Suddenly, all my devices reject my iCloud password

Message title says it all.

Two days ago, Apple's servers began rejecting my iCloud password to send/retrieve mail. Curiously, I can use the Apple ID and that password to LOG ON to iCloud and use all its other features except mail, but if I try to send or receive mail from my Macs, my iPhone 4s, or my iPad 2, I'm told that the server rejected my password. On the iCloud web interface, if I try to read my iCloud mail online, I'm told there's a "problem" accessing mail.

I transitioned to IMAP and iCloud several months ago, and this is really the first problem I've had after a few initial configuration kinks. I've not tried changing my password (9 characters long, not a word, mixture of upper and lower case alpha and numerals) because it's meaningless to others, seared into my brain, and its also my Apple ID for other purposes.

I wondered if it might be an ISP problem, but I encounter the same issue on my iOS devices and at my office on my laptop (we use a different ISP at work from the one I use at home).

I think this is coincidental, because I don't have any other troubles sending/receiving mail from my home ISP IMAP account, my office Exchange account, and one other Exchange IMAP account I use, EXCEPT that I'm unable to communicate with one other Mac Listserv using my sonic.net address (it's Mac-L). Messages I send to that list and to the Mac-L listmoms from my sonic.net address are also rejected, and that started at the same time.

I have a genius bar appointment this afternoon, but I'm not confident they'll figure this out. All my devices are more than 90 days old, so I can't call Apple without paying a single support fee. Ugh!

Anyone have any ideas of things I might try?

It is probably just coincidence and your ISP not reacting fast enough. It has been happening to me with Comcast. Just go to Mailbox in the Menu Bar and click on "Take all accounts online". If that does not work, quit and restart Mail after you have a connection to the internet.

Since you can log on to iCloud with the same account information, your account has not been hacked. Have you recently received a message to add some security questions to your account? Apple sent a bunch of requests out telling people they had to add security questions to their accounts. I had already done that, so I did not get one.

Either way, go to appleid.apple.com click on "manage your account" on the right. First make sure all the information is correct. Then go into Password and Security and make sure all the info there is correct, and if you feel the need, change your password. Changing your password will cause you to have to take an extra step the next time you log in, on each device.

I wish it were that simple. No matter where I am (at home, where there's a transit through Comcast servers, at work, where we have the best local ISP on the planet, sonic.net, in hospitals where I'm using the hospitals' secure WiFi access points, etc.), EVERY one of my devices became locked out of iCloud mail simultaneously. The most curious part of this is that the credentials DO work to log me in to iCloud, but when I try to send or receive mail using the iCloud web interface, I get a spinning pizza wheel, then a dialog that says there's an unidentified problem with mail and asks me to send a report to Apple. So, it's not a timing issue with the ISP (I've experienced this from time to time).

We'll see what the Genius has to say this afternoon.

The sole contribution of the Genius at the retail Apple Store was to inform me that despite what Apple's iCloud support website seemed to indicate, I would not be charged for a telephone support call. Me: (you already know my response)

He had me try several things that didn't work, such as clearing any entries in my keychain, quitting and restarting Mail several times, logging into the iCloud website to prove that I could do so.

Eventually, he had me change my iCloud password. This worked (sort of); my account went online, my IMAP folders appeared, but they were all empty (and the support person confirmed they no longer contained any data!!!)

I suggested we monitor what was going on with the Connection Doctor and the Activity Window.

Fortunately, my iCloud account is offline on my other devices where I've not assigned the new password yet. I'll archive all those messages before changing the login PW on my Mac Pro.

The one disappointment at the end of all this is that I can't restore my PW to its previous state (can't use one that's been used in the last 12 months).

Ok.

Do you have more than one Apple ID?

Does _both_ the iCloud account and the email account use the full email address or does one use just the username without the domain?

You can check for all the Apple IDs that you may have at the URL below, but you must know the email address last used with the account.

Now, I am just checking the basics. It is unlikely, but has anything changed with your Mail.app settings? And have you checked with your ISP if they are seeing similar issues with other customers? You said you were going through WiFi at work, has anything changed there?

Howdy.

Downloading the Mac OS X 10.7.4 Combo Updater now.

A blurb says that 10.7.4:

"Resolve an issue where the "Reopen windows when logging back in"
setting is always enabled"

Is this the check box reopen windows thing?

Not having to continually uncheck that box would be an excellent return
to status quo anti.

Hi everyone,

Getting out of my usual lurking mode, I have a question that sounds
complex to me, but that you probably will be able to help me with.

What do you suggest as the best method to manage contacts?

My situation:

- I am a journalist. I keep contacts for more than a hundred people who
have either info or expertise. I need to have their information
available and rather secure.

- I have a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad. I sync things with iCloud.

- I am annoyed by the idea of keeping all that info stored in the
standard Apple Address Book, because it mixes up professional contacts
with personal ones, even when properly sorted in lists. I don't like the
idea of a device getting lost and my sources becoming available to some
third party.

- Then, Gmail is great to store contact but I do NOT trust it for
privacy. Google now is obsessed with increasing revenues, at the cost of
their former "don't be evil" policy.

What would be a good, reliable way to store contacts when keeping this
in mind?

All help will be appreciated.

What about a nice Excel spreadsheet or iData database? iData has iPhone and iPad modules as well. It's awfully basic, but it is simple, fast, and it works.

What about using your favorite password vault app? Mine has a way to set categories, just set up one for contacts? I think mine can even dial the phone.

Does anyone know how iData compares with numbers? Is it about the same? easier?
