Re: LaserJet 4000 and Lion Problems

Hi Ed
This is what I used to finally log my old Epson printer on with Snow
Leopard. It used to add on like normal, but when trying to print to it,
the printer just hangs and does not respond, or almost instantly goes
into "pause" mode. Taking it out to "resume" does nothing. The print
jobs pretend to load and then it quickly the printer pauses again. I
ended up just deleting the printer, the print jobs and resetting the
print system.
Keeping in mind this process is for Snow Leopard and Denver Dan replied
with a Lion response. Perhaps that "socket" bit is applicable here too.
Worth a try before tossing your printer...
Trial Method A
Another method is to tinker with the printer under the web browser
window access: Open a web browser and type this in the window:
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
This is the backdoor to administer all your printers the CUPS system
which Apple uses. You'll need your Mac user ID and password.
This is where you can also get the old printers to work that don't
readily get added to the printer queues. You can also do test pages here
and set defaults.
===
Trial Method B
Here are the steps....
Turn on your printer and have your paper loaded, and determine the
printer's IP address (without this, you can't add the printer)
I use an app called IP Scanner from 10base-t.com version 2.86 to find
out all connected devices on my network switches.
Open System Preferences
Under Print & Fax
Click the PLUS Sign under the list of printers available
The Add Printer window opens
Under the Advanced icon drop down, I selected:
Type: Jetdirect
Device: Another Device
URL: socket://192.168.2.19 (add your own numbers here)
Name: Epson 3000
Location: Office
Print Using: Epson Stylus Color 3000 - Gutenprint v5.2.3
Then click add.
This allowed me to see ink levels, as well as print out a CUPS test page.
It would seem that the >>> URL: socket://192.168.2.19 <<<<
is the critical information that I did not previously try in the
combinations of setup options.... who knew? This is not well documented
in the least!
Anyway, the word/prefix "socket://"
made all the difference in the printer actually responding.
Now under the print menu, you get all the usual options, and under the
Preview (default) drop down you can then modify all the settings your
printer has to offer under the "Printer Features". Here you select
resolution, color models, colorsync profiles, etc..... and if you are
clever, you can save the settings under custom names, until you find a
combination of settings that works for you. Then get a screen capture of
the setup and print it out for your records in case you have to do all
this again. Also print this email in case you forget how to add this
sort of printer...
====
Thanks Denver for your detailed response. That is the route I took with
the upgrade to snow leopard but with Lion it will not work. I used the
network utility to ping the printer's IP address of 10.0.1.9 but I get a
"host is down" response.
I verified the IP address directly from the Print Configuration print
out of the printer so does this mean the technology is no longer compatible?

Well hopefully now that you've had the replacement, after a little rehab you can get back on your feet and hopefully enjoy life relatively pain free.
> When I first received the program, I ran it on a mid-2010 MBP 15", i7x2, 8 gig RAM and 240 gig SSD. It ran really well, but took up too much of the drive space needed for other things, so I installed it on the Mini instead.
Yes, that is the problem I fear. I only have the 256 GB SSD and was wondering what kind of a hit I will be taking in terms of disk space when I run it. I do have two 2TB Disk Drives, but I will be putting Win 7 on one of those instead of the Parallels/Win 7 combo I now have. Hopefully that will free up enough disk space on my SSD so I can satisfactorily run either ProFlightSimulator or X-Plane 10 without worry.
Did you try a demo of PFS, or have any previous experience with it that made you go with X-Plane?
BTW, I am looking now at ordering a flight control stick.

Hi Nick;
Knee is doing well, thanks.
My X-Plane folder is 27 GB, of which 23 GB is Scenery. I have N. America + Ireland + England installed. I haven't tried PFS, so can't comment on that.
BTW, the X-Plane DVDs will install and run on Mac, Linux, or Windows.

For what it's worth, I like x-plane, It seems to be ok with me using Zoom, so that I can read my gages and displays better. It also performs quite well on my stock 2008 2.46ghz MBP. The only regret I have is there are no taxi instructions, which made terminal velocity's fly (PC) quite realistic.

A right angle bracket or closing angle bracket.

Ahah! You learn something every day. or at least I do.
I always thought of the sideways-pointing angle symbols as "Greater than" and "Less than." A carry-over from my high school math classes.

At the risk of belaboring the point, in this case right angle bracket
means right as in opposite of left, not right as in 90 degrees.

"Greater-than sign", according to Apple's character viewer.
(I copied the character from the line above, opened Character Viewer, pasted the copied sign into the search window, and was shown that character, its name, and its relatives.)

You were correct. This *IS* greater-than, according to Apple.

Not surprisingly, what was displayed on *my* screen when I received my message back was not the character I sent out, in the case of the 2nd mark above....
The "single right-pointing angle quotation mark" can be obtain by typing
<Shift><Option><4>, which is what I am typing here: ›››››

Thanks, John. Works great. I wish that it did not break down .wmv (or movie files) to individual jpgs, but they're neat to look at anyway. jr
