And that still doesn't enable the actual Up/Down arrows as was asked.

No. As I have said a few times now, that just controls when the schroll bars themselves are shown, not the schroll bar ARROWS, which is what the OP was asking about. As far as I know, there is (non third party) option to turn these back on in Lion onwards.

As long as we're offering an opinion, mine is that I think "cleaner look" has to be subordinate to functionality. Arrows allow *incremental* (precise, pre-defined) movement of the window contents. Abandoning them means more time spent trying to see all of (but no more than) the next page's contents by trial and error movement of the mouse on the slider.

Most people will think of up-and-down scrolling and would argue that the spacebar, for example, does next-page scrolling. Or Page Up/Page Down. But I work with software where left-right page contents are important, and the arrows help that go quicker.

IS this something that could be returned via third-party software and has anyone?

Hi,

I guess with the multi-touch API, which provides alternative ways of
doing what you describe below, and which Apple is clearly pushing, they
feel the arrows are now redundant and have just removed them, which they
have never been scared of doing. Personally I have never needed to use
the arrows, so personally I agree with them.

As I don't particularly mourn their passing, I haven't exactly invested
much effort in seeing if there is a way to add them back, but a quick
web search suggests to me you might be out of luck, even with some third
party add on.

I am confused. On the new iTunes 11.0.1, how do you update apps or put apps back on my ipod?

Thanks!
Carrie

(Of course you have backups before doing any of this.)

Choose your "main" library and simply add the others to it. Identifying and
removing duplicates is never easy or quick but it should be possible to
speed things up by looking at Events which by default are date-based.

All hard drives in modern personal computers automatically check for bad blocks and automatically map them out on the fly. There is no need for you to do anything, or to use anything, to map out bad blocks.

A hard drive that is noisy is a very bad sign. It usually indicates one of two things. Either that the fan is failing, which means that the drive is likely to overheat and fail eventually, or that the hard drive's armature is smacking against its stop as it tries to read from a bad sector on the drive that can't be fixed. This causes what is known as "the click of death." This too means that your hard drive is about to fail.

Here is a movie showing what is happening:
http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/clicking-hard-disk-fault.MOV

You can run a disk utility to repair the drive's directory (e.g. fsck or Disk Warrior), which may keep it running longer, but if your drive has physical damage that can't be automatically fixed, it is only a matter of time before it is toast.

You should back up your drive to another drive immediately and from then on not trust it with data that you want to keep.

Good to know. Still would be nice to see visually whether there are bad sectors, and if they are becoming more widespread.

According to iStatPro my hard drive temp and speed is similar to the older core duo i am replacing. I assume then, if anything, the fault lies with the hd itself. Or maybe i am making too much of the noise. It isn't as bad as, say, the old Quantum PC drives i used to have. Some of those would rattle on for years. It's just that i am used to total silence from my imacs.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my Core Duo to this Core 2 Duo, but then wiped the original drive clean (trying to install Ubuntu for giggles but the failing board and/or video that caused this upgrade in the first place seems to have worsened to the point that i can no longer install an OS. If i set that (bigger and silent) drive up in an external usb enclosure on my newer machine, can i transfer everything that way via Migration Assistant? Or should i replace the drive then use this failing one as an external usb and use Migration Assistant that way? (I have retail Snow Leopard cd).

Thanks much!

Too much work if more than just a few photos.

Am I the only one who considers it odd that the user can't choose non-contiguous groups of photos to sync?

Dave,
You can create folders within IPhoto, and copy the desired pics to them. You can have iTunes sync any or all of those folders.

iTunes sync's to EVENTS in iPhoto, or to any picture folder on your HD, but you are correct it will not sync individual photos. Do I think it is odd? I'd rather sync my chosen folders of photos rather than hundreds/thousands of individual clicks, but I don't know why it isn't programmed that way. jr

For whatever reason YAHOO is dropping quote tags tonite, makes it hard to read and comment if I don't know what is quoted and what isn't. Gag.

I'm getting an pop-up window showing "Copy Job.app" stating that the "Application isn't running." and when I click the OK button nothing happens. The only way I can close the window is by logging out and then logging back in. Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

I'm a lifelong Mac user.
A couple months ago the display on my MacBook Pro (MacBookPro4,1) started failing. Started with occasional vertical lines and now they're always there. Typing on it now, it's difficult to read what I'm typing (so please excuse any errors).
Other than this problem, it's working great.
Does anyone know of a place/person I could get a replacement display from that won't cost me over $200?? The actual value of the laptop isn't over $150 so obviously, it isn't worth it to spend the $$$$$ to send it out to be replaced. I figure if I can get a replacement display for a decent cost, I'll do it myself.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Jeff
