"Velcro is widely used in children's shoes and it allows children to fasten their shoes long before they would ever be able to do so with laces. But this usage frequently continues after a child is ready to tie their own shoes"' says Claude B. Carter, President of alotta.edu, inc.
"I witnessed this in my own family. I watched my nieces and nephews use Velcro long after they were ready to move on. It seemed like a great app idea and we decided to create it," continues Carter.
"We examined all the options available to parents from free online YouTube videos to books available from retail outlets for $20 or more. None of these choices give the child or the parent visuals they can control at each step," continues Carter.
Tie Your Shoes! is designed so a child can work alone or with a parent. It takes full advantage of the iPhone and iPad's remarkable displays and uses eye-popping, high contrast videos to clearly demonstrate the correct movements of the left and right hands. From "Pick up the shoe laces" to the final "Congratulations" each step is clearly demonstrated in its own video clip.
"Our strongest feature is the control we give to parents and children during the learning process. Our app's custom buttons deliver unprecedented control of the step-by-step process. This creates a learning environment that is tailored to each child and it gives each child the ability to focus on those steps that need the most attention. No other app, book or instructional aid replicates this exacting control at every step", says Carter.
To make learning fun for children, Cleetus the Clown narrates the videos and his big, colorful clown shoes fill the screen with easy to follow images. Cleetus also appears in a game section called "The Race" which allows children to race a sneaker around a track to see who can cross the finish line first.
"We saw a tremendous opportunity to make learning fun and easy for children ready to master this life skill", says Carter, noting that more than 300 million children worldwide between the ages of 5 and 9 wear shoes and will at some point need to learn this lesson.
"Our app is a smile generator. That's what you see when a child masters this important life skill," says Carter.

With the app, users track moods, improve habits, manage health, and more. Embraced by the Wauwatosa School District, who purchased 280 copies, the app can also be used in an educational setting to teach students class material on human behavior and research methods.
Nicole Vitrano, AP Psychology teacher at Wauwatosa East High School, was looking for better ways to teach her class material ranging from the biological basis of human behavior to research methods used in social sciences. She found it in a cool app that brings it all together. Vitrano, whose students at first used the lite version, about the Track & Share app: "I loved having students use it to track their sleep and look for correlation between sleep and diet, exercise, mood, and stress."
Vitrano's colleague, Andy Zietlow, AP Psychology teacher at Wauwatosa West Highschool, looks forward to his students using the app in the coming school year.
Zietlow: "Entering and analyzing the data is straightforward. This is a great way for AP Psychology students to get started with hands-on data capture and analyses."
How does the Track & Share app work?
Students use an iPad, iPhone, or iPod to configure their own tracking program on the Track & Share app. Everything can be customized, from labels to icons that come with the different scales. Several life domains are already set up for those who want to start out of the box. The app offers statistics to analyze the data, or students can share data easily via email for discussion and further analyses.
Now available: multi-person upgrade for Special Needs Ed. Track & Share as well as Autism Tracker recently received a new feature that allows teachers to track several children on one device. This feature together with the app's openness for custom set up is especially useful for supporting Individual Education Programs (IEP). Teachers and parents decide which measures and educational goals make sense for each child.
