I have two printers that will print using Apple products.
1. HP 4L connected to a Compaq desktop
2. HP 1102p which is accessed via WIFI on home network.
I can print to the 4L with any windows machine and my iMac. I can no longer print to it with my macbook pro or iOS toys. I suspect that the HP 1102 caused the problem.
The 1102 works great when it works. We can print to it from any iOS gizmo and any other computer in the network. However it is very quirky and I am no longer willing to put up with the aggravation.
Whenever we lose our electric service which is about once or twice a month it can take an hour or two for the 1102 to rejoin the network. Quite often I have to reboot the Compaq computer to bring it back on line which involves a trek to the basement.
Once in a while I get a fatal error indication which is my current situation. Unplugging the printer for 30 seconds as HP suggests does not resolve the issue. Sometimes a few hours will resolve it.
Anyway, I am fed up with this BS.
I want to get a black and white laser printer that will not cost a lot, will be economical to run and will work with Apple and Windows machines without aggravation ( sort of like an electric light, turn it on and forget about it) It also must have AirPrint compatibility, not the HP workaround.
I have mostly been very happy with HP products but I do not want another one for my current situation.
I know there have been discussions about printers before but I could not find them.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Bobby

For a black and white laser printer for the Macintosh, Brother laser printers tend to be the best value available. They are really good performers, with great service and support.
Bother has some very inexpensive models, and I don't recommend them.
But their slightly more up-market models are excellent:

Any of their printers that will take a high-yield 8,000 page toner cartridge is a good choice.
Especially consider:

40ppm
128MB RAM
Postscript emulation
Duplexing

I recently got one of these and it is great. Setup on a wireless/enet LAN OS X and XP was simple. My only regrets is I wish it had 2 paper trays, one for letterhead and one for plain paper.

Brother offers a second, lower, paper tray for your printer.

Hi!
Since upgrading to M/L I haven't had the opportunity to enter an event in Calendar and ask it to send me an email alert. Just today, the occasion arose. Where once I could select (or at least type in) an email address to which to have an alert sent, that is now, seemingly, no longer possible. What I get is the following message, "You must add your own card and email address in Contacts to be able to use mail alerts." Then it conveniently opens Contacts for me.
One should note that I have half a dozen different email addresses in Mail, but I do have an entry for me in Contacts with the email I use for "me" and my address and telephone so that Siri (on my iPhone) at least recognizes "me". How do I tell this pesky Calendar app which of those is my "own" card to use for this purpose? What's up with that?
TIA

I think this has been required for a couple of recent versions of the Mac OS now, but not positive.
You must designate one specific Contacts record as "My Card". It can include a large amount of reference points. My own "My Card", for example, lists 13 different email addresses (some of which have been inactive for years). But unless you explicitly create your "My Card", you will have issues.

You can designate an existing card as "My Card" in Address Book under the Card menu. When "edit" this special card, you will notice that every entry has a check mark beside it. This is how you control the "public" information. If you export as VCF or transfer with an iPhone app, only the checked information will be included.
I've always have trouble remembering how Mail and Calendar decide which email to use as the default on any card, including the My Card. Anyone?

Each of those two capabilities would compete for position # 1 on my list of desires for "Contacts", as the app is now designated in Mountain Lion. However, I cannot make the checkmarks appear when I edit the "My Card" designated entry, whether working on my Mac, my iOS devices (all 6.0.1), or on the iCloud Website.
Perhaps those capabilities were eliminated as part of Apple's dumbing down of features lists?

Running MacPro 1.1 with OS-X 10.68
I really need to clean out my backups as I presently need 628gb for a
full backup which means the HDD needs about 3 times that much for Time Machine.
I would like to be able to tell the software to find and delete all files
which are duplicate in all aspects except being the latest revision. I have
no doubt that I have some files that are minimally represented as being up to
8 or more versions of the same thing.
thanks for any suggestions

I personally have never used a "duplicate finder" application, so I'm hoping others will chime in here.
But if you have, say, 200 GB of old duplicates that are not being accessed presently, then they are not contributing to Time Machine backups presently, since TM only backs up *changed* files.

I like DupeGuru. It's powerful, though not the simplest. It used to be free. Last I checked it was donationware and to be honest, it was too much trouble figuring out how to get through the donation process so I still use the older one. A lesson in creating "low barriers to access" for developers. We consumers are lazy.

So now all my Google calendars are becoming visible in iCal, without asking, a couple times a day.
Backstory: I have a dozen Google Calendars. I originally set these up to sync using the "delegate" function and they all appeared only under the Delegates Sidebar heading. They all behaved just fine, until maybe two months ago.
Then without apparent cause (I changed nothing in iCal), they all appeared under the "Google Accounts" header in the sidebar, where they had not appeared before, creating duplicate appearances. Previously, only the "main" calendar on the account appeared under Google Accounts.
Worse, I can't seem to control the "Google Accounts" view. The listings themselves appear and disappear periodically. When they reappear, all of them are re-selected, which means that a couple times a day, all of my Google Calendars become visible at once without my asking and I have to go deselect them in the Sidebar.
I am afraid to delete my Google Account and re-add it, but I'm beginning to think that this is my next troubleshooting step. This is getting annoying.
MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard. All updates current.
Cheers,
