> Is there nothing I can do on my own to solve the problem or do I need to take it in to a professional?

You COULD get these symptoms from having something buggered in the computer that prevents the drive from being seen (possibly something as benign as having the SATA connector having worked itself loose).

You COULD get these symptoms from having some corruption on the drive that prevents it from booting.

You COULD get these symptoms from the drive having died.

There are different approaches for treating each problem, so the first thing to diagnostic testing.

1. Can it boot from another source -- an install DVD, another internal drive, an external drive....

2. If you can boot from SOMEthing, look on the desktop, and in Disk Utility, to see if the "dead" drive is visible to the booted system.

3. If it is visible, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk on the "dead" drive.

4. Next step might be to run System Preferences -- Startup Disk to see if the repaired disk is seen as bootable.

I finally decided to take it to someone who works on Mac's. He's a retired authorized Mac repair person, so he knows what he's doing. Evidently my files are still there and the HD is okay, except for the fact that some of the OS is missing. He is going to move my files off, install a new OS, then move my stuff back on. For $100 it will be as good as new or maybe even a little better :-)

I want to thank everyone for all of your input. It feels good to know all of you are out there and you are always willing to help those of us who know far less about computers.

I don't really like to clone drives with or after a problem like this. Because you might not have fixed the issue, and you move the issue over with the clone. The same reason I don't like Migration Assistant.

With the last couple upgrades of OS X, unless you buy a new Mac, you bring over a lot of the old artifacts, like MobileMe in System Prefs.

I prefer to install a new clean OS and then move over my stuff, without any old issues and old junk from the prior OS.

Cloning and MA are great if things are working fine, but if there is a problem, why chance moving it over? Besides Barbara had mentioned that she might sell the MacBook. Not to mention that she does not seem to have a backup of the data, or she would not be too worried about retrieving the data.

It's possible that DW has fixed the problem. You still should have a backup on another HD, though, if you don't already. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC), other similar duplicating app, Time Machine, or you can manually drag (not the best option.)

I need your help.

I have a IPAD 3 64 Gig 4G.

I purchased it about 3 months ago. In the upper left hand corner I am getting a "NO SIM" and I am not able to connect to be 4 G service (AT&T) I reset my network settings and when that didnt work I reset all my settings and that didnt work.

I called Apple and they said my SIM card might have went bad and couldnt help me.

Can someone please help me.

Have you tried ejecting the SIM (on the side there is a slot and tiny hole
- poke a paper clip or sim ejector tool (fancy paperclip) in there and make
sure SIM is seated properly and push back in.

Take it to your carrier and complain of a non-working SIM.

The SIM is the card that provides all of that information if it says "NO
SIM" and your SIM is inserted properly then you are going to have to go to
an AT&T store and have them give you a new SIM card...

I have a cell phone that sometimes gives me that notice. I turn it
off and then back on again. I presume you do know how to fully turn
off the iPad. Another thing might be to remove the SIM card and
reseat it.
If Apple can't help you (or more likely refuses to help you) then
contact MaBell. It is their service, after all.

Certainly, but you'd need a different iPad, since the two companies
use different systems.
Also, if you have a contract to fulfill that is another problem.
