Apple admits some iPhone 5s units exhibit battery woes due to ‘manufacturing issue’ Posted: 29 Oct 2013 05:56 PM PDT In a rare but not entirely unprecedented response, Apple’s gone on the record Tuesday with The New York Times (of all publications) to admit that a fairly limited number of iPhone 5s units may be plagued with lower than expected battery life and slow charging issues due to what the company attributed to an unspecified “manufacturing issue”. This isn’t your typical teething problem fixable in software: Apple has said it will provide owners of the affected phones with a replacement unit. Here’s Apple’s full statement on the matter…(...) Apple hiring software engineers to help bring transit data to Maps Posted: 29 Oct 2013 05:16 PM PDT When Apple replaced Google Maps in iOS 6 with its own software last year, one of the biggest user complaints was that the new app didn’t have public transit data. For folks who take the bus or train to work everyday, it was a big deal. The good news, though, is that the company does appear to be working on adding the feature. In addition to acquiring transit experts like HopStop and Embark, Apple has been hiring software engineers for its ‘Transit Routing’ team.(...) Snapseed update brings out Shadows slider and HDR Scape filter Posted: 29 Oct 2013 01:47 PM PDT Snapseed, the popular mobile image editing application Google acquired in September 2012 (making it a free download) is quite a piece of work. As our resident iPhoneographer Emil wrote recently, with just a few simple steps, Snapseed can turn your dull and boring iPhone shots into beautiful and lively Fall photographs that dazzle with just the right amount of color, saturation, emphasis and detail. As part of its ‘A Morning With Google+’ event which revealed interesting developments on the Google+ iOS front, the Internet giant just started shipping a new version of Snapseed which comes with a cool new filter and the ‘Shadows’ image tuning option. Twitter enables inline images/Vines, adds quick reply/retweet/favorite buttons Posted: 29 Oct 2013 01:02 PM PDT The micro-blogging service Twitter just refreshed its mobile apps and the web interface with in-stream previews for images and Vine videos so you can see attached media without having to click the hyperlinks like crazy. It’s a marked improvement over Twitter’s Media mode that similarily infests your timeline with media previews at the expense of completeness, because all non-media tweets get omitted from Media view. Additionally, this edition of Twitter for iPhone and iPad includes a set of handy buttons to quickly re-tweet, reply or favorite someone’s tweet right from the timeline…(...) Rumor: five inch iPhone 6 will be first phablet optimized for one-handed use Posted: 29 Oct 2013 08:06 AM PDT Apple’s next-generation iPhone, likely to be marketed under the iPhone 6 moniker, will be akin to today’s phablets in that it’ll include a five-inch screen with full HD resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 pixels at Retina-friendly 440 pixels per inch density. The screens itself will be provided by long-time supplier LG Display, which is also believed to be close to striking a deal to supply iWatch OLEDs. But unlike a bunch of jumbo-sized Android phones that rock screens measuring five or more inches diagonally, Apple’s device is ostensibly designed with one-hand operation in mind, according to a new report Tuesday…(...) Rotato might be the simplest, most difficult game in the App Store Posted: 29 Oct 2013 04:00 AM PDT A simple game does not have to mean a puzzle game. Think about how simple arcade games were in the early 1980s. In Pac-Man, all you did was move around, eating pellets and avoiding ghosts. Rotato is a lot like Pac-Man. Players move around, collecting coins and avoiding stars. Only this game is simpler because you only move tapping the screen, but it is more difficult, because the playing field is much smaller…(...)
