reopen windows when logging back in

Posted by: "hpsbenbenek" houseplantpicturestudio@charter.net   hpsbenbenek

Since I've been using my new Mac Mini, I've been plagued by "reopen windows when logging back in" - I leave the option unchecked when I shut down or restart - plus I leave the option unchecked in General Preferences.

I know Apple addressed the "reopen windows" issue in its ltest update,
but my windows continue to open when I start my Mac

Is there a foolproof Terminal way to stop this?

thanks

Have you considered closing the Apps down when you are done with them, before shutting down the computer?

Here is how to completely turn off "auto-resume":

In System Preferences select the General tab. At the bottom of that
page is a checkbox labeled "Restore windows when quitting and re-
opening apps." If you uncheck that, your apps will continue to behave
as they did in Snow Leopard.
http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/20/how-to-disable-lions-resume-feature/

The thing is, auto-resume is a pretty neat feature for some
purposes. Ideally you would be able to enable it when you have a
need for it in a particular application. Here is a free preferences
pane that will allow you to use (or not use) the auto-resume feature
on a per-app basis:

A recent system update, I believe it is 10.7.4, fixes that for good.

Here's a page on the terminal command to stop this:

Easiest way is to get the Automator program "Quit All Apps" and run that at shutdown. You can omit 'Mail' or any other apps you would like to open automatically on startup. Google 'Quit All Apps'.

I've tried several ways to accomplish this and the terminal command that
I pointed the group towards is by far the easiest, and most thorough way
to accomplish this. No muss, no fuss, no external procedure running!

plugins

A yellow strip message keeps appearing across my screen saying, some plugins for this page are out of date. On the right side end of this strip there's a button on which is written update plugins. But when I hit the button, I'm told there are no plugins that need updating. I've gone to look for needed updates but a message says there no none.

what's with that?

Could be a Trojan Horse. There are at least two Trojan Horses that
convince you to download and install them this way.

You may want to download this free anti-virus program and use it to
scan your Mac to make sure that it is clean:

ClamXav (free)
http://www.clamxav.com/

On the other hand, if you are running an older PowerPC-based Mac
(like a PowerMac G5 or iMac G5 or earlier) and you have Tiger
installed (OS X 10.4), I've heard of users getting false pop-ups that
say that they need to update their plug-ins, but they can't because
there haven't been any updates.

Thank you Randy,

Yes, my computer is old:
eMac
10.4.11
1.25 GH2 Power PC G4
1.25 GB DDR SDRAM

I was prompted to download a newer version on Flash player and Java (not sure the Java worked). Plus, I downloaded MacKeeper and now ClamXav. Kitty

Randy,

Now thing notice is popping up:

"Automatic page updates causing problems with your screen reader?

If you are using a screen reader and having problems using Mail, it might help to disable automatic page updates. Please note, this will also disable chat and text messaging within Yahoo! Mail. You can toggle automatic updates on and off using the link below. Disable automatic page updates".

Not sure what I should or shouldn't do now. K

It (the new pop up) is preventing me from going to my mail.
I've not gone to the latest greatest Firefox b/c of their disclosure on privacy issues (our lack of privacy). So could that be at least part of the problem? K

I've never seen or heard of that message before. So I can't tell you
what to do.

Sounds like you have a problem with Yahoo, not your Mac.

Thanks Daly, I get that but I still don't know how to enlarge the thumbnails I choose to send. Renaming each photo and all that 'back and forthing' is much too tedious and time consuming. There's got to be a better way. Kitty

Kitty,

Like Daly and I have told you, you can not enlarge them inside your email navigation. No way. No how. Not gonna happen. Have I made that clear?

You can view them outside of your email and get the name of the file and then when you navigate to them from within your email and you can quickly locate the correct one by the file name, but, and let me make this clear, you can not enlarge the thumbnails while in your email.

Capish? ¿Comprende? Understand?

Brent,

No need to start talking down to and treating me badly because I'm having a hard time figuring out a simpler way to enlarge the thumbnails. I never said I was trying to enlarge them from my email, tho it would certainly be a good thing if one could.

I won't bring it up anymore but will always wonder how others are able to share photos while I can't for not being able to see which ones I'm dealing. K

Yes you are right, there is a better way!

