I have been setting up my laptop and eventaully will probably shove the
desktop into a closet. I wish to get iTunes 11.0.1 set up with the same
content. I thought connecting the iPod to the laptop would make this
happen but iTunes seems not to want this. What is the process to do
this? Thanks.

I recently upgraded laptops. I first had to backup to DVD my content (through iTunes). I then through iTunes, deauthorized that computer. Authorized the new computer, restored content.

If you have no purchased content, then just treat it as a new device.
