magicjack Plus, OOMA, Vonage or others. MagicJack and OOMA after the
initial purchase ($70-200) can be as low as $3-4 a month with free long
distance.
- Get a Google email account and a Google Voice account to go with it.
You can set it up to ring both your mobile and your landline/DSL phone
or one or the other. Give out to everyone your Google Voice number.
Never give out your real mobile or home number. This is not hard, you
just tell your friends and family you have a new phone number. Tell your
Dr, dentist, bank, DirectTV... doesn't take long for all the numbers to
get changed. We've used Google Voice for several years now and it works
great. Have changed mobile phones, Landline to magicjack to OOMA and no
one has had to change their listing for us. Giving folks the new number
was no different than when we moved, but now everything is set.
I'd even get an extra Google email and Google voice for those times when
you have to give a phone number but don't want to be bothered with junk
calls. They can leave a msg on the second GV number and you get an email
saying you have a msg. It won't be life or death. Also when people ask
us for a phone number when shopping we just say "we don't give it out."
Unless you are buying a house, car or they are delivering something they
don't need your number and are just getting it to sell or make calls to
sell you more stuff. Don't let them.
Don't try to block the calls. Stop the calls.
In 4-6 weeks all the calls will stop.

I have a 4S and use a blue parrot blue tooth headset. Recently people that I call say that I sound like I am under water. I have deleted and reset the blue tooth connection. If I use the iPhone without the BT, all is good.
I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if the blue tooth might have been the problem. I hate to spend $100 without knowing if the will fix it.
Thanks, Ron

In contacts, if you have a photo in their contact info it should show up when they call but there's a bug. Here's what I found http://iphone.tokenforums. com/question/ 2816/iphone- 4s-is-no- longer-displayin g-contact- photos-on- incoming- calls
