Tex-Edit Plus and BBEdit will open any file. They can be helpful if you don't know what a file is. BBEdit is especially useful as it will recognize and display a number of file types like XML and plists.

That article doesn't address the issue. But I gather that it's a big question for both programs. I googled "is springpad data encrypted" and "is evernote data encrypted" and there are TONS of found items for both. I think the bottom line is that neither is very well encrypted.

I'll second that. PhotoRec is quick, easy, free and effective.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.
Yes, I back up every night using SuperDuper. Unfortunately, I was extremely tired after a 9-hour drive yesterday, and accidentally trashed ALL my photos from a recent photo shoot, instead of just trashing the "dogs". I emptied the Trash bin too. That was all done BEFORE my system backed up last night. Pure User error. I don't use Time Machine.
I'm still trying to sort of where my trash bin is located and see if the files I deleted are still there. I', not very familiar with Terminal and am trying to find the trash location, then see what is there that can be recovered.
Thanks,
Lou

And they've all gone from your camera/card(s) too?
How do you expect to find them in Trash? The files *are* still there, but
the directory entries have been deleted, which is why you need a recovery
app.
Actually, PhotoRec really is easy. This topic came up a while ago and I
listed instructions. I'll come back with that.

Here's the "proper" download site for TestDisk/PhotoRec.
<http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/ >TestDisk_ Download
This is for a FAT-formatted card, so you will have to change some details.
Otto
----
Step-by-step.
Decide where recovered files will go. Home > Pictures seems the obvious
place.
Connect your memory card reader.
Click or double-click on Applications > TestDisk > PhotoRec. A Terminal
window opens and you are asked to select the media. In my case I get
Disk /dev/disk1 - (size)
Disk /dev/rdisk1 - (size)
The first is selected by default.
Forget the mouse/trackpad while you're using Terminal. Use the arrow keys
to change selections and the <enter> key to action a choice.
Press <enter>. A list of partition table types appears.
Select Intel/PC using the arrow keys and press <enter>. A description of
the drive and partition appears. It is likely to be FAT16 or FAT32. At the
bottom are options Search/Options/File Opt/Quit. The first is selected by
default.
Press <enter> to start file recovery. A choice of file systems appears.
Ensure Other is selected and press <enter>. A choice of Free or Whole
appears. If the drive is not corrupted Free is OK, otherwise select Whole.
Press <enter>. A list of destination folders appears.
Select Pictures and press C.
Recovery starts, showing you the elapsed and estimated times. As files are
recovered, the total for each kind is updated. Note that all types are
recovered, not just image files. Allow this to complete. A summary appears,
giving you the total files recovered and their location.
Press <enter> to Quit, then command-q to quit Terminal.
Look at the recovered files!
If you don't get what you expected, repeat the above but using rdisk1
instead of rdisk.

(You know that in OS X, each volume (drive/partition) has its own Trash
folder)?
If you need something more specific, I'll connect up an external and update
the relevant bits. Is your separate data drive partitioned?

Otto,
My Data HD is a 1 GB internal Sata drive dedicated to data and is not partitioned. I'm totally new to Terminal, so I am not very good at this. I used to do a lot of DOS stuff on PCs, but they are quite different. I managed to get to my Data HD in terminal, but don't see a Trash folder.

I figured out that the Trash file on my Data HD is called ".Trashes" for whatever reason. I was able to navigate to that folder in Terminal, but it tells me that Permission is denied.

I have a couple of different software programs I have used to accomplish
this. One is free program called Senuti
http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ one you have to pay for but if youand
have an iPhone will also allow you
to transfer contacts and SMS messages and is called Phoneview
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phonevie w/.
If you want to use Senuti here is a link that has step by step instructions

Senuti will copy them to your Mac, but only does music.
PhoneView will copy much more to your Mac and is the one I would recommend purchasing. I own and have used both.
Others have also recommend both of these.

I'll jump into the fray to make an observation and suggestion.
I also am using OS 10.4.11 and iPhoto 5.0.4, and I'll say that you can't enlarge the thumbs in iPhoto when using the attachment button in Yahoo mail/Firefox 3.6.28. Things are different in newer systems and what Anna suggests doesn't work either.
When you click on "Attach Files" in Yahoo mail your Finder window opens to allow you to select your attachment(s). You can view your Finder's contents in any of 3 different ways; icon view, list view, or column view. The only way you'll see an enlarged thumbnail is if you have the Finder "view" configured to "Column View". If you'll look at this link I put up, you'll see what is probably your only option. The first view is "list view", which shows a thumbnail that is way to small to see the content. The 2nd example is the column view, which gives you a fairly decent size thumbnail to preview before uploading to your email.

Anna,
That's excellent and I apologise for any misleading claims I might have
made, in particular the Media > Photos option when attaching to Yahoo Mail,
which I hadn't noticed before (I needed to scroll down to see it).
Some of the options you describe are not available to me, though (10.5.8),
and they won't be for Kitty either.
Otto
And that was my point, assuming Kitty, with 10.4.11, will be able to do all of that was a big assumption. You and others are reporting that it will not work in either 10.4 or 10.5.
I find it easier to KISS, Keep It Simple, Sam. Locate it by name and not image.

Windows 7 on iMac

Hi all.
I'd like to install Windows 7 on my new iMac (27" i7 quad-core/Lion) via BootCamp. On looking for a license for Windows to purchase, I became confused as to which Windows 7 I need to buy??
I found one that's called
"Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit (Full) System Builder DVD 1 Pack". Another called "Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade "
and a third called "Microsoft Windows 7 Professional".
All 3 are 3 different prices ranging from $69 to $250.
Might I not even need Professional and just go with Premium Home or just Home edition???
For cryin out loud...how many reasons did I need to stay away from Windows at home all these years...except now I need it.
Any recommendations as to which I need?
Thanks.

Get the System Builder. Any "Upgrade" version is going to require at least
a full installation CD/DVD of an older version if not an installed version.
The system builder versions are usually cheaper / OEM versions that
require that you buy some other small piece of hard ware (a disk driver,
power supply, graphics card, etc) to take advantage of the OEM loop hole of
cheaper OS price....

Main difference between "Home" and "Professional" versions is that the former can't be joined to an Active Directory LAN.
Main difference between "System Builder" and "retail" versions is basically what Bill said, although the license for a system builder version is supposedly tied to the specific piece of hardware for which it was purchased. If you connect to the Internet with your system builder installation, Microsoft will read the MAC (Ethernet Address) that points from your IP to the internet and not allow you to reinstall that licensed version on another computer.
Upgrade versions (either Home or Professional) require you to have a previous version of Windows installed on the computer where you install the new OS (or at least a previous version of the OS for which you hold an upgradable license.

I have both Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional and can't
tell the difference between the two. I'd go with Home Premium if I was
buying a version.....Jim

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I've installed the Paris Metro app on my iPhone 4s and permitted "push" notifications. Heard about traffic congestion in Paris all night :-)
I do have a question. I'm sure I'll figure this out, but once I turned OFF Push notifications the app couldn't find anything (stations, addresses, etc.) Makes me wonder how it will work for anything without a cellular data connection. Any idea whether I'll burn through my bank account if I purchase international data roaming from ATT and be very careful about what apps I allow to receive and transmit data by cellular connection when I'm in Paris?
As for biking in Paris, I did that once (sprinted up the Champs Élysées once the street was closed the morning Lance won his sixth). I wouldn't relish doing it meshed in with Parisian taxi drivers!
