X-Files dumpster diving

I have a game called X-Files on several CDs. It is no longer playable and hasn't been for several operating systems. Before I trash it, I would like to see if there are any sounds, images, etc. to keep. The files come w extensions: .xmv, .nmv, .hot, .dmv, .pff.

Anyone know of anyway to open these files to exam? Thanks. jr

You might try File Juicer.

Thanks Denver for your detailed response. That is the route I took with the upgrade to snow leopard but with Lion it will not work. I used the network utility to ping the printer's IP address of 10.0.1.9 but I get a "host is down" response.

I verified the IP address directly from the Print Configuration print out of the printer so does this mean the technology is no longer compatible?

Thanks, Dan,
I do have the latest Firefox.I will have to look into customizing the tool
bar. I am happy with Lion, and I LOVE my Firefox, and have used it for
years, since just about the beginning, so I have no intention of trying
another browser. Being that it is open source, there might be a fix for it
soon..or so I would hope. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one with
this problem.

Terminal Password

Posted by: "Robert" cookrd1@discoveryowners.com   cookrd1

I must be doing something wrong, but I have used terminal many times but this is my first time using Terminal in Lion.

I am trying to modify my Hosts file. But, when I type in sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit/etc/hosts and hit return, it asks for my Password - which I type in - and it tells me that Sorry that is not correct.

This is the same password that I use in Lion when installing new software and it is also the same password that worked in Terminal when I was using SL and Leopard.

Went to System Preferences, Users and Groups, and changed my Password. No luck, still get the invalid password message in Terminal.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Bob

Well I usually use vim to edit files in the terminal and that works fine. Using your command TextEdit opens and immediately exits without even asking for a password. Tried using exec which asked for my password but then said "command not found". Tried with BBedit which opened to a blank file.

Try just using vim.

Your command looks all wrong. It looks like you're using one long
parameter. Shouldn't it be
sudo nano /etc/hosts
or
sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
(nano is probably the easiest editor.)

Yes, the command is wrong and results in "command not found" error. You can however open up the hosts file with TextEdit (using Terminal) with:

open -a /Applications/TextEdit.app /private/etc/hosts

On my machine (10.6.8) you don't need 'sudo'. Also on my machine /private is visible so one can open up /hosts (or anything else) in the ordinary way with TextEdit or BBEdit, without using the Terminal.

A word of warning -- be careful what you do in /hosts -- it is used when booting up!

Thanks for letting us know.

Just out of interest I noticed in the meantime there was only one tiny thing wrong with your original line -- a missing space. If you run

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts

it works fine (with or without the 'sudo'). (Note the space after TextEdit). However one has to quit Terminal with ctrl-C for some reason. It is not completely safe because it depends upon there being a symlink in /private pointing to /etc. It is usually there, but might not be always.

Step-by-step.

Decide where recovered files will go. Home > Pictures seems the obvious
place.

Connect your memory card reader.

Click or double-click on Applications > TestDisk > PhotoRec. A Terminal
window opens and you are asked to select the media. In my case I get
Disk /dev/disk1 - (size)
Disk /dev/rdisk1 - (size)
The first is selected by default.

Forget the mouse/trackpad while you're using Terminal. Use the arrow keys
to change selections and the <enter> key to action a choice.

Press <enter>. A list of partition table types appears.

Select Intel/PC using the arrow keys and press <enter>. A description of
the drive and partition appears. It is likely to be FAT16 or FAT32. At the
bottom are options Search/Options/File Opt/Quit. The first is selected by
default.

Press <enter> to start file recovery. A choice of file systems appears.

Ensure Other is selected and press <enter>. A choice of Free or Whole
appears. If the drive is not corrupted Free is OK, otherwise select Whole.

Press <enter>. A list of destination folders appears.
Select Pictures and press C.

Recovery starts, showing you the elapsed and estimated times. As files are
recovered, the total for each kind is updated. Note that all types are
recovered, not just image files. Allow this to complete. A summary appears,
giving you the total files recovered and their location.

Press <enter> to Quit, then command-q to quit Terminal.

Look at the recovered files!

If you don't get what you expected, repeat the above but using rdisk1
instead of rdisk.

I finally got it, I think, Otto.

Normally, when I email outside of this MUG, I do not use the Reply mode, however I did here, as with this response.

Due to some ongoing Apple Mail wonkiness, 'normal' things are not happening. For instance, using Mail's Reply mode should place a previous-message indicator on the left. That used to look --and still does with certain email apps- like this: > > >.

Does anyone know the name of the symbol? The upward pointing version is called a 'caret', which is Latin for 'lacking'. What's the rightward-pointing symbol called?

I used Mail's Format > Quote Level [command-' keystroke] to insert a pseudoline: It looks real, however it did not come with the Reply mode, as it normally did/should do.

