Michael, gonna put those "restore" steps in back burner, thanks. As I said, ipod worked great in free wifi library. At home though, no luck. Must be Comcast connection gone bad. Router? Says wifi is on, but not connected. Huh? Keep getting flickerings. Anyway, will give a call today to see what provider thinks. Again, thanks.

You make it sound easy, Michael, and if worse comes to worst, gonna give "restore" a shot. Thanks. For now, was told by Comcast, am on a "next to death" modem. Old, I'll admit, but also of suspicious of provider who will be making house call on Saturday to get my wifi and ipod working. Probably with costly new modem and router. Who is Comcast kidding! Oh well, so much for being digitally ignorant!

Michael, don't know what happened to my response to this latest tip of yours, but I did thank you for it and say am gonna keep your info in mind for "restoring". As of now, got Comcast coming to house to check appliances and get my ipod going. Gave up trying to job myself, even with phone call to provider, who informed me modem was a death's door! Will let you know when I'm in ipod heaven again! Lol.

I thought you mentioned previously that you were able to use the wifi on another piece of equipment?? I have a couple of wifi routers whose wifi stopped working while the rest of the router worked fine.

A few years ago my connection (DSL) started acting wonky -- kept having to
reset modem, connection blinked on & off a lot, etc.

Spent time on phone w/ tech support & we decided that the modem was dying.
They sent me a new one ASAP -- no tech visit required & tech support
supplied the instructions for setup. I plugged it in, set things up & all
was well again.

That modem was only the DSL modem, not a router as well; so was the
replacement. I plugged my own router into it.

Recently that one had the all-too-familiar symptoms & I made the switch to
FiOS since I had to do something about the modem anyway & had been planning
to get FiOS for a while. Still with tel co so no problems with my email &
so on, thank goodness. The new setup is a router+wi-fi, but I still just
have my own router plugged into it & didn't even have to re-set-up all my
devices with new p/ws & so on.

If you're renting the modem/router, they should replace it at no charge!
OTOH they may charge for helping you set up devices on the new one.

I don't know how hard it is to set up w/ Cable modem, but for FiOS all I
needed at my Mom's place was the network name & key . That's all I need at
my brother's, too, and he has cable-modem (he had to look on the back of the
modem to find the info -- it's on a sticker there).

Bruce, that's right. Took ipod to local library with wifi and was able to connect smoothly. Not so at home with router/modem. Comcast couldn't do fix over phone so are sending worker to solve wifi problem. Probably means new modem cause was told from company office, "end of life"! Probably why I was getting flickering wifi connection. Thanks for helping.

Probably coulda got free modem too, I guess, bj, but didn't think to ask. Besides, wouldn't know how to put router/modem back in place with all the wires. Will let Comcast people do it when arriving, at a price, of course. As long as I get ipod back working again, will be happy. As I mentioned, was born too early for this tech age! Lol. But I do like hearing how you solved your problems. Am picking up things here and there. Thanks.

'End of life' just means that the company who made the product for Comcast doesn't make it anymore or support it. Heard the same thing when Motorola exited the DSL router business.
