This awesome tool allows you to quickly check iPhone 5s stock

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 06:33 PM PDT

Gold iPhone 5s side and back

As I discussed in the recent episode of Let’s Talk Jailbreak, I’ve been feverishly refreshing Apple’s iPhone 5s order page looking for a 32GB gold edition. Yes, I already have a Space Grey iPhone 5s, and I’m happy with it, but the rapper in me is secretly dying to get his paws on a gold version.

Going to Apple’s website and constantly entering in my zip code to find in stock 5s’ in my local area gets to be a bit tedious. Thankfully, one smart individual has created a website that’s solely focused on retrieving iPhone 5s stock in your local area.(...)

The real impact of Apple’s iOS 7 controller support

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 05:58 PM PDT

gaming

Before I started blogging about Apple, I used to work on a number of different gaming websites back in the late 90′s and early 2000′s. The E3 gaming conference was one the highlights of my year, and I regularly ventured out to Los Angeles to cover all of the new releases that were revealed at this touchstone of an event. I even made sure to fly out to Tokyo to cover the Tokyo Games Show before it turned into the shell of its former self that it is today.

Those days were the heydays of gaming coverage. Websites (they weren’t called blogs back then) were thriving, and even print mags were still relatively popular. Publishers used to spend an absurd amount of cash throwing parties and constructing huge booths for the major conferences throughout the year. Open bars were the norm, not the exception. And booth babes. I’ll just leave that one alone.

Of course, a lot of that has now changed. Some things for the better, and a lot of things for the worse, depending on who you ask. Gone are the days of the massively popular trade events that we used to flock to every year. Yes, they still exist, but they’re nothing like the used to be back in the day. During this transition period, we’ve seen gaming staples like Nintendo struggle to remain relevant, while Apple, inadvertent as it may be, rises to dominance.(...)

Another app showcases the iPhone 5s M7 chip: Pedometer++

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Pedometer 1.0 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)Pedometer 1.0 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 002)

Argus is the first app to officially take advantage of the new M7 motion coprocessor found inside the iPhone 5s. As the floodgates are open now, small wonder fitness software makers are scrambling to update their warez with support for the power-efficient chip.

If you own an iPhone 5s, it’s already tracking your movement on a daily basis so M7-compatible apps have a history of what iOS has already recorded to work with.

You can now add David Smith’s Pedometer++ to your list of apps which take advantage of the M7 rather than dutifully perform motion calculations day in day out using the power-hungry A7 processor…(...)

How to fix intermittent iMessage and FaceTime activation issues

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 03:10 PM PDT

iMessage for Mac (undelivered messages 001)

Judging by a growing thread on Apple’s support forums, an unknown portion of people seem to be experiencing issues activating FaceTime and/or iMessage after upgrading their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to iOS 7. On top of that, some of  those who’ve successfully activated the services complain about not being able to send or receive messages, iMessage not falling back to SMS, being able to receive messages but not media and more.

Turns out a few remedies exist to help fix these woes so I’ve included them for your convenience right after the break…(...)

Bluelounge releases Rolio and CableDrop Mini for cable management woes

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 01:24 PM PDT

Rolio before_after

It is no surprise, considering the number of Bluelounge reviews I cover, I am a big fan of this product line. Consequently, when my friend at their office asked if I wanted to check out their latest invention, I quickly responded to the request. Bluelounge makes great products that solve simple everyday problems. Many companies claim to do the same, but setting themselves apart, Bluelounge solves these mundane problems in elegant ways with products like Kii, MiniDock, Mika, and Saidoka.

Today, two new products are announced, Rolio and CableDrop Mini. Both newly released items take on the challenge of creative cord management. Everyone struggles to keep cords in-check on their work stations, but with these two options, at least there is some organization to the madness…(...)

Apple joins Google and others supporting call for NSA and FBI transparency

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 11:53 AM PDT

NSA slide (Apple 1984)

Apple has joined with a number of other technology firms, including Google and Microsoft, supporting legislation in the U.S. House and Senate loosening restrictions on divulging national security requests. A letter from the Center for Democracy and Technology asks Congress to approve two bills aimed at letting tech companies reveal how many national security requests they receive.

The iPhone maker has publicly denied assisting NSA’s PRISM program for tracking Internet use, but is unable to be more transparent with concerned customers. Along with Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo are also suing the government, charging the restrictions on disclosure violate their right to free speech…(...)

Why Retina display is more than twice as responsive as the competition

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 10:58 AM PDT

Agawi TouchMark

Say what you will, but Apple owns the most responsive mobile OS and has the smoothest multitouch implementation by leaps and bounds.

Unsurprisingly, the Retina display hardware is a major part of that accomplishment – and I’m not talking about pixel density or image quality.

No, the key contributing factor to the iPhone’s multitouch immediacy is the short response time of the device's touch panel on the hardware level. In fact, Apple’s capacitive touchscreen implementation runs circles around competition, a recent barrage of tests have proven.

The iPhone 5′s four-inch Retina screen is significantly faster than any of its rivals – up to twice as fast as its nearest competitor. Jump past the fold for detailed findings…(...)

