Howdy and Merry.
Jeannie, I think we need to sort of define something about your
question and issue.
By "disappearing images" do you mean that the Icon for the file becomes
a blank icon? The image in the usual icon goes from a small mirror of
the actual image to blank or something generic?
Mac OS X can be configured to display an icon image and not to display
it and more.
While this may not fix the issue it's a good place to start
troubleshooting it.
Go to a folder with the disappearing icon/image problem.
Then go to View menu and pick Show View Options.
You should see check box options for
Show Icons
Show Icon Preview
Show Preview Column
See what's turned on/checked here.
- - - - -
The issue might also be a corrupt cache file or corrupt preference
file.
Another possibility is that the hidden file that remembers the settings
and options for each individual Finder window/folder might be corrupt.
There is one of these files (hidden) in each Finder window/folder.
This hidden file is named the .DS_Store file. The initial "dot" is
what makes it invisible.
A utility like OnyX can zap .DS_Store files which makes the system
create a new, fresh, default .DS_Store file.
In OnyX, see the Maintenance section > Rebuild tab. There is a check
box named Display of folders' content. Check this and click Execute.
Note this does not delete file you have placed in the folder but just
the invisible file that remembers how you have set the folder to
display (Icon view, List View, Column view, etc.)
Good luck.

in the folder..but when I click on the image, it is visible in preview, and
can be used in ant way I would use a visible one.

Howdy and Merry.
That's the OnyX.
OnyX is a free maintenance and troubleshoot utility. I use it. It can
delete lots and lots and lots of types of cache files and does much
more than that.

My Mac Pro 1,1 running Lion won't start up. The front LED just slowly blinks. I discovered it when trying to wake it from sleep. Nothing works (power off, change battery, etc). No startup bong. Any ideas?

Hold down command-S when you try to boot. If you can get into
single-user mode then that will tell you something. I suspect you
won't though. Disconnect everything but the monitor (of course) and a
USB keyboard. See if it will start then. If it will then some
peripheral is fouling it up.

When you changed the battery did you unplug from wall?
If not try that (5-10 min), sometimes a power blip will confuse the
power supply. I have the same problem occasionally.

Howdy and Merry.
Jim, Barry, and Charles have good suggestions.
A slow blink is supposed to indicate Sleep mode.
I thought Charles' suggestion particularly interesting in light of a
recent problem I had with a variety of TV, set top box, MacPro, and
more in my house after a relay on a circuit board on my range/stove
blew out and I suspect caused issues for things and even for the ones
connect to good UPS battery boxes.
Be sure to read the SMC Reset info that Jim sent. The SMC means System
Management Controller and it has a lot to do with power, energy saver
setting, sleep, fans, and more.

I have a LaCie 2G drive for my Time Machine. It was hanging up the Mac at times, so investigated LaCie and found a firmware update that fixed the problem. The update is "LaCie d2 Quadra firmware updater (1.0.3)" The update includes instructions and the firmware. Worked fine for me. No more hangs!

The last month has brought a lot of connection problems caused by frontiernet. Now, with my MacBookAir I always get a box asking me what network I want to join instead of just automatically joining it. I have the preferences set to automatic. I do not have the problem with my MacBookPro. So, I compared the two for network preferences. The only difference I can find is:
MacBookPro: Airport is connected to frontier8888 and has the IP address 192.168.1.24
MacBookAir: Wi-Fi is connected to frontier8888 and has the IP address 192.168.1.42
Should the two addresses be the same? Can I change the Air to match the pro? Any help would be so appreciated.

They need different IP's to prevent confusion. It's compared to, two
trains, trying to use the same section of track at the same time.
Any help would be so appreciated.

Does anyone know if this external drive connected by Firewire to my iMac needs a firmware update?
I have been to the Seagate site and cannot see any firmware downloads for this HD. Or maybe the downloads are for Windows alone. Sometimes Time Machine sticks as well and I was wondering about any firmware updates.
Most times the Time Machine backup hangs if the firewire connection gets loose, but not always.
