I very recently purchased a MacBook Air, my first Mac. I have watched a few movies from netflix. Last one my computer started making a hissing sound after 5 minutes. I shut window and reloaded the movie, same thing so I turned the computer off, but it happened again and the computer started heating up. I have seen nothing that says not to watch a movie on a MacBookAir?? bad computer? needs to be returned?

I watch every night on a MacBook air. Did you try another movie? Maybe it was something screwy with the Netflix movie. Every night I go to sleep watching movies or tv shows on MacBook air. Most of the time the source is my RAID but occasionally it's from Netflix.

Is it hissing or whooshing?
If it's just the whooshing sound of air, it could be overheating, causing the fan(s?) to activate. Check this article for tips (or search Google for "macbook air fan").

If you indeed hear a higher-pitched hissing sound, it could be failed electronics and you should talk to an Apple Store or Apple tech immediately. But since it keeps happening--and only happens when you play movies--I'd wager this is not the case.

My movies are 1080p at least the non Netfix movies are. I have no idea what the Netflix streaming movies are. My tiny MacBook air sits on my bed so it's air circulation is probably not as good as it would be if I sat it on a book, using that as a hard stand. I've a slight hearing loss but I don't hear any fan noise. Depending on how long it takes me to get to sleep it can play as many as three movies in a row. So far I have not had problems. I have the smallest air they made. Looks like about 11 inch screen. I bought it from my tech a year or so ago. I only just started using it a few months ago simply at night for movies. I don't use it for anything else and only at night when I am ready to go to sleep.guess I'm lucky I never hear a fan. Sure is tiny to hold a fan.

thanks Terry for your reply, good to know that movies work for you. I did try another netflix movie and it had the same result. I will try again this afternoon, if it repeats then will talk to London Drugs where I bought it. Should be able to take it back as I have had it less than 90 days. June