Foxconn could help ship Apple products directly to China to reduce import taxes

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 09:45 AM PDT

Foxconn-Workers

Foxconn, Apple’s longtime partner, has been assembling Apple gadgets for years. The world’s largest manufacturer and product assembler may have been at odds with its prime client lately over slowing sales, but that doesn’t mean the two giants won’t be extending their partnership – quite the contrary. If there’s any substance to a new story published Tuesday, Apple may have found a way to reduce import taxes in mainland China by having Foxconn International provide new logistic and after-sale maintenance services to the technology giant…(...)

Phil Schiller calls out Samsung for benchmark ‘shenanigans’

Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller is at it again, stirring the pot via his Twitter again. Earlier this year he called out Android for its staggering malware problem, and today he put Samsung in his sights.

This morning, Schiller tweeted out a link to an ArsTechnica article called ‘Galaxy Note 3's benchmarking "adjustments" inflate scores by up to 20%.’ And the SVP calls ‘shenanigans’ on Samsung’s attempt to pad its benchmark scores…(...)

Steve Jobs had hand in newly-patented glass entryway for Shanghai store

AppleStorePudongChina_220211

Typically, Apple patents technology sold within its retail locations. However, today the company received a patent for the design and construction of the glass cylindrical entrance to its Apple Store in Shanghai. Unlike most entrances, the one in Shanghai shapes huge slabs of glass, connected by a complex arrangement of fittings to form a building unto itself. To top it all off, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is among the patent inventors…(...)

Carl Icahn pushes Cook for $150B stock buyback over NYC dinner

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 08:43 AM PDT

Carl Icahn (April 2013 Forbes cover)

Dinner with billionaire investor Carl Icahn often gives corporate CEOs heartburn. Icahn is known for buying company shares, then pushing for changes – and it is no different with Apple. Monday night Icahn asked Apple CEO Tim Cook to increase to $150 billion the amount of stock the iPhone maker plans to buy back, more than doubling Apple’s previously pledge of $60 billion. Last night’s New York City dinnertime discussion comes after Icahn invested somewhere near $2 billion in Apple in August. Reports say the activist investor sees Apple shares still undervalued…(...)

Vevo and NHL channels hit Germany in international Apple TV push

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 08:22 AM PDT

appletv_01102013

Although Apple has updated its Apple TV box a few times this year, making it much more useful by enabling a bunch of additional channels, most of the premium content sources are limited to users in the United States due to licensing restrictions. A good example is Netflix, which just rolled out crisp Super HD video streaming that’s unfortunately of little use to the folks living outside the 41 Netflix-supported markets around the globe.

It’s not just paid streaming services: some of the most popular free channels come region-restricted as well. Take Vevo, for example, which got added to the $99 streamer late-August but did not work in all regions. In a sign that Eddy Cue and his team have been able to negotiate a better deal, Apple TV users in Germany are now reporting sightings of both Vevo and NHL channels on their device…(...)

MobileMe please wait

Apple gave former MobileMe members a complimentary twenty gigabytes of free cloud storage upgrade after moving to iCloud between October 12, 2011 and August 1, 2012. The company’s been sending email notices ahead of the cut-off deadline a few times now.

Unfortunately, today marks the day when your complimentary storage expires. Yours truly used to be a paid MobileMe member and today my iCloud storage got automatically adjusted to the free entry-level 5GB iCloud tier. How to rearrange Apple TV icons

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 06:35 AM PDT

Apple TV 5.4 Beta (Conference Room mode, iGen 001)

Power users no doubt are aware of this nifty little feature, but I’m posting it here anyway for the folks who may not have known that their $99 set-top streamer includes ability to adjust the arrangement and display of icons on the main menu, iPhone style. Moving the icons around couldn’t be simpler.

All you need is an Apple TV running the Apple TV 5.1 software or later and a remote – Apple’s own remote will do just fine, but you can pair most infrared controllers to your device.

Let me show you how to rearrange those icons…(...)

iPhone boosts T-Mobile sales, overtakes Android in Japan

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 05:52 AM PDT

T-Mobile iPhone launch line

The iPhone has fueled smartphone sales by Apple’s latest U.S. carrier partner, Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile USA. In the three-month period ended in August, the service provider saw its share of domestic smartphone sales jump to 13.2 percent, up 1 percent.

According to a report released Monday, the carrier began in April attracting owners of feature phones upgrading to smartphones. Now, however, 56 percent of consumers buying an iPhone from T-Mobile are coming from another smartphone. Indeed, more than 38 percent of T-Mobile’s smartphone purchasers previously owned Android handsets…(...)

Verizon will honor weekend upgrade orders with unlimited data

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 02:34 AM PDT

iPhone 4S Verizon LTE

Over the weekend, a number of Verizon customers reported that they were able to upgrade to the iPhone 5s (and other handsets) without losing their grandfathered unlimited data plan—something the carrier put a stop to last summer.

As we expected, this was the result of a software glitch, and Verizon fixed it first thing Monday morning. But here’s something we didn’t see coming: the company says it will honor the orders and let customers keep their unlimited plans…(...)

Apple taps Blue Jays assistant GM to head up App Store sports section

app store sports

In a somewhat odd move, Apple has hired away the Toronto Blue Jays’ assistant manager Jay Sartori for a position on its App Store team. I mean, the company frequently snags top talent from silicon valley, but the MLB?

Apparently, Sartori will be taking over as the manager of the ‘sports and entertainment’ category in the App Store for the Cupertino company—a major departure from his contract and bargaining duties with the Blue Jays…(...)
