The question is, "How do I keep them from reappearing?" Browsing in private mode does nothing to keep them from coming back either. They all appear as soon as a new page is opened.

I should note that, in addition to the normal type of cookies, there
is a far more insidious type of cookie called a Flash Cookie.
You can delete these with:
Flush (free)

os-x/
or
http://is.gd/GZ7u1q
More info:

conveniently/
As a side benefit, you might find that your browser is now world's
faster. I've seen some cases where a user has flushed over a
thousand Flash cookies!

Identifiing and Dealing with the Flash Installer Trojan

I've been receiving a lot of private e-mails about how to tell if you
have been infected by the recent Flash Installer Trojan Horse. This
should make it easy. The free anti-virus program ClamXav has been
updated to detect and deal with this Trojan Horse. It identifies it
as: "OSX.Flashback ". Installing and running ClamXav is quick and easy.

Thanks. Generally I don't need to do much looking "under the hood", but some of the advanced "Find" syntax enabled by HoodahSpot might be useful.
I hadn't thought just of Googling System Events.app. I did so now and discovered that it's apparently used quite a bit by AppleScripters who can't rely on the Finder being available. My guess is that it was added to my wife's Login Items by the person who wrote the buggy Safari Toolbar that I think I've expunged from her system. (At least I hope I have).
Guess I should look at EasyFind, too.
Off topic, I know, but I'm also struggling with the "what to replace Quicken with" question. I had just about decided to use Quicken for Windows in my VM, but took a look at MoneyDance and found it very quick, and not a big leap for people used to the way transactions work in Quicken. My QIF import, covering 15 years, probably a dozen checking accounts, most no longer active, too many credit cards, auto loans, CDs, etc. all came in accurately. I don't know why your import went awry, but it looks head and shoulders above the other Quicken replacements from my perspective.
