IPad vs. Kindle etc.?

Can someone please point me to a comparison of the iPad vs. Kindle and
similar devices?
I'll be taking a train ride (3 days each way) and want to be able to read
without lugging lots of books. Not sure whether the train will have wifi
but if I'm somewhere that does, I'd like to be able to check my email.
Apparently some Kindle-like devices have this capability. One question
is which devices can run for 3 days without needing a new charge.
If I get something that can connect to the net, I'd like to be able to
use it at home too. I have used Macs since the 80s but always with a
modem cable (have DSL now) so I'm pretty clueless about wirelessness.
What would I need to be able to use an iPad/whatever?
Recommendations of the best new toy, or any suggestions, would be
welcome. adTHANKSvance!

I have a Kindle and an iPad 2. I would recommend the iPad 2 or the newest iPad hands down.I don't have the Kindle Fire so I can't speak for it. The Kindle though is easier to read outdoors.The iPad has much better clarity inside. But the number of apps and the flexibility is tremendous! Mike

I have a nook Color and an IPad 2 and like both for different reasons. The Nook is lighter and small but would never hold a charge for three days. The color version is harder to read in sunlight. I think the IPad is more versatile and you would discover many new uses/features. Have fun.

People who compare the Kindle Fire to iPad have no idea, they are nothing a
like at all. The kindle does not have a lot of ram or drive space and it
ment to be a Color Ereader with very few apps loaded for fun. The iPad is a
full tablet used for reading, apps, and well EVERYTHING some people use an
iPad instead of a computer

I have a MacBook Air and an iPad3 and the Air is WAY better than the iPad for
anything serious business.

Yeah, and I have a Macbook Pro that's better than the Macbook Air and the iPad but it cost a lot more than the iPad.It really depends on your budget and what you want to do with your computer. Mike

I've got an iPad I. Tonight, spent a few minutes with an acquaintance's Nook color. The Nook's pretty and lighter, and so a better book reader, but the interface was klunky, and it just does Barnes & Noble books. Can't see spending $$ for both. Gadget clutter.
