Unfortunately, the virtual machines can occupy a large amount of disk space
(several gigabytes.) Emptying the trash takes longer with extremely large
items within.
You can try the following terminal commands (Note capitalization; Unix is
case-sensitive):

cd $HOME/.Trash
rm -r *
cd $HOME

Note also, the trash directory has a period as the first character.

If you aren't command-line savvy, I'd recommend staying away from the
command line.

Instead, I recommend that you download this free utility that will
give the appropriate command for you:

TrashIt! (free)
http://www.nonamescriptware.com/downloads-new/

If you double-click on TrashIt's program icon, it will delete
what is in your trash with extreme prejudice.
If you drop either a folder or file(s) onto TrashIt's program icon,
it will delete what you dropped on it, no matter where those files or
folders reside. (They don't have to be in the Trash can.)

Thanks Randy,

That's what I did and it solved the (trash) problem in short order. Nice little app.

Re: LaCie Now has eSATA to Thunderbolt Converter

Howdy.

Info on Thunderbolt speed and comparison to other devices.

Bill, this "book" isn't intended to overwhelming answer your question
but hopefully will provide some info for group members who want to
delve a bit deeper into this data transfer topic.

Thunderbolt is bi-directional and dual-channel.

That means there are two data paths and both data paths can move data
in both directions.

Each of the dual channels can move data at 10 Gigabits per second
(Gbps) and can achieve this speed in both directions at the same time.

Thunderbolt can be daisy chained like FireWire, SCSI. USB can't be
daisy chained.

Multiple types of data ports/protocols/devices can be connected to
Thunderbolt - - to the same cable via an adapter hub.

Thunderbolt speed is dependent on what it's connected to.

Thunderbolt won't speed up USB, FireWire, HDMI, SCSI, VGA, eSATA
devices except that you could be moving USB AND FireWire and eSATA data
simultaneously at very fast speeds on the same Thunderbolt cable.

Thunderbolt cables are also more expensive because they have a chip in
the plug connector at both ends. Intel is said to be close to a hybrid
Thunderbolt fiber optic cable with a copper electric strand for
carrying power.

Terms and names.

Thunderbolt is Apple's trademarked name but may have been assigned to
Intel by Apple.

Light Peak is Intel's trade name.

I suspect that Thunderbolt may have grown out of Apple's FireWire
protocol but I don't know this for a fact.

Here's a Wikipedia article that compares data transfer speeds for
dozens of devices and technologies.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bit_rates>

The speed rating acronyms (like KBps) used are in many formats and when
these acronyms are used on many web sites and in commercial packaging
are often used incorrectly.

These terms get even more confusing because some have been around
before terms were standardized and are still in common usage.
Telephony speeds may be expressed using the acronym in a different form
than computer peripheral speeds.

kbps = kilo bits per second
kBps = kilo bytes per second
mbps = mega bits per second
mBps = mega bytes per second
Gbps = giga bits per second
GBps = giga bytes per second

Modem 56k = 5.6 kBps

Apple's retired LocalTalk network = 28.8 kBps

DSL (ADSL in some countries) = 3,0072 kBps

Ethernet 10Base = 1.25 MB/s
Ethernet, Fast Ethernet 100Base = 12.5 MBps
Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet 1000Base = 125 MBps

USB 1.1 = 12 Mbps
USB 2.0 = 480 Mbps
USB 3.0 = 625 MBps
FireWire 400 = 50 MBps
FireWire 800 = 98.3 MBps
eSATA 3 = 300 MBps

Bluetooth 2.0 = 375 kB/s
IEEE 802.11b WiFi = 1,375 MBps
IEEE 802.11g WiFi = 6.75 MBps
IEEE 802.11n WiFi = 37.5 MBps
IEEE 802.11ac WiFi = 850 MBps

PCIe PCI Express card = 250 MBps (this is 1 of many types)

Thunderbolt = 1.25 GBps (with both channels 1.25 GBps X 2, or 10 Gbps X
2)

Steve Jobs movies all over the place

Howdy.

Sony says that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin may write the adaptation of
the Isaacson biography of Steve Jobs.

Other rumors say that Noah Wyle or George Clooney could be under
consideration for the Jobs part.

Noah Wyle played Steve Jobs in a movie made in the late 1990s called
"The Pirates of Silicon Valley."

There is an independent film currently being made with Ashton Kutcher
in the Jobs role.

It's raining Jobs - movies.

The original Lion insall_esd (I think that's the name), is needed.

Not exactly. If you have, as a source, a hard drive with Lion installed, you can use Lion Recovery Disk Assistant from Apple

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

to create an external Lion recovery disk that will install Lion on any hard drive that is in a computer that supports Lion. I have my external Recovery HD installed on a 1GB partition of a 4GB flash drive. You don't need the almost-4GB Install_ESD file.

Hope this helps.