Use Mail, the email client that comes with OS X. You should have it already installed on your computer if you are using OS X. It is according to my opinion one of the best email clients for the Mac, if not the best one. It is for the novice and the professional user alike. It works seamlessly with iPhoto (has an integrated picture browser which gives you an instant access to all your photos in iPhoto; photos can be enlarged before you select and send them).

Is there any particular reason why you are using a web based email service like Yahoo? You can have Yahoo send all your emails directly to Mail. If you need help with that then let us know.

You mentioned that your iPhoto is version 5. That is a very old version. Updating your software is up to you, that's none of our business, but what we ALWAYS *do* want to know in order to be able to help you is

1) what version of OS X you are using
2) what version of the software in question you are using; in this case it would be iPhoto.

You should include this information in ALL your posts to the list, preferably as a signature. Look at my signature here:

Anna Larson
OS X 10.7.4
MacBook Pro 17''

It includes the minimal information everybody needs to know if I am asking for help on this list. It saves time; if I don't include this in the signature the first thing people will start asking is what system I am using, etc. Such questions and answers may even take several days, and that is definitely contra productive.

Another thing you must learn is to use screen shots to help people here helping you. A picture is worth a thousand words. In order to send screen shots to the list do this:

A) Take a screen shot on your computer and place the picture on the Desktop. I assume you know how to do this.

B) As next, open your browser and type or paste

http://minus.com/

into the URL address field of your browser. Then hit return or the enter key. You will be taken to a free web service called "minus.com". Now you just drag your screen shot from the Desktop to the webpage; the webpage turns gray; now drop the screen shot and you will see a progress bar while your file (= screen shot) is being uploaded. When it's finished take a look at the URL address field. A download link has been created for you. All you have to do now is to copy the link which will look something like this:

http://minus.com/mTqBGtuM5/

and paste it into your email. This will enable us to see the screen shot you just uploaded by clicking on the link.

The service is absolutely FREE. You don't have to sign up or give any information such as an email address. You just drag and drop and in two or three seconds you have your download link. This couldn't be easier. The screen shot (or files you uploaded) will be accessible for 30 days. Then they will be automatically deleted. You don't even have to think about it. It's a fire and forget operation. -- If, on the other hand, you want it to stay permanently online (let's say you are sharing pictures or music with friends) then you have to sign in. That's free too, but I'm not going into that here; that's not on our agenda now.

You have had three regular contributors tell you that it can not be done, and been told a way to accomplish it another way. Yet you ask the same question again.

So excuse me for my frustration and for trying to help.

Kitty,

If this is not about iPhoto and not about email, what is it that you are
using? Perhaps you could take a screenshot and send it to me directly, or
upload it to
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macsupportcentral/photos/album/0/list> ?

Traveling in Europe with ATT iPads

My wife and I are traveling to France from the US in August. We'll have a very busy schedule for our 3 days in Paris, and then we'll be in very rural parts of Normandy and Brittany for the next week before returning to Paris for one more night. We have an ATT iPad2 now and may add a "3rd generation" iPad before we travel. We also have ATT iPhone 4ses, but we know they're locked to ATT's US network, and that ATT will not unlock them.

I've Googled this until I'm google-eyed, read many things about trying to get cellular data connectivity in France, and found that many posters are obviously uninformed, e.g., "there's no Micro-SIM slot in the ATT iPad2." (I'm looking at my MicroSIM card right now). Other untruths include "WiFi is everywhere; you won't need cellular data."

However, I've read pretty consistently that it's quite difficult for travelers from the US to obtain a Micro SIM for iPad cellular data connections once they get to France, claiming that a French residence address, French bank account, and/or French-issued credit card is/are necessary to obtain a micro-SIM card in France. Is that really true?

I've found one company, "LeFrenchMobile" <http://www.lefrenchmobile.com/en/contact-us.html> that offers to sell me a card now (I think), but the site is a bit vague about replenishing the card, avoiding continuing billing once we return home, etc.

I have a SafariBooksOnline account (great resource, by the way), but clicking through tables of contents in most of the books on the iPad I, don't find this covered at all other than generic advice such as "get a local micro SIM card when you travel outside the US."

Can anyone share personal experience or knowledge on what we can do now to help make our trip this summer digitally painless?

Assuming there's a "happy" answer to our question, I'll be back with questions about using Skype or Google Voice to make "phone" calls back to the US while we're overseas.

Thanks so much,
