Check out these awesome iPhone-controlled RC cars

Posted: 15 May 2012 02:00 PM PDT

There’s no shortage of iPhone-controlled vehicles on the market these days. We’ve seen cars, helicopters, robots, and even tiny spheres that can be controlled with Apple’s handset. But we’ve never seen anything look this good.

The folks over at iHelicopters.net, yes, the makers of the rocket-launching Cobra copter, just informed us that they’ve got a new lineup of iPhone-controlled RC cars out that we wouldn’t want to miss. And they were right…(...)

On clueless analysts and iTV being such a “terrible use of retail space”

Posted: 15 May 2012 01:40 PM PDT

Pacific Crest’s Andy Hargreaves wins the coveted title for this week’s Most Idiotic Analysis concerning a rumored HD TV television set from Apple, aptly dubbed by the press the iTV.

In a note issued to clients on Tuesday, Hargreaves provided two arguments against an Apple-branded telly.

First, such a device would be of little value to couch potatoes unless it came with a bucket load of premium Hollywood entertainment. Up to a point, he argued Apple thus far has failed to get content owners in line to stream movies and television shows to the TV.

Bear with me for a sec.

Secondly, he wrote a 46-inch HD TV set “would be a terrible use of retail space relative to iPhone, iPad or the Apple TV set-top box”.

Has this guy heard of warehouses? What about jumbo-sized walls of Apple’s retail stores? And whoever said Apple would need to stock hundreds of big-screen iTVs in retail outlets, especially if they’ll fetch a cool $2,000 a pop, as rumored…(...)

PatentlyApple points to a number of newly-granted patents published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office with Apple’s name on them. And out of the 20 or so filings, there’s one particular invention that stands out.

Apple looking to bring WatchESPN app to Apple TV

Posted: 15 May 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Bloomberg is out with a new report this afternoon, claiming that Apple is in talks with Disney to bring its WatchESPN app to the Apple TV. The app, which is currently available on the iPhone and iPad, allows existing ESPN subscribers to watch sporting events on the go.

Apple TV already contains apps from the NBA, MLB, and NHL — all of which provide live broadcasts of league games to subscribers. But ESPN’s offering would feature much more rounded coverage, including basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis and more…(...)

Greenpeace protests outside of Apple HQ for cleaner cloud

Posted: 15 May 2012 11:14 AM PDT

Environmental friendliness has been an important subject for Apple over the past few years. It’s currently building one of the largest solar panel farms in the U.S. to power its North Carolina data center, and plans to do the same thing in Oregon.

But apparently that isn’t enough for the folks at Greenpeace. The environmental organization recently staged a major protest outside of Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA, pleading with the company to increase its ‘Green’ efforts…(...)

Nokia accuses Apple of recalibrating Siri to name iPhone the best phone

Posted: 15 May 2012 10:58 AM PDT

You’ve probably seen reports on how Siri was telling the world that Nokia’s Lumia 900 was the best smartphone ever.

She was simply relaying a response provided by the Wolfram Alpha computational knowledge engine which averaged customer reviews across the web.

But Apple has taught Siri better so she now replies with “You’re kidding, right?” or “The one you’re holding in your hand” or somesuch response.

Needles to say, Nokia wasn’t too happy and was quick to accuse Apple of recalibrating Siri, tarnishing her credibility in the process. As if Nokia didn’t have other worries on its mind, mind you…(...)

Delusional Hearst CEO claims dull print replicas beat interactive e-magazines

Posted: 15 May 2012 09:28 AM PDT

Duncan Edwards, the CEO of Hearst Magazines International, was speaking at The World e-Reading Congress in London today. Offering his take on a number of subjects concerning digital magazines and newspapers, Edwards shared candid words for the iPad and Apple's contributions to mainstreaming e-publications on smartphones and tablets.

Surprisingly, Edwards doesn't think interactive content is the way to go. Instead, consumers are better served with boring digital replicas of static print content, he said.

I'm not sure I agree. Being a print die-hard, Edwards was probably trying to make the case for a single common denominator concerning digital publishing. After all, creating interactive content tailored for the iPad requires focus on excellence and admittedly costs more compared to simply converting print files using Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite, which also received an update at today’s event…(...)

The days are now being counted for the release of pod2g’s iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak, and though the hacker has already been announcing sporadically what device would or would not be supported, he has come up with a formal list.

The good news is that Apple’s most popular devices will all be supported by the untethered jailbreak. The bad news, if you have an older device, you might be out of luck…(...)
