I’ve decided to get an iPad Air

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:50 PM PDT

Confessions

If you’ve been listening to Let’s Talk Jailbreak, you know that I’ve been going through a bit of a metamorphosis as of late. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of excess in the name of simplifying and streamlining my life. Sebastien and Cody like to make fun of me because of that, but it is deserved when you consider how I’ve waffled back and forth.

My 64GB iPad mini was one of the casualties of my downsizing efforts. I convinced myself that owning just one iOS device made life a lot simpler. I still believe that managing multiple devices is a bit of a pain, but I’ve decided to go ahead and take the plunge again.(...)

iPhone 5s/5c already comprise 5.5% of all active iPhones globally

ios-phone-pie-chart-global

When the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were released in September, their first weekend of availability sparked a record nine million units sold. Now comes word Apple’s two newest smartphones together represent 5.5 percent of active iPhones worldwide.

And despite Apple’s attempts to repackage last year’s iPhone 5 as this year’s iPhone 5c, new research shows the year-old Apple handsets accounts for one out of every four new iPhone activations…(...)

Microsoft’s Bing gets its iOS 7 revamp and flat icon

Bing 4.2 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 002)Bing 4.2 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)

I’m not using Microsoft’s Bing search engine much on the web, but really meant to fall in love with the iPhone and iPad app, and long before Google’s Search iOS software became sleek. The problem is, Redmond was rolling out those updates way too slow for my taste.

I last checked Bing out some time last year and was disappointed that it still had certain non-Retina elements to it, such as the logo graphics. Today, Bing for the iPhone and iPad has gotten a fresh coat of paint, a nice new flattened logo and a completely revamped user interface re-created from scratch with iOS 7 in mind…(...)

Future OS X, iLife and iWork updates will continue to be free

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 06:06 PM PDT

Apple October 2013 event (Craig Federighi, free software)

One of the easily overlooked aspects of last week’s iPad keynote is how Apple revolutionized software pricing. “The days of spending hundreds of dollars to get most out of your computer are gone,” charismatic software chief Craig Federighi enthusiastically remarked just before revealing that OS X Mavericks will be a free upgrade to everyone.

The move has ushered in "a new era of Mac," he said. And of course on the iOS side, the iLife and iWork suite of apps for content creation and productivity has gone from paid to free for every new iOS device owner.

The best part: future updates to iWork/iLife apps and upcoming new versions of the Mac operating system are going to continue to be completely free. What sort of dark magic is that?(...)

Apple never meant for the iPhone 5c to be an entry-level phone

We’re continuing to dig through our notes from Apple’s earnings call earlier this afternoon, as a lot of stuff was discussed during the 1-hour broadcast. In addition to financials, Cook and co. offered up some great insight into their operations.

We’ve already mentioned a few interesting tidbits, and we’ve just come across another in a comment from Tim Cook on the iPhone 5c. As we’ve said a few times now, Cook confirms that Apple never intended the 5c to be an entry-level phone…(...)

Cook to troops: we’ve never been stronger

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 04:58 PM PDT

Apple October 2013 event (Tim Cook, Apple logo 001)

Rallying up the troops, Apple’s boss Tim Cook has shot an email to all Apple employees, hot on the heels of the company’s strong September quarter earnings report. As collaboration is now a recurring theme at Apple, Cook has made point of expressing his pride with the collaborative effort that has gone into Apple’s latest products.

Apple "has never been stronger” as a result of tighter collaboration between the teams across the company, he remarked. He’ll be addressing employees in a company-wide meeting tomorrow, which will be broadcast to Apple’s teams across the globe. I’ve got the full contents of Cook’s email memo right below…(...)

Apple may be unable to cope with Retina iPad mini demand, says Cook

four iPad mini retina display

In addition to the iPad’s outstanding (yet perfectly plausible) 94 percent share in education (bonus: other amazing stats), Apple’s boss Tim Cook cautioned Wall Street analysts and investors on an earnings call that not everyone may get their hands on an iPad mini with Retina display when it starts shipping in late-November.

It gets worse: he wasn’t confident in Apple’s ability to make enough Retina iPad minis to satisfy Christmas quarter demand either…(...)