I've posted this link before, here's a free utility to create either a bootable thumb or DVD to install Lion directly.  You do need the core lion install file to create either, however, it works extremely well.  It also contains the basic disk utilities when you boot from it.

Do you have the latest update for Fusion? You might want to try that,
especially if you have 10.7.4

I have Fusion but I have been using Parallels exclusively for a while.
Fusion still works for me, but I use Win 7.

If everything is working, forget about new software. When you reach the point that something no longer works because it needs upgrading, do it then.

There's a little more to it truth be told. Not quite that simple.
I face the same decisions, that's why I've been thinking about it too...

I have an iMac using 10.6.8. Very nice OS, by the way. I'm happy with it.
I would NOT have considered a change this quickly (my machine is only 5
years old!) but... as my wife points out, my machine if FIVE years old!
Suggests I look at a new iMac. She may even help pay for it. So...I did.
It looks really good. Except. It comes with the latest Lion... So, I
have the same questions Dolores has.

I COULD last for some time yet, I suppose, if my machine holds up. On
the other hand, will it?
I recently solved a back up external HD problem, so I now have backups
again.
What's next?
I'd LOVE to have a faster machine, with double the RAM I now have, and
an SDXC slot. And other more subtle but desirable features.
But... how will I get along with Lion?
Won't know until I check it out, I guess...

Or do what I do. Create a spreadsheet to weigh the pros and cons.

First column, going down the page I write a list of things I want or need.

Next column, I write what I currently use be it software or hardware. Example, spreadsheet app, my existing scanner.

Next column, will it work in the new OS or Mac. Example, scanner software will not run in 10.7.

Next two columns, replacement and cost. Examples, VueScan will run the old scanner, $x's. Time to dump MS Office, so I switched to Numbers and Pages, for less than half the price of a new copy of Office.

When I have more pros than cons, and the cost is as low as I can get it or I can defer some of the costs, I make the switch. It takes a little time, and I am not on the bleeding edge anymore, but I can afford to be, anymore.

An example of deferring the cost, I can run the old scanner software from an external cloned HD until I can afford VueScan. It is an old existing HD.

I'd only upgrade to Lion (or to Mountain Lion), if there is something
in either of those OS's that you feel that you need.

There aren't many killer new features in Lion. The only one that I
can think of offhand is iCloud. Do you need iCloud?

A huge disincentive to upgrade to Lion or beyond is the absence of
Rosetta. Do you have lots of applications that require Rosetta? You
can check here:
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
If you have to replace a lot of broken apps, upgrading to Lion or
beyond will be very expensive.

By and large, I don't think that upgrading to a newer OS is always
"better." You should only upgrade if you have an articulable reason
to do so.

Personally, I don't use Lion as the default OS on any of my Macs.
Several are running Snow Leopard, and I even have one that is still
running Tiger so that I can continue to use applications for which
there is no update or equivalent. I've played with Lion and I don't
see any reason that I want to upgrade to it just now.

The other side of the coins is, I want a better, newer iMac, but the
latest ones come with Lion pre-installed.
I don't plan to switch in order to get a new OS, I plan to switch to
upgrade my computer!
I would far prefer to have the use of 10.6.8, but it appears that's not
possible with a new iMac.
Dilemma, eh?
If I opt for the latest and greatest iMac, I seem to be forced to accept
an OS I have no current desire to use...

Contact Sheet app for videos - Thumbs

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Wed May 16, 2012 6:43 pm (PDT)

Howdy.

MacUpdate today only (May 16) has a discount price offer for a video
contact sheet making program named Thumbs.

I just test it and then bought it.

This has been a software area with few offerings for Macintosh.

Price today only via MacUpdate promo is $6.99 USD.

Download it.

Program works by drag n drop and so far has worked very rapidly with
mov, mpg, avi, and even wmv video file formats.

<https://www.mupromo.com/> for discount pricing today only.

Maker's web site is: <http://thumbsapp.com/>

Regular price is $9.99 USD.

Program preferences let you adjust the grid size and spacing for

Can't send photo with text message (iPhone 3Gs)

As best I understand it by searching the 'net, I should -- when
creating a text message -- be able to touch the camera icon at the
corner of the keyboard and access the Photos library or the camera.

The icon is not responding. I touch it and nothing happens.

Is there a setting that should be turned on or such?

Thanks,
Dave

Is the camera icon greyed out?  I found this to be the case under one account I had on the iPhone.  I closed all background apps, shut the phone down, and restarted.  Everything was well then.

Sorry if I'm disturbing your ascencion dinner. I'm hoping y'all can help me with this.

My QuickTime Player keeps on crashing. I would launch QTP, it would freeze and crash. I double click a movie file, it would launch QTP, it would freeze, and crash

I tried putting com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist out of the preferences folder. but QTP still crashes
I tried putting all the *.component files out of the library>quicktime folder, but QTP still crashes
I tried logging out then back in, but QTP still crashes.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks in advance
