Interesting.

All the external drives I've bought since Macs had Firewire have been Firewire capable drove from OWC, bought specifically because they were Firewire capable, and connected to the computer(s) by Firewire.

Have not seen the problems you describe. Assuming your externals are different than my externals, my guess is the Firewire firmware/chipset chosen by the maker of the external case.

What brand of external case have you been having triuble with?
Do you know from other data that the firewire connector on your computer is okay?

It could be a faulty FW cable. It would be good to know what Rob has tried.
Does the drive have FW400 as well as 800?

Otto
PS this is an example of why I never buy drives/enclosures with only one
connection: if one fails another might work, as it has for Rob.

I've noticed that when I come out of Airplay mirroring, and am returning control of my TV set to the TV, the windows on my MacBook Air have all been squished vertically, and I have to grab the corner and pull them down, or click the green traffic light button in the upper left hand corner. I typically have iTunes, Safari, and Mail open, and they all require this action. Is this normal? Can I prevent it from happening after using Mirroring? Thanks.

This seems to be the same as when you connect an external monitor (or TV)
via a cable: the computer's display is resized to match the TV. I found
that Preferences > Displays > Display > Detect display was the best answer,
and put Displays in the top menu to make this easier.

Perhaps you could see if your display resolution is reset in this way?

Exactly what I have noticed. I did re-download
the app in question (WeathermanLite) and it
worked for about 3 days or so, and now I again
have the red "1" on my dock icon. At least now I
know the reason for that, so thank you for that.
It is definitely a bug on Apple's part. They
should look only at your main drive.

Sure, but then when you remount them won't you get that same problem
all over again?

I believe the Mac App Store uses Spotlight to check for updates. I used to get this problem until I excluded my backup drives from Spotlight searches and now all is well. You don't really need a Spotlight search on a backup, do you?

Excellent point. However, I "knew" I had excluded the externals from
my Spotlight search, but I did double check. Lo and behold they were
not there. Maybe a .plist file got fouled up at one time or another.
With luck this will solve the problem. You are right. No need to
search external drives with Spotlight.

Or at least give you an option in Mac App Store preferences of what drives to scan for apps.

I turned on my mac mini today and all I get is a white screen.

I downloaded Open Office yesterday if that matters and there is a CD with Cub Scout forms inside the computer and I cannot eject it.

I downloaded Open Office from their website and it seemed to work fine.

Help! I am in a panic! It's so bad I am on my husband's PC.
Thank you!

Try booting while holding down the mouse button. That might eject the
CD. I suspect that maybe it is trying to boot from the CD, and since
it won't boot it is hanging there. If my first idea does not work
then hold the option key when you boot. It will eventually give you a
menu of bootable volumes and you can then choose your hard drive and
boot from there.

False alarm! Whew!!! I unplugged all the USB connections and it started up. I one at a time plugged them in and it was card reader I left plugged into my USB hub.

Sorry for the panic attack!

Try shutting it off, then re-starting it with the left mouse button held down.
