Thanks. I should have included the fact that the hold button is stuck and won't slide over. Therefore I can't reset it.

While since I've had a classic, but isn't there a way to rest it with
the lock slider and then press two buttons simultaneously? Might give
that a try.

That's what I did. They tested the battery and there was absolutely nothing. I get a refurbished replacement for $60.

Yup. When the battery is dead, dead, dead, power doesn't flow at all in this type of device. True of laptops as well. If you have a totally dead battery in a laptop, you generally have to remove the battery to get it running on AC power, and only if it's designed to bypass the battery which many aren't.

How did you replace it? Did you just drag the folder from your /Users
directory? I never had it in my dock, but did just try to drag it in.
What happened is that it is a folder, so the OS (I'm on 10.6 Snow
Leopard) turned it into a stack, and so what its icon was was the
first item in the folder, in my case an address book back up file.
I figured that the answer was to make an alias of it (command-L) but
that was grayed out. However, I got your solution: I made an alias on
the desktop, by dragging the home folder with command-option. I then
put that in the dock, and I got the home icon. However, the alias
does have to stay on the desktop (or somewhere) . Once I deleted it
and emptied the trash the dock icon no longer worked. My suggestion
is to do what I did and then hide the new alias out of the way
somewhere. I wonder if that is how you got it in the first place.
Once you can find the hidden home folder alias icon you might be able
to put it in the dock.