Tim Cook: new product categories coming in 2014

tim cook fuqua

The last two months have been very busy for Apple, as the company has refreshed a number of its devices including the iPhone, iPad, the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. But missing from the fall’s festivities was an all-new product.

The good news, though, is that it appears at least one is on the way. During its quarterly earnings call today, Tim Cook said Apple believes it has the skills to create ‘great products’ in categories it’s not currently participating in…(...)

Apple just announced its earnings for its September quarter, and despite all of the 'doom' talk and lowball analyst predictions, the numbers are actually pretty good. In fact, the company set a record for iPhone sales during the 3-month period.

We're just finishing up the conference call, where Tim Cook and his CFO Peter Oppenheimer talked about Apple’s performance, and offered some insight into its future. And as usual, we've rounded up the 15 most interesting points for you…(...)

Apple teases next-gen Mac Pro some more with this classy poster

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 02:49 PM PDT

Mac Pro (poster 001)

Apple really means business with its next-generation Mac Pro desktop. The hype machine went into overdrive during last week’s keynote as Tim Cook & Co. resorted to all sorts of superlatives in pitching the computer’s advanced architecture.

We were already shown how the Mac Pro is made and drooled over Jony Ive’s one-off Product(RED) Mac Pro variant designed for charity.

And now, Apple’s attention turns to the people that keep feeding the beast: journalists. A few select writers have confirmed receiving Apple’s cool posters which promote the machine. In Apple’s own words, the ultimate desktop is “the computer we were insane to build”…(...)

Well, so far so good. Apple announced today that during its fourth quarter of 2013, it sold 33.8 million iPhones, beating Wall Street expectations of 31 million. It also sold 14.1 million iPads and garnered $37 billion in revenue. More after the fold…(...)

One of the top accessory makers and among the leading players in the Apple accessories ecosystem, Logitech, today announced four new keyboard cases and covers designed specifically for Apple’s upcoming iPad Air.

November 1 iPad Air launch will include in-store Personal Pickup

When Apple’s new iPad Air launches in the United States and a few dozen international markets this coming Friday, customers will be able to order their device online for in-store delivery, ready to be collected in person at a nearby store rather than wait for it to be shipped to your doorstep.

That’s the word in the blogosphere and subsequently confirmed by iDB with our own plugged-in sources and made public by Apple’s online Store.

The not-so-unexpected development indicates Apple’s confidence in its ability to meet iPad Air demand on day one, despite launching the device across a whole bunch of markets simultaneously…(...)

I still have yet to find the perfect podcast app that does everything I want, but most of them are good enough to get by. I will say that I seem to fare best with my podcast app flavor of the month, Pocket Casts.

There’s a reason why Pocket Casts is my podcast app of choice, at least for the moment. It’s fast, well designed, and its developers are quick on the draw when it comes to pushing out timely updates. Updates just like this one…(...)

How to add iOS 7 slide to unlock functionality to lesser firmware

Posted: 28 Oct 2013 10:22 AM PDT

Unlock7 Featured

One of the biggest differences between the Lock screen in iOS 7 and the Lock screen found on previous firmware, is the way one goes about unlocking the device. Gone are the days where you had to position your finger in just the right location in order to do so.

With iOS 7, users can slide their fingers anywhere on the Lock screen to unlock, as long as the motion is from left to right. Unlock7 is a recently released jailbreak tweak that seeks to mimic this functionality for devices not running iOS 7. How does it work? Have a look at our hands-on session inside.(...)

Wall Street expects: 33.4M iPhones, 15M iPads, 4.3M iPods, 4.6M Macs

Apple Store Side logo San Francisco

Wall Street expects Apple to return to its usual hit parade later today, announcing record iPhone sales and perhaps giving some insight into how the tech giant’s first ever introduction of two iPhones in one year performed. The iPhone maker could announce 33.4 million iPhones sold during the three-month period, a 24 percent jump from the same quarter in 2012.

Although the iPhone 5s/5c were sold for just a week during the quarter ended September 28, analysts hope to divine whether sales of the iPhone 5c are catching up to the flagship iPhone 5s and if record first weekend sales of nine million units had legs.

The Street also anticipates iPod revenue numbers, which one report suggests could sound the death note for the iconic digital music device…(...)
