Well, also, there's no reason to get rid of an old working Mac such as this if your current software works for you and that's all you need. In that case, I could see increasing the RAM if it would help it run better. There would no advantage in updating the OS, unless it's for browsing.

If you plan to continue using it with your current software, add RAM. You are being slowed by the 2GB.

You can also increase drive capacity. You can always take the drive out later and move to a cheap external case. No loss.

Upgrade to Leopard if you can find a copy cheap. This will improve your compatibility, but it's not worth the ridiculous price tag. If you don't have a friend with a copy, keep your eyes open for a deal on SnowLeopard with Leopard. My last copy of Snow Leopard was a twofer because you can't upgrade Tiger to Snow without Leopard. If you know an "integrator" ask them if they can do this for you. Some can and will, but it's essentially a "favor." Ask quietly. ;)

If you plan to upgrade software to something current and powerful, don't waste your money. Save up for a used Intel based machine or a Mac Mini.

Cheers,

I am looking for something similar to Win fdisk, preferably free, that
will check my harddrive for physical bad sectors. Maybe there is already
one in Snow Leopard? The hd in the late 2006 core 2 duo i just bought
seems noisy as compared to the totally silent ones i have had on
previous imacs. Should i be concerned? Thanks much!

You should be able to reboot into single user mode and run fdisk from
the command line. I think you need to unmount the drive first.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for this. I've uploaded a file. It's under "Mail icon: trashcan vs. inbox outbox". The screenshot displayed is of an email (from this group) and I accessed it precisely the way you described: Accounts, Gmail (in my case).

This is from my iPhone 4S (Verizon). Interestingly, when I do the same thing on my (ATT) iPad, I see the trashcan. BTW, I'm pretty sure this is a change on the most recent iOS.

What the heck does that in/out box do anyway?

I've only recently started working with OS X Lion, and am using a 15" MAcBook Pro with retina display. My scroll bars have no arrows whatsoever. Is this standard with Lion or is it some sort of anomaly with the retina display's high rez, or a bug or..what.

And speaking of, I had my other Mac so long I've forgotten where it is I can choose to position the scroll bar arrow at each end or to have them both at one end (my preference).

Hi,

The school bar arrows are gone in OS X 10.7 onwards. As far as I am aware there is no way to get them back. Personally, I like the look without them, I think it's a cleaner UI.

They are back in ML - one has option of hiding them.

... And note we are taking about the scroll bar arrows, not the scroll bar itself. For this I am well aware there is a system preference to control when the scroll bar is visible.

TinkerTool is good for various customizations, if it works with the current OS.

No there isn't, not for me at least. Options for the scroll bar itself, but nothing for the scroll arrows.

System Prefs > General

Two sections down, Show scroll bars: Automatically, When scrolling or Always.

You don't need any third party app, you just need to change your settings.

Wish I could help you, but I am lost in your dragging and dropping? Where is all this action taking place? Are you dragging and dropping inside of iPhoto application?

Normally, one "imports" all images into iPhoto. Inside iPhoto, as soon as you import, an Event is created. From within iPhoto, you can drag and drop the event into another event, but that is the only drag and drop action allowed in this database application.

I sync iTunes to the iPhoto Folder/Library. Immediately iTunes recognizes all the events you have created. You choose all, or only a few, of the Events to sync for each device you own: iPad, iPhone, iPod. Forget about syncing individual photos if you sync to iPhoto library. Sync Events.

There is only one database file of your entire library in iPhoto. If you open an iPhoto Library stored image in Photoshop and alter/save the image and close, iPhoto will hide the altered image from you in a hidden folder. This is a database and the original image in iPhoto cannot be altered, nor can anything save to the iPhoto Library without IMPORT. If you want to keep the altered image and it show in iPhoto, Save a Copy to your desktop, and close without saving the original iPhoto image. Then IMPORT the new altered image into iPhoto.

If you want to use an iPhoto image and send it, or play with it, EXPORT to desktop (or some where else).

Forget drag and drop with iPhoto. You are using a database application. A database application will always prevent you from altering an original.

Ack!! No. Go get "Burn". It's open source. Not quite as simple at Toast so you might need to check out some tutorials but it will do what you need for free.

I like NCH, but be wary. They make good, simple programs, and they have bailed me out in a pinch, but most of what they sell can be done either better or cheaper with something else.

Cheers,
tod

P.S. Next time you buy a burner, make sure it comes with a lite version of Toast. That will cover you forever.
