Good to hear, Randy.

I should get my OWC 256GB SSD drive this afternoon. Hope to have it installed and running some time tomorrow. I'll report back on my results.

Can't see images on remote Mac via VNC

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:59 am (PDT)

Both minis are running 10.6.8.

From the local mini, using the VNC client Chicken, I connect to the
remote mini.

When I open a simple jpg image (any one of many on that mini) in
Preview, I see an empty (white) window.

I tried Apple's Screen Sharing and get the same empty window.

Anybody know why this is?

Thanks,
Dave

Auto-mounting a volume?

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Wed Sep 28, 2011 12:40 pm (PDT)

I need to have access to a folder on another Mac on the LAN. This
needs to happen automatically.

I can manually set up file sharing (Sys Prefs > Sharing) and
everything works smoothly when I access the folder. But if I reboot
either of the Macs this falls apart and I must log in to the remote
Mac in order to access the folder again (in a Finder window, click on
the volume listed shown under "Shared", then click the button
"Connect as..." and enter the password).

Is there a way to automate this process such that one Mac can have
access to the folder on the other Mac even after a power-outage and
restart of both Macs?

Both Macs are running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Thanks
Dave

Yup - use Automator to create an .app that does the login then set that app
to run at start up. I have a "ConnSvrs.app" that mounts all of my shared
drives for iTunes and other media and storage.

Howdy.

Set up file sharing, etc., for the networked folder.

Then mount the networked folder.

Then open System Preferences > Users & Groups

Click Login Items tab.

Use the Plus button to navigate to the mounted networked folder and add
it to Login Items.

Flash on CNN

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Wed Sep 28, 2011 1:01 pm (PDT)

I have ClickToPlugin and FlashToHTML5 extensions in Safari 5.0.5.

When I try to view live CNN.com streaming:

<http://www.cnn.com/video/?/tab/live>

the message appears that says I have no Flash installed and need to
download and install it. This is not correct; I have the latest Flash
and it works very well, thank you.

Other sites that require Flash display a "Flash" icon (provided, I
presume, by ClickToPlugin extension) that I click and the video
starts playing.

Is there some way to get the CNN site to behave like other sites do
and simply display the "Flash" icon?

Thanks,
Dave

TV on a G5

This has probably been discussed before, a quick check of the
archives didn't answer my questions though.

Trying to convert my brother from his PC which he admits is slow and
outdated, to a G5 desktop I have sitting here. The G5 is a 2005
model, which can run up to 10.5.x. He states that currently he has a
PCI card in the PC which enables him to watch TV on his display. The
TV signal comes from his cable modem attached to the PC via an
ethernet cable.

What hardware and software do I have to obtain that would allow him
to watch TV on his display with the G5?

Trying to resolve the issues that would keep him from converting to a
Mac OS.

I don't think he'll ever connect the computer to an actual TV, but a
possibility.

Your brother should probably begin by telling you (and us) the make
and model of the TV card. Then you can see on the manufacturer's web
site if any drivers have been provided for that card for that OS
version.

Perhaps it's possible a PCI card from an old Dell computer will work
in a G5! I have my doubts it would work.

I'm having him check the make/model of the card now.

Dan,

If your brother's PCI card doesn't work on the Mac, you can try Eye TV
which does work on the Mac. Not sure if the current versions being
sold work with the older Mac.

QuickTime Nag Screen

Posted by: "stupnski@tiac.net" stupnski@tiac.net   mstupinski

Wed Sep 28, 2011 5:59 pm (PDT)

For the past week I've been finding, at apparently random times, a dialog window open on my screen that displays the QuickTime logo on its left and says:

"Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page. Make sure your internet network connection is active, then click the continue button to check for the software."

I have not attempted to playback any media (at least not any that failed to play), and the window sometimes appears quite soon after I start up the computer. I think it only happens after Safari has been running, however.

Clicking the referenced 'Continue' button took me to a screen displaying what appear to be plug-ins. Unfortunately I can't list them here because I dismissed the dialog this time without clicking on that button.

Has anyone seen this who can explain what it is, and what may be causing it to display?

Thanks,
.................Mike

I used to see that dialog window at times. Haven't seen it for a few years now, though.
It basically gets triggered when a website includes some multimedia component that is not fully compatible with QuickTime. The page you go to is a list of 3rd-party plugins that can enhance QT. I actually installed a couple back in the day, relating to virtual-reality "tours" and the like.
As to why they have disappeared in recent years, that could be related to QT advances in Snow Leopard and/or Lion. Which version of the Mac OS are you running?

Quicken 2011 Windows in Mac VM: any problems?

Posted by: "jamesrob@sonic.net" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

Wed Sep 28, 2011 7:25 pm (PDT)

In many of the discussions I've read here and elsewhere about finding
replacements for Quicken for Mac 2007 and earlier (before Intuit
insulted us with Quicken Essentials for Mac) as we move to the
intel-code only world of OS X 10.7, there have been reports from people
who've given up on finding replacements from other Mac software
publishers and who've instead installed Quicken for Windows on a virtual
machine inside their Macs.
Sounds like a good solution to me, except:
1. I have very good backups of data on my Mac, not very good backups
of data on my Windows VMs (the important stuff is on servers elsewhere,
so up 'til now I've been concerned only with maintaining the integrity
of the VM itself; I use VMware Fusion 4.0.2)
2. In addition to backing up my Mac data using Time Machine and
SuperDuper, I keep my Quicken Mac datafile and the rest of my
~/Documents folder synchronized between my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. I
have no idea how to do this between the virtual machines (Windows 7 Home
Premium on the Mac Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate on the MacBook Pro.
So, I'd be very appreciative of reports from Mac users who've already
gone down this path. How's the performance? How do you back up the
datafile that's in your Windows VM? Can you put the Quicken Windows
datafile in Dropbox so that it's available to you on multiple Windows
machines? Are there any problems converting your data from the Mac to
Windows version of Quicken? I'd especially be grateful for candid
reports of hiccups, so the rest of us won't make the same mistakes.
Thanks so much,Jim Robertson

ClickToPlugin preferences?

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

I installed CTP and found the instructions page:

<http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/>

It describes how customizable it is via the Settings pane, but I
can't see for the life of me how to bring up the Settings page:

<http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/#general>

Anyone find how to get to these Settings?

Thanks,

I now see that in the ClickToPlugin pane under Preferences>Extensions
should have access to the settings in the pane:

<http://www.macfan.nl/software/info/r665-ClickToPlugin.html>

(It's a Dutch-language page, but click on the picture of the
PReferences window to see what the Settings should look like.)

In mine there are no settings -- it says "no settings".

Not sure where to go now...

Found the answer here:

<http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/support.xhtml>

Turns out that the preferences can be accesses via right-click on any web page.

Hope this little voyage helps some archive searcher in the future...
