Most flatbed scanners include holders for film of various sizes. When you insert the holder, it causes the scanner to direct light from above, and through the film. Look at the specs for whatever scanner to determine what size holders are included.

Flatbed scanners do a +very+ good job of scanning film/transparencies.

BTW, Staples carries several models of Epson scanners at good prices.

Hi Ken,

It seems you use a digital camera and iPhoto and it "just works" so you've
never needed to find out much about it. Firstly, I'll bet your camera uses
JPEG as this is the standard for consumer compact cameras. If you go into
the camera's settings, you'll probably see options for "size" (number of
pixels) and "quality" (degree of JPEG compression) and yours is probably
set to the defaults. Which camera is it? Does it give the number of
megapixels on the camera body?

In iPhoto, you can look at the info for one on your photos and see what
it's "pixel dimensions" are. You can also use Get Info in Finder. This will
give you a feel for the numbers.

If you have the negatives, it's worth scanning those instead of the prints
because the prints have already lost some quality.

I suggest this site as an excellent starter on scanning and digital
imaging. It's quite old now but the basics don't change; in particular it
clears up a lot of confusion about "resolution".

Hi, Otto N. Yes, I just want to turn it on and it works. Interesting about that "get info", I didn't know about that. Yes, my camera does JPEG. It's a 4 megapixel Fujifilm, point and shoot. 2272 X 1704 pixels, around 700KB/picture, it says. I don't know if that's considered good or not, but the quality of pictures is more than adequate in my world, Never liked slides, so I only have prints, dating back to about 1956.I got a digital picture frame last Holiday Day (aka Christmas) and I only want to move pictures from my iPhoto to this frame. No printing or emailing or anything like that. I plan on using a USB thumb drive to move the pix from the computer to the frame. That's about it.

I appreciate all the input from everyone, too.

Can some body suggest a scanner which can batch scan 10-15 6x4 at one time.

Hi Michael,
It's now a "Known Issue" in the Communities Forum: see http://yhoo.it/N75lma

Forrest Leedy f.leedy@comcast.net via yahoogroups.com 10:06 PM (20 hours
ago) to macsupportcent.

I have the same problem, but do not have a solution, however you do not
have to quite mail in order to get the waiting mail.

There is an icon in the mail window that looks like a closed envelop, you
just have to click on that to get your mail. Forrest

Thanks but that doesn't work. Clicking on that icon doesn't do anything.
The exclamation mark next to the inbox won't go away.

Howdy.

A friend in Denver has a Samsung ML-1710 printer which was no longer
supported in OS X when he upgraded to Snow Leopard some time ago on his
MacPro.

He found a fix and sent me this information.

Hopefully others may find these links useful for printers that haven't
had upgraded drivers provided by their makers.

There are 3 freeware items at this site that allowed the Samsung
printer to work:

It looks like it could get an older Samsung printer up to Mac OS X 10.7
Lion.
