Mactracker is said to have reported on the Mid-2011 21.5" iMac, that the:

Original OS loaded was 10.6.6
A later OS version was 10.6.7
Max OS ~ Latest release of OSX.

I was hinging my confidence on that report.

I figure that any model of machine that is still that same model, that
was released with Snow Leopard will still be able to use any version of
Snow Leopard.

I'll attempt to get the unit's serial number, but...it will be here by
Tuesday, so...

Cross my fingers!

I just got off the line with Apple Support.
The first advisor couldn't answer my questions, so they upped me to a
higher level.
They were unable to positively tell me just what OS had been installed
on my refurb iMac.
At first, they followed the company line, and said it was probably Lion.
My next question was, if it turned out to be Lion, and I wanted to
uninstall Lion and install Snow Leopard instead, will the machine allow
that.
He said Oh yes it would.

Right. Hahahah. Anyhow, I'll report back on what I got, when I get it
on Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks to everyone for the kind help...

It has been a long time since OS versions were customized for the
particular machine. Nowadays a disk with OS-X version whatever will
boot any machine that can run that, other than the DVD packed with a
particular machine. Do you have a bootable external hard drive with
Snow Leopard? Take it to the store and get proof that the machine can
run 10.6. In fact it need not be a hard drive. A generic 10.6 install
DVD (sold as a retail unit, not packed with a particular computer)
will either boot or not boot that computer, and that should answer it
for you.

Suggestion. Nowadays, with the newer OS's you can partition the disk
without losing data, as long as there is enough room on it. (You
can't partition a 500GB disk into 2 250GB partitions if it already is
300GB full). A new machine would have plenty of room to do that.
Partition the drive and put Snow Leopard on the one and keep Lion on
the other.

Barry,

Have you done this?

I have read many post of people wanting both SL and Lion on their HD and not succeeding. Some of them are trying to go earlier than the original OS for their Mac, but IRRC some had upgraded to Lion. There also seems to be an issue if there is a Boot Camp partition.

With only a 200GB HD in my MBP, I but SL on and external and I am booting less often into it.

I've never had a Boot Camp partition, so I can't address that. I
admit that I have never tried to partition a volume that already has
stuff on it, so I certainly would suggest a full clone before trying
it. However, Drive Genius has said for many years that you can do
that, and the latest versions of OS-X, starting at least with Snow
Leopard, maybe even Leopard, say you can do that. Personally, I HAVE
run disks with several bootable partitions, and it works fine.

I have run several OS on a single Mac from several partitions or HD in the past, also.

I don't remember all the reasons I didn't partition on this occasion with my MBP. I remember one of the reasons was I didn't want to have tiny partitions.

I think I ran into a problem with repartitioning with an existing Boot Camp partition, and the fear of losing access to Windows XP on the partition. Lion's Boot Camp supposedly won't work with Windows XP, but it will when you upgrade from 10.6.

In _Slash-Gear's_ review of the mid-2011 iMacs, they have this to say:

"OS X Snow Leopard is pre-installed, though Apple's refreshed operating
system, OS X Lion, is expected sometime this summer."

Just in case you opt for an Apple Rebuilt like I did.

By the way, the mid-2011 iMac is nearly identical to the 2012 iMac,
except they claim to have OS 10.6.6 or 10.6.7. Works for me.

iMac and external graphics via Thunderbolt

Posted by: "Jeff" jbturof@yahoo.com   jbturof

Hello everyone.
I've posted recently about purchasing a Mac Pro vs PC workstation and now I'm considering buying an 27" i7 iMac instead, but I have a question regarding Thunderbolt.
I know nothing about it except roughly how it works. I have a real need to have a better graphics card than the Radeon 6970 that comes with the iMac as the 3d software I use works best with nVidia cards---specifically Quadro cards.
Someone told me recently that there is a way to hook up an external video card via Thunderbolt and use it as the primary instead of the internal Radeon.
Is this true? And what's involved with doing it?

Any light you all can shed on this for me would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Howdy Jeff.

I've been trying to post Thunderbolt news here from time-to-time. The
technology may finally be taking off.

Currently the Thunderbolt cables available are copper based but we are
seeing news that Intel may almost have ready a Thunderbolt cable with
fiber optic plus a copper line for power transmission.

This is an interesting topic to learn about in case Apple decides to
never make a tower computer again. Shame shame shame if that is the
case (as it were).

The cables are also expensive due to limited production and because of
a required chip in each plug end.

What you are asking about is sometimes called a "card cage." Card
cages (under various other names also) have been around for many years
but are aimed at higher end and professional users.

I think there are now several brands of Thunderbolt card cages
available.

Try a search with these terms:

card cage
card case
expansion case
PCIe expansion case
PCIe card adapter expansion

Check this Sonnet site for some information.

<http://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/>

Also check this Magma site:

<http://www.magma.com/thunderbolt.asp>

MLogic may also have a card cage but I'm not sure whether it's actually
shipping.

<http://www.mlogic.com>

WHOOPS! Just read a little more on mLogic's mLink device and it
apparently doesn't accept video cards.

At this time these devices are not cheap.

However, the flexibility of adding other cards, of switching cards, and
upgrading cards is an important thing to consider.

It's also a very good idea to check on potential driver requirements.
It may be the situation that a driver is not required for a current Mac
with a Thunderbolt port built in. I don't know about a MacPro or
Windows system where Thunderbolt is still a foreign topic but this
would be worth a message to the makers's tech service/customer support
prior to purchase.

The Magma device, more expensive, has 3 slots for full length cards
while the Sonnet device has 2 slots for the smaller card but only
supports 1 full length card.

Howdy.

You are not understanding this.

You are not required to use Gmail account with Apple's Mail program.
You can if you want.

