Shaderific version 2.5 is available on the App Store now. Shaderific is an educational app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch that helps computer science students and experienced developers to get started with OpenGL ES 2.0 shader development. The app makes it possible to write, compile and test shader programs directly on any iOS device without ever touching a laptop or desktop computer. Version 2.5 adds particle systems, full screen and multitouch support.
Hamburg, Germany - Gryphos GmbH has released Shaderific version 2.5, a significant update of its OpenGL ES 2.0 shader development application for iOS. Shaderific provides the full range of shader development with the OpenGL Shading Language (GLSL) on tablet computers and mobile devices. Vertex and fragment shader code can be created, edited and compiled on the device and all changes are visible instantly. There is no need to use a personal computer (laptop or desktop) in the shader development process anymore.
The update adds support for particle systems with spherical and cubic shape. The number of particles (particle density) can be changed in a range of 1,000 to 100,000 particles without interrupting the rendering loop. The added multitouch support provides shader programs with access to a new uniform array containing the screen coordinates of the respective touches. Furthermore, shader programs can now make use of the whole screen real estate by using full screen mode. This can be very useful to prototype image processing shaders (e.g. texture blending). To really make the whole screen visible and accessible the menu and status bar can be hidden with a double tap on the screen. The new functionality is demonstrated by four new example shader programs included in the update.
Starting shader development can be a difficult and complex task for a beginner. Shaderific smoothes the learning experience dramatically by hiding away a lot of the technical complexity, that way letting the user focus solely on the shaders. 22 built-in shaders are demonstrating fundamental development techniques ranging from basic coloring and lighting shaders to advanced texture shaders with normal and environment mapping. The user can start to experiment with these shaders right away without writing a line of code. Alternatively, shader, object and texture files can be imported via Dropbox to give a maximum of flexibility in creating new custom shaders.
Shaderific streamlines the process of prototyping, testing and debugging shaders immensely by cutting the cord to the personal computer. Whereas traditional shader development requires compilation of the whole graphics application for every change to a shader file, all this is unnecessary now. Since the shaders are edited and compiled right on the iPad, iPhone or iPod no file transfer is needed with a personal computer and a lot of time can be saved. A further strength of Shaderific lies in the possibility to change parameters (uniforms) of the shaders via the settings menu without interrupting the rendering loop. All changes can be examined in real-time and fine-tuning the rendering result is fast and easy.

Math meets Art: Ornament World Exhibition goes public beta - Published on 12/19/12

With the release of Version 1.3 the creative iOS drawing App iOrnament invited for submissions to an "Ornament World Exhibition". Now, six weeks later several hundred entries from all over the world have arrived and a first selection is published on www.science-to-touch.com. These artistic, intricate and highly symmetric patterns are accessible trough an interactive javascript based viewer that now entered the public beta state.
Munich, Germany - The iOS app iOrnament is a drawing app for creating intricate ornamental designs. Based on the mathematical theory of symmetry groups it accepts hand drawn user input and converts it into stunning symmetric patterns. Over the last few months iOrnament gained increasing popularity reflected by many enthusiastic reviews and a 4.8 star average based on worldwide roughly 300 ratings.
Motivated by the broad and international user base of the creative drawing app independent developer and math professor Jurgen Richter-Gebert, invited for submissions for an "Ornament World Exhibition". All users of iOrnament have the chance to submit their designs and patterns for being showcased publicly on the internet. Meanwhile several hundred designs were submitted and a first selection of them is now available on the science-to-touch homepage in the public beta version of an interactive viewer.
"The resonance is overwhelming, some of the submission by far exceed my expectations of what would be possible with the program", says Richter-Gebert. The submissions visible in the exhibition currently come from 12 countries. Among the contributors are graphical designers, art teachers, mathematicians and many other users of all ages. The variety of submissions ranges from highly esthetic ornamental patterns via replicas if of classical cultural designs through funny cartoon like drawings. In the viewer the designs can be selected by various categories or tags. They can be freely zoomed and rotated.
Creating ornamental patterns as a creative experience is best expressed by the statement of Peter Chilvers co-creator of the well known generative art and music app Bloom. In a review on his British iOS app review site Unworldly.com he writes "[Using iOrnament] felt similar to the way it feels when improvising music or building up a rhythm in a sequencer. Unexpected strands keep popping up, and the joy is in following them and seeing where they lead." Much of these creative processes can be seen in the ornaments of the world exhibition. Submissions to the exhibition can be made through the full version of iOrnament which is available on the Apple app store. The most interesting submissions will also be presented on iOrnaments facebook page.

"If you boil it down to the basics, social sharing has made huge leaps and bounds over the past decade, said ClipClock PR manager Jacqueline Lage. "The evolution process of social sharing went into hyper speed around the turn of the century, and we're very proud to be on the forefront with our app."
The infographic begins with prehistoric cave paintings, evolves to Greek runners, messenger pigeons, town criers, radio transmissions, and eventual concludes with social media technology. ClipClock believes that the infographic grants keen insight on how quickly technology has sped up social sharing evolution in comparison to previous forms of sharing.
"The human race went from small steps to giant leaps in social sharing evolution once social media technology got on board," said Lage. "If look at the whole timeline in one piece, it pretty amazing."

A word from the publisher/curator: While we typically don't relate or mention the latest world news in our quarterly magazine, we felt that what is happening in Syria warrants some special attention. In solidarity with the civilian population there we prepared a special interactive feature juxtaposing photos that we feel are quite symbolic of this terrible, ongoing struggle.
In the same vein-the cover for issue 5-a photograph by Daniel Lohmann is also quite fitting. Taken in Damascus, a photo of the Syrian president looks faded and almost like an historical relic. Additional photos in Daniel's portfolio are also featured in this issue and show his focus on sociological and architectural photography.
As we always try to do in our magazine the subjects and the images are wide ranging yet subtle in their approach. We enjoyed finding the work of Bridget Collins with her whimsical take on objects around her; Simon Kossoff's bold images of our surroundings and Ryuji Sakamoto's beautiful poetic view of modern Japan. All of that and more is now available for you to enjoy and explore in this latest issue.