To further elucidate, at some point ALL posts via this group ONLY came with >>> symbols. Many still do. When I use Reply mode on these posts, new symbols are NOT added. BTW, those posts came Georgia 13-point fonts.

I guess that, for some reason, Yahoo changed things around.

Other posts nowadays come looking quite different. The fonts reflect my choosing: Chalkboard 17-point. As before, there is no quote-level indication using Reply mode.

Currently such insertion has to be manual. Thanx. Oneal

Too bad about WeatherDock's demise. I think Weather Channel is being short-sighted on this one. People can still link to Weather Channel via the dedicated button on WeatherDock.

I doubt that Alwin Troost, WD's creator (with whom I corresponded (via another nomen) a few years ago about a certain issue) was getting rich off this app.

WC can more than make up its $$$ 'shortfall' via linx from WD. As it is now, it gets zero in the way of coin from Troost, who says (on his website) that the app might carnate in another form.

Must say that I liked what WeatherDock did. Oneal

I want it to go to my default iCal calendar

(answering my own question - with the help of a genius)

Turns out that once one selects a calendar to direct invitations to, that preference for that type of invitation outlives the operating system and environment in which that preference was set up. AND, there are a whole bunch of different kinds of invitations that Entourage and iCal "understand."

The Genius used Spotlight to find some old invitations, selected one, did a "Get Info" on it in the Finder, and changed Finder Preferences for it so that it, and all others like it, are "opened" in iCal rather than Entourage. And, because there are many types of invitations, he had to ferret through several old instances of these lying around on my computer and change EACH variety so that they're now all (I hope) handled by iCal instead of Entourage.

> I don't see why this would be the case, but I'm wondering if my entries in System Preferences: Mail, Contacts and Calendars could be the culprit. My default IMAP mail account with my ISP isn't even LISTED there, but the POP mail account with my ISP still is

The Genius assured me this was not the case, but he told me the reason there's now a "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" preference pain in Lion that lists mail accounts is to handle outgoing traffic (so that, for example), if I click the "email" link for a photo in iPhoto, the mac knows what email servers to use to send it.

Often, I see messages on this forum in which the quote delimiter (for which Mail.app uses a vertical line, but which is displayed in ASCII mail as ">" doesn't mark text beyond the first line of quoted material). I've just surmised that this happens when the quote doesn't include a hard linefeed or linefeed/carriage return character. So, just to test, I've quoted portions of two paragraphs of text to reply to my own message. If I'm right, everything quoted will show that it was quoted, as opposed to my last message, where the ">" shows up only in the first line of quoted text.

My guess is this might be limited to Yahoo groups that try to live both in the web and email environments.

Another example of how messy online life is around the edges, and why Steve Jobs's "beginning to end" control could make life more elegant for people, but only for so long as they stay on their home turf. Once they need translators, things are bound to go awry here and there.

But, unfortunately, I was wrong. Looks as though whatever reflows text to ASCII in the Yahoo Groups forum software forgets to put the ">" character at the beginning of lines (or perhaps it's the receiving computer's client that cannot do it. Anyway, it's a mess.

listservs that accept and send only ASCII don't seem to have this problem, no matter how the email clients involve denote quotation.

Many thanks, Alan - that worked. Not under Account though; login items now under Users and Groups. Whew! I should have asked the group a long time ago.

I've tried to trash the app but because it's still open, it won't trash. How can I uninstall it? The scrolling message is driving me bananas! Tried e-mailing them but no reply.

Anyone Using Flight Simulator Games for Mac?

I am interested in purchasing a new flight simulator game for my 17' MacBook Pro. The two I am looking at are ProFlightSimulator and X-Plane 10, and was wondering if anyone on the list has experience with either of the two flight simulators I am looking at.

In addition, can these games be played using the MBPro by itself, or do you need an external flight control stick, etc?

Thanks for your help.

Nick;

I am currently using X-Plane 9 on my Mac Mini. (2011 model, 2.5 ghz i5, 8 gig RAM, 2x500GB SSD/SATA Hybrid drives) with Saitek X-52 Joystick/throttle combination. It runs flawlessly out of the box, and unless I set the frame rate too high I can tweak most of the settings higher to get a better "look & feel" i.e better looking terrain, better sky detail, etc.

X-Plane can be used via keyboard and mouse, but unless you're a real masochist, do yourself a favor and get some sort of joystick/throttle combination. Reasonable ones can e gotten for about $50 USD, really good ones can run $150 to several hundred.

I ordered the version 10, and it arrived ion the mail the other day, but I won't install it until I get back on my feet after knee replacement surgery last week.

When I first received the program, I ran it on a mid-2010 MBP 15", i7x2, 8 gig RAM and 240 gig SSD. It ran really well, but took up too much of the drive space needed for other things, so I installed it on the Mini instead.