I use several email programs including Apple's Mail with Verizon email,
Google's Gmail, and Yahoo email.

For Gmail, in order for it to work with any email client program like
Mail, you need to be sure you enable the POP feature in Google's
Gmail. You do this be logging in to Gmail online with your web browser
and selecting the POP setting in Gmail's preferences. Full
instructions and settings information are available in Gmail (logged in
online with your web browser) for creating and configuring a Gmail
account in Apple's Mail and other email programs.

In fact, I have my Yahoo mail set to forward to my Gmail. I then use
Gmail in my email program to download all Yahoo and Gmail messages and
have filters/rules set to send the messages automatically to separate
inboxes for each group and mail service.

Even when you are sending and receiving Gmail mail via the Apple Mail
program it is still a good idea to use your web browser and log into
your Gmail account occasionally and check the spam filter to be sure
that Gmail's online spam filter isn't picking message that you want to
receive and then to empty the Gmail Trash yourself. It will sometimes
fill up if you are a busy emailer and prevent people from sending new
messages.

POP is one choice. IMAP is the other choice. But both choices need to
be made in Gmail preferences/settings when logged in online. I think
that some choose IMAP when using mobile devices like iPhone since IMAP
was originally intended to keep files on the mail server computer after
being downloaded to a client email program (which means it's easier to
see the same mail on both the iPhone and on your computer) while POP
was originally intended to delete files from the email server after
they get downloaded to the client email program (like Mail). However,
this distinction is now blurred and there are options available for
changing this behavior in POP.

To add to Dan's reply:-

There are many email *clients* available on various "platforms"
(hardware-OS combinations) and Mail is just one on them.

There are many email services available and Gmail is just one of them.

Just about any client can be used with just about any service.

Many email services can also be used with a browser and this is "webmail".

Looking for an alias manager

Posted by: "Anna Larson" pix@maksimo.de   yovard@ymail.com

Fri May 18, 2012 8:01 am (PDT)

Hello,

I make extensive use of aliases. Having just replaced the internal drive with a larger one I now face the problem that aliases can not be opened because the original items can not be found, which in fact isn't surprising because they are all on the old drive. -- I used Migration Assistant so that I have copies of all the original files on the new drive.

Are there any programs available for Intel machines that can fix the broken links? Or do I have to fix them manually one by one?

Fixing them that way isn't difficult because all I have to do is to search for the identical file names in Spotlight. But this method is very time consuming.

There used to be several Alias manager available in the past. Unfortunately none of them works on an Intel machine as far as I can see.

Any suggestions?

Just an FYI:

One of the best Mac applications for illustrators who like to mess
around with fonts has been Typestyler. It was a kill app in the
pre-OSX days, then took at least a decade to be made available on OSX.

When it did appear, it was priced ridiculously at $395.

This week I discovered the developer came to his senses and is
distributing TypeStyler at the App Store for $59.95 -- an
outrageously good price. Not sure if this is for a limited time,
but if you're in the art/illustration field, it's a hell of a great
deal.

BTW, I'm just a fan, I have no affiliation with them.

VLC is OK, but Perian is pretty transparent to applications as it stands.  One does not need to open a utility to have incompatible audio 'translated' to audible, playable audio by most applications now.

Monday, evenflow updated their pb servers. Mac users having purchased COD4 from the Apple Store were knocked out of web multiplayer. To begin playing again follow the instructions at the below link EXACTLY, to get back up and running. I have played this afternoon for the first time since Monday, however, there are not many back up and playing yet.

Time Machine and Shutting Down my Mac

Posted by: "ELIOT PYLE" lpyle@pacbell.net   lpyle@pacbell.net

When I am through using my Mac for the day, I usually put it in Sleep mode, or sometimes just shut it down. This action seems to always cause some problem with Time Machine when restarting.

Restarting usually ends up with a black screen and a rotating colored ball. I power down the disc drive and things seem to clear up. I can then usually power up the disc drive and then stating up. This can sometimes cause a problem requiring a computer power down and then a power up, along with turning the disc off and on again.

I did not have a problem with Time Machine under a previous Mac operating system, Leopard I believe, Time Machine just ran fine. I have checked the apple web site support and have not found anything of help.

I am missing something here and short of ejecting the time machine disc before sleep, what else can I do?

I have a vague recollection of some software in other disc drives that can sense a power down and then shutting down quietly. May have just been a dream???

I am running OSX 10.7.4 and using a 2GB LaCie drive on a firewire 800 port.

I tried another account, and QuickTime Player crashed also.

I restarted using the System DVD, ran Disk utility, and now QTP plays well.

Thanks a lot for all your help, even if it's just wishing me well.

I'm getting a new iMac on Tuesday. Shall I do the above before I take
both in to my Apple store to have them transfer the data from the old to
the new one?

Last time I did this I had a brain that worked better than it is now!
<g> That's why I'm going to let the Apple store do it for me.

Denver Dan is usually a fountain of Mac OS knowledge, but I have to disagree with him on this one. If you begin configuration of your new Mac by creating a user account, then try to use Migration Assistant to import data from your old Mac, it WON'T pour into that account; you'll end up with TWO user accounts with nearly identical names.

Far better to take the new Mac home unconfigured if you can't bring the old one to the Apple Store to have them import your data. What works is allowing Migration Assistant to recreate your main user account in the same location on your shiny new Mac. If you start configuration of the Mac manually in the store, you'll end up with a permissions mess when you try to import stuff from "your" user account on your old Mac into "your" user account on the new one

One other bit of commonly given advice that I disagree with: it's often said that you'll be better protected from Malware attacks if you DON'T give your main user account administrator privileges. The second or third time I read this I tried to take an informal poll, asking either here or on another Mac email list how many Mac Mavens followed this advice. I don't recall getting a single positive answer!
