There are programs in some local jurisdictions to take monitors without fees. Check with your county waste management.

Apple II systems and parts still sell on eBay, at least those in good working condition. Especially complete, clean systems.

I can recycle the stuff right here at our Public Works Department.
I've already dropped off 4 tube TVs there this year. I had been
hoping the computers would be of some value to someone other than what
could be recovered from the disassembled or mashed parts. :-)

For several iterations now, I have given my previous computer to my wife
or one of my granddaughters.
This time, my 5 year old iMac is too obsolete!
Who'd want that, Grandpa?
So, unless my son wants it for a unique keepsake, I'll be heading down
to the PWD myself... Too bad.
Me, I'm getting another 21.5" iMac, with great specs and double my
current RAM, etc., etc.
Plus, it's got an extended SD slot. Plus Wireless keyboard, quad core
processor.
Well, you get the idea. This machine is easily twice, and in some
instances 4X as good as my current 5-year old machine. Time to jump.

Exactly. Heck, my main Mac, an early 2008 MBP, is 4 years old and still does everything I need. My second Mac is a G4 Quicksilver 2002, and is currently dedicated to converting VHS to DVD format, and it does it just fine.

My main Mac is a six-year-old G5 tower. Also, I run an old G4 Quicksilver just for viewing images in Photoshop and playing music in iTunes.
A five-year-old iMac would be perfectly useful for many people. I'll take it, if your just going to dump it. :-)

Hi.
I work with disabled (spinal cord injuries) people. On what they get a month to live on, they can't afford a pc let alone a Mac.
A five year old Mac would be greatly appreciated as a donation.

Sorry. I should have given you the name of the group so you know I'm not a troll. My bad. :/
Spinal Cord Injury Support Group (self-explanatory) in Novi, MI.
These folks are so busy paying for their meds, their co-pay on rehabilitation, and all the basic devices they need, they can't save up for computers. Then they are behind on skills in the job market.
All around, it sucks. Everyone there would rather have legs than sit in a chair all day. These aren't lazy people.
Should I post the phone number on this forum? You can google it.

My son checked in, and it just so happens his Mac Mini ~ roughly the
same age ~ is showing signs of rapidly increasing deterioration. I
promised it to him.
It all works out well...
Thanks for the pointers and suggestions.

I tried Handbreak for three DVD and it has did the job. It did crash once, during the third DVD. Think I need to do separate run on each DVD.

Re: Can´t restore software on old iMac 800 Mhz Power G4 Computer

Howdy.
Bo, your description of the iMac is not exact but if it is an iMac
(Flat Panel) with Model Identifier "PowerMac4,2" then it was introduced
in January 2002 and discontinued in February 2003.
(You can see the Model identifier using System Profiler if it will
boot.)
This model can have up to Mac OS X 10.4.11 installed on it.
A .gz file is a compressed file aka a GNU Zip file.
Stuffit Expander should be able to decompress it.
Stuffit Deluxe is a commercial file decompression and archiving utility
that has been the default for compression on Mac going back many
years.
Stuffit has a free component that anyone can download called Stuffit
Expander. It comes with Stuffit Deluxe if you buy the program but
anyone can download this free part. There is a version for Macintosh
and one for Windows but Windows users always freak out over it. No
idea why.
<http://www.stuffit.com/mac-deluxe. >html
Stuffit Expander can decompress approximately 25 different compressed
file formats like sit, site, gz, zip, tar, and more.
You'll see a Free Expander download button at the link above.

Program and Data Migration Question
Posted by: "LouisD" lou@loudina.com ldina
Tue May 8, 2012 4:54 am (PDT)
A friend of mine has an iMac and wants to buy a new Mac. He has a cloned external backup drive, which is a mirror image of his internal drive, with OS, programs and data.
Having never done this myself, I am wondering what problems he may run into. Will the programs actually run on the new computer? I assume some or all of the purchased software will be "registered" to the old computer (using the CPU ID, motherboard, or something??).
If he has all the software serial numbers, activation codes, etc, will he be able to make all his old stuff work on the new system? How difficult? Any guidance?
Thanks,
Lou Dina

I've done cross-system restores using Migration Assistant and never had an issue. Of course, clean installation of the programs is a better way to go.
