Hi Jurgen, thank for the rich response; it was a very generous response. I will give this a try but I am getting tired of this game with HP; especially since a new brother laser printer only costs $100.00 . I will let you know how it goes.

Lion and C Compiler?

Just tried to compile a c source object and found that there was no longer a 'c' compiler on my system. When did this happen? I had Xcode and did an update via the App store. Maybe I should revert to the Developer stuff from prior to the Xcode update?

The latest ones work fine for me with Lion.
Dumb question. Did you run the Installer you got from the App store. You
have to do this step by hand. Look for something along the liens of
"Install Xcode" in /Applications
If you still have problems, post the exact command you run and the error
you get at the command line.

Chris,
A followup, I finally had a chance to find the installer for Xcode, ran it again, I think, and all is well now. Compiler is in place.

Right. It has been for developers since before the release version of Lion was out. The trouble is that the installer, currently, is not being executed properly upon install from the App store. As Chris recommended, I found the installer and re-executed it. Now the compiler is installed perfectly.
Thought I was going to have to go back to a developer release of Xcode.

Actually, the App store is working exactly as Apple intends. The idea is
when you install it from the app store, it only downloads the installer.
You then have to run it by hand yourself afterwards. Now, you could
argue this is dumb, since no other application in the store works this
way, and I would agree. But this is what Apple wants to happen, so it is
working as intended. Search the web, and you will find plenty of
discussions on this.

When does push occur?
Posted by: "myhandle2001" RGE102840@cs.com myhandle2001

I have set up iCloud on my Mac, iPhone and iPad, and have entered a couple new contacts on my iPhone. So far, nothing seems to have been pushed to my Mac or iPad. Is there a time delay before push occurs ? I've been careful to set everything up correctly and turned on my desired services, but so far, nothing has happened.
Help appreciated,
Rich.

My understanding is that syncing will take place when the mobile device is plugged in to a power source, and the computer has iTunes open on it, and signed in with the relevant Apple ID.

I just added a contact to my iPhone and within a few min it was on the iPad. No power or iTunes. I saw the same behavior with the calendar earlier today.

iTunes and Power are needed only while you're syncing iTunes stuff wirelessly using wi-fi on the same network. Cloud syncing of calendar, contacts and e-mail does not require iTunes sync. It goes through your internet to whatever devices are connected - Mac, Windows or iOS
iCloud sync works through push technology. So whenever there is new content available on a device, it will push it to the cloud, and when there is new content on the cloud, it will push it to the other devices which are presently out of sync. That said, devices do keep checking if there is new content available or not, which does take up network bytes and battery.

Can't Make iPhoto Window Smaller

Hello,
When I try to drag the triangle at the the lower right to make the window
smaller, my iPhoto window jumps larger, below the dock. I know it used to
work so how do I get it back to working to get the window the size I want,
so that I can drag something to import a photo from desktop for example or
other task?
I don't have trouble with any other windows other than iPhoto.
Thanks,
Doris

Larger screen monitors for MacBookPro

I have a new MacBook Pro 17" and find the screen image hard to read
because of its size. I would like to have the 27" Apple display but can't
afford it, at $1,000.
Is it possible to use some other equipment maker's large monitor with
Apple, using the MiniDisplay port on the Macbook? Anyone have
experience or suggestions on this usage? Any particular brand
of external monitor? Is the support FULL SUPPORT--all of the
Apple Lion software works as it should and allows all the functionality
of the dual-monitor support including separate and slaved images?

You can look for any monitor with HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, or even VGA input
- you will just have to buy a Mini Display Port to HDVI/DVI/VGA adapter.
IIRC my Mac Mini even came with a Mini Display Port to VGA or HDMI adapter
but they normally sell for ~$29-$49 at apple.com depending on which one you
need.

For the problem as described, ANY external monitor that you don't already own is an expensive solution.
Why not adjust settings within MacOS to make the existing screen more legible?

I wouldn't "waste" the pixels.
Just increase default font sizes, icon sizes in preferences.

You can use any monitor with a digital input (DVI or HDMI) with your
Macintosh.
It is a not a very well kept secret that Samsung makes all of Apple's
external monitors for them. The really good news is that Samsung-
branded monitors tend to be among the best monitors, at the best
prices, that you can find.
Even better, you can find excellent deals on refurbished (but like
new) Samsung monitors:
If you are looking for a 27-inch monitor, check out this great deal:

To attach your MacBook to this Samsung monitor, you will need this
adapter (I chose an HDMI adapter over a DVI adapter for best picture
quality):

You will also need an HDMI cable. I recommend this premium one:

New Display
Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net hflaxman001
Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:17 pm (PST)
I had a technician visit today to replace the display on my mid-010 iMac. She found a new graphic card included with the bundle. After everything was installed, and I was checking out the new addition, I noticed that the display speed seemed much quicker and less 'boggy' with hi-res hi-def moving images, such as the moving photo 3d screensaver. System profiler says it's the same model and RAM sized card, but the whole thing seems entirely different. Normally, after having it for a few hours, I would chalk it up to psychological impact, but it isn't. Even my girlfriend asked what happened.
I had added 4 gb more of system RAM but being as graphics are discreet now, that should not impact the display. The addition of RAM was 10 days ago, and didn't affect the display at that point.
I wonder if there's a tech resource somewhere that actually tracks these changes and speculates to the public about what's been done. The tech told me that they might have changed vendors or slight design of the display, and that's why the new card.
