Siri by the numbers: interesting stats about Apple’s assistant

Posted: 24 May 2012 02:25 PM PDT

Ever since Apple unveiled Siri at its iPhone 4S media event last fall, the digital assistant has remained in the spotlight. Whether it’s celebrity-laden TV spots or class-action lawsuits, it seems like it’s always making headlines.

But some would argue that Siri is more of a black eye for Apple than an accomplishment. It’s spent the last 9 months in beta, its location services still aren’t available abroad, and its functionality in general is still super limited.

In fact, is anyone even using the feature anymore? Infographic time!(...)

Posted: 24 May 2012 12:53 PM PDT

There’s an interesting story developing on the App Store front today. It seems that Apple has just pulled the popular Airfoil Speakers Touch application from its digital download hub, without offering up any kind of explanation.

If you haven’t heard of the app before, it’s essentially a utility that allows allowed you to stream audio from your desktop Mac or PC to an iOS device using AirPlay. It’s been in the App Store for years. So why’d Apple pull it?(...)

iPad 3 passes first-gen model in US, iPad 2 still in the lead

Posted: 24 May 2012 11:47 AM PDT

According to a new research note out today, compared to its launch-week usage share, the new iPad is now being more widely used in the United States than the original iPad, launched in April 2010.

That’s good news for Apple’s post-PC strategy, one that will hopefully put to rest concerns that the Retina display, faster GPU and better cameras won’t entice would-be buyers enough to take the plunge.

Quite the contrary, the iPad 3 is picking up considerable steam even if much of its growth in the United States comes from owners of the original iPad and iPad 2 upgrading to the third-generation model…(...)

Facebook announces new iOS app: Facebook Camera

Posted: 24 May 2012 10:18 AM PDT

As noted by The New York Times, Facebook has announced a new standalone application for the iPhone and iPod touch called Facebook Camera. The app is intended to make it easier to take and share photos on the social network.

Facebook members will be able to use the new software to upload high resolution photos — up to 2048 x 2048, choose from a selection of 15 filters (makes sense), and pipe the images directly into their Facebook photo albums…(...)

Jony Ive explains design ideas, says he’ll stick around at Apple

Posted: 24 May 2012 09:47 AM PDT

Apple’s design head Jonathan Ive certainly has a busy schedule. In between enjoying healthy meals at Apple’s cafeteria, working out in a gym and conceiving that non-TV TV in his secret design bunker at 1 Infinite Loop, he found time to fly to Britain earlier this week to receive a knighthood in honor of his contributions to industrial design.

He also sat for a little one-on-one with The Daily Telegraph’s Shane Richmond.

And today, BBC Radio 4 is treating us to a four-minute audio interview with London-born, softly spoken chief of industrial design and vice president at Apple.

Despite concerns that he might feel homesick, Ive has every intention to stick around at Apple and continue churning out great stuff (as he previously said that the best is yet to come)…(...)

iTV? Think iHub.

Posted: 24 May 2012 06:53 AM PDT

According to Forrester Research, the key competitive advantage of Apple’s rumored television set – often referred to in media reports as the iTV – won’t be the television part per se.

Instead, one analyst thinks Apple should sell the world's first non-TV TV, which would entail convincing folks they need a new screen in their lives.

It should enable the ultimate portability in that one should be able to hang it on any wall where the family congregates for the usual activities and of course it would run apps and represent the ultimate realization of everything Apple stands for…(...)
