Thank you Archie. That seems to be the best option as one really doesn't know what the roaming charges for navigation may be and I don't want to pay an arm and a leg. However for a prepaid sim just how much data roaming and navigation will they allow. I suppose I shall only know know I get there.

At least in India. once purchased you don't have to pay anything at all ever and everything is updated quite frequently. I am quite satisfied with it.

I just downloaded the Europe sygic for about $65. It doesn't function here though. Shall have to wait to get to Europe.

Data roaming charges are outrageous... Everywhere! Even among providers who have so-called "agreements".

And online maps are data hungry.

So yeah, offline navigation maps (sygic, etc) are the way to go, if you can't / don't want to use local SIM. A bit pricy but nothing compared to roaming charges.

Sanjaya and Vishal, thank you.

The problem with Garmin is they tell you they update the maps, but they have too many errors, are at least 2 years behind, and want you to buy a new map every year. That and they have stupid submissions from users on the maps like peoples homes listed as restaurants, and nicknames on the maps. And I am talking about the 3rd largest city in the state, not some far out rural little town. Major highway intersections and off-ramp, incorrect, two years after the change.

Many Garmins are sold now with lifetime map upgrades (and lifetime traffic) included, for less than their less-capable brethren were sold 3 years ago.

Thanks Archie. I am indeed planning on using a local sim. The only thing is that I don't know just yet how much navigation the "prepaid" versions that they sell to tourists will permit. e. g. I'd bought a local sim on a visit to England and I'd found outgoing calls using it almost as expensive as using my own sim. Of course things have moved on since then as at that time the data roaming and other facilities were not as advanced as they are now.

Of garmin, sygic and google maps ...

Brent, we don't have garmin here and as I said sygic works perfectly. However I've also found that the built in "maps" is almost as good and gives excellent guidance. e. g. it gives you the entire route step by step in the "list" view. Using it, sitting here in india, I was able to plot my entire motoring itinerary: Munich to chiemingsee - hour and a half. Chiemingsee to Graz - four hours etc etc. sygic doesn't do this for you - it can only route you from a current location and not for two remote locations. So the built in maps feature is absolutely invaluable and I presume to go by what has happened since apple came out with its first phone, its inherent facilities are going to get better and better. Siri makes all other horrendously expensive voice recognition software that one purchased not so long ago (e g "dictate 2 u") redundant. I presume that sygic will not be required in the iPhone 5 or 6. The only unfortunate thing, if one wants to view it that way, is that one becomes so completely dependant upon the iPhone - its as though it's a part of oneself and he is incomplete without it. It's perhaps the first step awaiting an electronic connexion to our brains to make us bionic human-beings with computer-enhanced intelligence who, as predicted by Roy kurzweil, will replace and dwarf non-bionic human beings in the not so distant future - but I digress.

4S Search Capability Question Please

Posted by: "Bob Newman" bobnewman@cox.net   agunat

Wed May 30, 2012 2:55 am (PDT)

I have a 4S with ver. 5.1.1 OS. I would like a search that will let me search all fields of any application. For instance if I have a contact where the person's Last Name is Smith and his First Name is Fred he will be pulled up if I search for either Fred or Smith. However if in the Notes field for that Contact it says "my dentist" he will not be pulled up if I search for the word dentist. If it makes any difference Contacts is checked in the Spotlight Search settings. Am I doing something wrong? If not is there an app I can download that will do this?

Thanks in advance... Bob

Dentist was just an example. What if the notes field said "tall guy with short hair" or "he has a degree from Yale". A search feature that searches everything does not seem unreasonable.

I understand your situation. I once wrote "hot chick at the mall" on the notes but later realized it couldn't be searched. So I put it under nickname instead.

You are right, it is not unreasonable to ask to have the Contact Notes included in the search function. But I doubt it will be added soon. Apple can't even perfect the dialing function. On my very old Windows Mobile (6 years old), I can call a person, say Mark, by dialing 6275 (for MARK). A separate dialer app can do that though.

So my guess is there may be a SEPARATE contacts manager app that can do that WITHIN the app itself, not through the native spotlight search. I have ContactsXL and tried it. It can't search contact notes.
