Short answer:

When you turn off Notes under the Mail settings you stop the "mail to
me" behavior. But any notes that were created since the last(?) sync
are lost. A truly un-friendly behavior...

You might find it cheaper to buy an AT&T dongle and SIM than tethering, than tethering to an iPhone.

I can sell you one that I purchased but never used. You would have to go to AT&T and get a SIM card though. Contact me off-list if you are interested.

Hey Jim,

I've a 4G iPad. Will jailbreaking let me tether it?

I presume you mean a 3rd-generation ("new") iPad.
If it's Verizon, yes, WITHOUT jail-breaking.
AT&T, no, at least not *yet*, without JB.

As for jail-breaking, I wouldn't know.
Or even whether it is possible to JB an iPad3 yet.

When I tried Delicious the iSight scanning was clunky at best, and the Amazon searching was inadequate. Things may have improved. I am not willing to enter info manually if I don't have to.

I am distinguishing between apps like Delicious and LibraryThing, which store information about objects, but not the objects themselves. A "media database" contains the objects themselves, like iTunes and iPhoto.

There are no "cheap" media databases that are at all comprehensive. iTunes can handle some video, but only in limited end-user formats. Ditto most other apps until you get to the pro level (Adobe Bridge, Portfolio, CatDV, etc...).

If you happen to have FileMaker, you can build one yourself, but it's not easy.

Harry,

Thank you very much for your recommendation. But … would you say Plex is "a good software"?

Here is my experience with Plex so far:

1) Plex and Plex Media Server must run simultaneously.

2) When we enter the Plex display screen mood the mouse and the trackpad are disabled. This means Plex is not compatible with Little Snitch; LS has to be disabled when Plex is running otherwise there is no way to allow or deny the upcoming connection requests from LS.

3) I found no way to enter (meta)data (directors, genres, etc.)

4) Got stuck several times; had to Force Quit several times.

Did I miss something?

All my movies are rips. Some are from YouTube (hard to find black and white movies from the 40ies and 50ies), others more recent ones from various download services. The format is nearly always .flv and .avi. Sometimes .wmv That means, all are incompatible with iTunes. Converting them to a compatible iTunes format is not an option; that would require many months of tedious work. Besides iTunes does not have any genuine data fields for movies (only 8 fields: name, artist, album artist, album, grouping, composer, genre).

Until now I have organized my movie collection with the Finder which offers very limited options. Here is what I have done so far:

I download the movie; if it is good and I want to keep it
I create a folder and give it the original name of the move (when first downloaded the movies usually have cryptic names such as syxf_r930, etc.)
Then I place the folder into a corresponding genre folder (comedies, drama, etc.) which in turn is located inside a country folder for movies (thus English movies are not in the same folder as US American movies, for example)

I could perhaps use Path Finder (http://www.cocoatech.com/pathfinder/) or Punakea (http://www.nudgenudge.eu/) to tag the movies but I don't know if metadata such as the names of the director and actors can be attached to the file so that they can be found in Spotlight, other than using the Spotlight Comments field which comes up when you select a file in Finder and then press command + I to bring up Get Info.

Seems to be also a social network for book enthusiasts. What about MovieThing.org?
:-)

You use it for movies?

If I'm not seriously mistaken you can't use CDFinder (now called NeoFinder) for this sort of things. I use it for cataloging my CDs. I just tested a movie DVD right now and all I got was the name of the film and then a kilometer long list of file names, like this:

VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_05_0.BUP
VTS_05_0.IFO
VTS_05_0.VOB
VTS_05_1.VOB
VTS_06_0.BUP
VTS_06_0.IFO
VTS_06_0.VOB
VTS_06_1.VOB
VTS_06_2.VOB
VTS_07_0.BUP
VTS_07_0.IFO
VTS_07_0.VOB
VTS_07_1.VOB
VTS_08_0.BUP
VTS_08_0.IFO
VTS_08_1.VOB
....

Thanks Michael. By me it downloads infos from Amazon; very fast and useful.

Are the data from Library of Congress relevant to movies? Or only for books?

OK, verdict is that one can no longer manually drag music files onto the iPhone through iTunes and expect all covers to show in Cover Flow. The new 5.1 software prevents this. The music files are there but not all cover images in Cover Flow will show having been drug manually to the iPhone. Wierd, huh? Apple charged me $31 to find out, so now you have it free.

¥ Go to iTunes/Advanced/Get Album Artwork. Even if you have added cover artwork of your own through Apple+I and paste, in iTunes go to Advanced/Get Album Artwork.
¥ Then trash all the music files on the iPhone.
¥ Create a PLAYLIST in iTunes.
¥ Sync the iphone music to this list. It will take awhile to load all the music files again.

All covers will now show in Cover Flow.
