Apple and Samsung release official statements on trial outcome

In case you’ve missed it this afternoon, the jury handed down a verdict in the Apple vs. Samsung trial. Samsung was found guilty of infringing on a number of Apple’s feature and design patents, and has been asked to pay over $1 billion in damages.

Apple, on the other hand, was cleared of all of Samsung’s infringement charges, and won’t be forced to pay any kind of settlement. And now that both companies have had a chance to review the jury’s decisions, they’ve released their statements…(...)

The ongoing legal battle between the world’s two largest phone manufacturers isn’t anything new. For over a year now, both companies have been fighting on the marketplace, but also in the courtroom.

But things have been seriously heating up the last couple weeks with what probably is the most watched trial in the tech world, both Samsung and Apple accusing each other to infringe on their patents.

Apple’s China smartphone share almost cut in half

The wait to release the new iPhone is costing Apple some ground in China. Apple’s 19 percent share of smartphone sales in the country was nearly cut in half to 10 percent in the second quarter, according to research firm IDC. At the same time, Apple once again finds itself competing with Samsung as the South Korean firm led the pack of smarphone sellers with 19 percent of the China market.(...)

Tim Cook hits the one year mark as Apple’s CEO

It was a year ago today that Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple Inc. Feeling unable to fulfill his duties and expectations at the position, he sent a heartfelt resignation letter out to the Apple Community.

In the letter, Jobs recommended that the Board of Directors name Tim Cook as his replacement. Which, as you know, they did. So today, we thought we’d take a look back at Tim’s first year as Apple’s leader…(...)

Amazon expanding video streaming with NBC licensing deal

Amazon Prime, the online bookseller’s answer to Netflix, Friday expanded its licensing arrangement with NBCUniversal, allowing TV programming like “Parks and Recreation,” “Heroes” and “Battlestar Galactica” to be available to subscribers. The news follows the $79 annual service adding past seasons of “Parenthood,” “Friday Night Lights” and “The Starter Wife.”

Amazon’s video content acquisition head Brad Beale described the firm’s investment in Prime as “heavy,” reports the Wall Street Journal. The comment is borne out by the company’s 96% drop second-quarter earnings weighed by increased spending. Along with providing free two-day shipping of items and free Kindle book loans, Prime has offered streaming video since early 2011…(...)

Last week, infamous iOS hacker pod2g released a report regarding a new security flaw he discovered in Apple’s mobile software. The exploit allows for SMS spoofing, and could be used for malicious purposes.

The following day, Apple issued a statement on the texting bug, saying that it was a problem that all manufacturers had to deal with. But according to a new report, that may not be the case…(...)

After speaking with Apple execs, analyst says no TV anytime soon

Even after The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is working with cable providers on a digital set-top box, iTV rumors have continued to swirl. It’s been that way for several months now, despite the fact that there’s zero evidence.

A majority of the speculation has come from analysts, who point to supply chain channel checks and other sources as proof Apple is preparing to enter the TV industry. But after speaking with the company’s top executives, this analyst says that an ATV set is very unlikely in the near future…(...)

Apple serves iPhone 5 mod kit company take down notice

A few days ago we told you about the iPhone 5 mod kit. It’s essentially a backplate for your iPhone 4/4S that’s made to look like the two-tone rear shells believed to belong to Apple’s next-gen handset.

Well either Tim Cook and company don’t like the fact that the mod kit is named after its latest smartphone, or it must look a lot like it, because Apple just served the developers a takedown notice…(...)
