Howdy.

Before switching to Verizon do a bit of research on the differences
between ATT and Verizon cell service.

I think in most cases I get a bit of a faster service via ATT. In
addition, ATT has the ability to talk on the phone while downloading
other things like downloading mail or looking at Google Maps and this
is somethings that last I knew you couldn't do on the Verizon service.

If you have activated cell data on your iPad then this may be something
that works better with ATT service (doing two things at once requiring
cell service). If you don't have the cell option on your iPad then
this is a bit of a non issue.

Thank you. Will give them a call when we get home. Great relief.

Howdy and Happy.

Yes. Screen can be replaced but it may depend on whether the damage is
also to the surface that the glass has to adhere to.

I just helped a neighbor kind replace a screen on an iPhone 4 at a
local mall. Same kiosk replaces iPad screens while you wait.

I didn't price a replacement iPad screen but the cost for an iPhone 4
was a total of $80 USD and took 20 minutes.

Does Tiger support 3TB?

Does G5 support 3TB?

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP96
See storage towards bottom of page ..... says 500 gig max.

Howdy and Happy.

When you use Disk Utility to reformat the new 3 TB hard drive you will
have some options for what kind of format is done.

The different types of format make a difference on systems that will be
installed.

One format type is for PowerPC Macs such as a G5.

Another type of format is for Intel Macs that WILL have an OS installed
on it.

READ: >>>>The instructions below were composed with me looking at my
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Disk Utility on an Intel based Macintosh and what
you see on a PowerPC based Mac running Tiger will be different but I
hope this aims you at the right direction.

If my info doesn't work well for you, hopefully another respondent here
with easier access to a Tiger machine might be able to do a list of
steps. <<<<<<<<

You should try to use Disk Utility and then pick the drive (select it)
and NOT pick the volume.

The volume is the 2nd line for each HD that is indented.

With the HD selected, next click the Partition tab.

After selecting Partition, look at the item named Partition Layout and
the popup under that should say "Current."

Change the Current to 1 Partition.

When you change to 1 Partition note the Options button beneath the
Partition Layout window pane. It should become black and available to
use.

Click the Options button and a dialog should drop down with Partition
choices.

The one named Apple Partition Map is what you would need to use IF you
want to install an OS on the drive for a PowerPC type of computer.

One respondent mentioned "Large Drive Support."

Your G5 running Tiger supports large hard drives. A "large hard drive"
means anything over 128 MB in capacity.

Here's an article that discusses large hard drive support and when it
was introduced, and different Mac models.

No solutions, but at least I'll try to keep the conversation going. The "?" icon means your boot drive is no longer bootable. I don't know why. The fact that, when you insert your install DVD-ROM (or perhaps back then it may have been a CD-ROM), you can SEE the files on the MacBook's internal drive suggests the drive isn't mechanically damaged. Your problem, of course, includes the fact that you have no good way of restoring or repairing the operating system that's now on the drive (Snow Leopard), and finding a generic (not machine-specific) retail Snow Leopard install DVD-ROM will be quite difficult (but not impossible).

If you have an Apple Retail Store available, I'd start with a trip to the Genius Bar. If it's one of the 2006 models, it's "vintage" and they may not be obligated to provide support, but they're usually pretty good at trying to sort out what's wrong anyway. At best, they may help you obtain a retail snow leopard installer disk...

Quoting myself there, Barbara, but I hope you're still reading.

Catching up on the forum I see that somehow you'd posted 3 times, so everything I said had been said by others as well. A few elements of their offerings seemed surprisingly off base, however:

It's very unlikely your drive is mechanically "bad" if you can see all your files when booted from a "good" OS DVD ROM; e.g., the Tiger startup running Disk Utility or the DiskWarrior DVD.

One suggestion involved trying to find a good Tiger Install disk and reinstalling the Tiger OS. I myself wouldn't do that if I'd gotten used to Snow Leopard, which was on your drive previously. Indeed, I don't even KNOW if one can revert to an eariier OS within the same user account, but if you'd installed any software that took advantage of Snow Leopard features (such as Apple's own programs), you'd be sorely disappointed by the results even if you could.

I hope it all works out, and since you were willing to spend $100 to get it fixed, I'd spend another $50 to get an external drive big enough to partition for Time Machine and either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! so that the next time (and there WILL be a next time) something goes wrong, you won't be out of luck.

If your budget is a bit bigger, get two SEPARATE external drives, one for Time Machine, the other for making scheduled whole-disk clones of your internal drive.
