Free Press launches AT&T petition site over FaceTime rules Posted: 19 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Last week, AT&T announced that it was going to be opening up FaceTime over cellular to all tiered data plans. This is the latest in a string of policy changes made by the carrier to appease the Net Neutrality groups. But it doesn’t look like the groups were very impressed. In response to AT&T’s decision to continue to exclude the feature from those on grandfathered unlimited data plans, the Free Press has setup a petition site…(...) Opera Ice: a new WebKit-based mobile web browser Posted: 19 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST In a move to stay relevant in the mobile space, Opera will be unveiling an all-new web browser for Android and iOS next month. The client will be based on WebKit, and will focus on hiding the technology as much as possible, while embracing rich applications. Of course, Opera already has a browser on iOS. But this new one, dubbed ‘Opera Ice,’ will be much different. Like a lot of apps these days, Ice’s UI is button-less, and all major functions are controlled by gestures. We’ve got a video of it in action after the fold…(...) "Opera Ice: a new WebKit-based mobile web browser" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
Creating creative lens flare with your iPhone Posted: 19 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST Welcome back to iDownloadBlog’s lessons in iPhone photography. The last couple of lessons we have been exploring a the basics of photography (iPhone or otherwise). We learned about exposure, white balance, and white balance locking. Because we have covered the basics, I thought it would be fun to explore a more radical facets of iPhone photography: lens flare! For years, photographers have come up with all sorts of ingenious ways to reduce that distracting little ball of light that appears in your photos when you point your camera at something bright. Very expensive lenses are measured by their ability to combat against this. You can easily pay $2,000 or more for glass that is lens flare resistant. Personally, it has never really bothered me. I kind of dig it. So much so, I seek it out. So in today’s lesson I thought it would be fun to show you how to achieve it as well as enhance it using the new app Light Camera App – Mark I…(...) Steve Jobs’ house burglar gets 7-year sentence Posted: 19 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST Remember when someone broke into Steve Jobs’ home last summer and stole over $60,000 worth of computers and stuff? Well that somebody ended up getting caught (believe it or not, Steve’s iPad did him in), was found guilty, and just received his jail sentence. Kariem McFarlin has just been sentenced to seven years in a California state prison for the robbery, as well as a string of other burglaries in the Bay Area. The 35 year-old was arrested in August of last year, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen property…(...) ‘Bolt’ hides the battery from the status bar, displays simple logo while charging Posted: 19 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST You might have noticed that it is uncharacteristically redundant of Apple to have the accurate battery percentage meter beside a graphical representation of the remaining battery life. The interface only needs one or the other, though it’s still good to have an indicator on whether the power cord is connected. Personally, my preference is to stick with the percentage meter and ax the logo. Bolt is an old jailbreak tweak that we neglected to feature when it debuted in 2011. The tweak is a relatively simple MobileSubstrate hack that removes the space-hogging battery icon from the Status Bar, but still displays a small lightning bolt icon while your device is charging…(...) Pod2g and planetbeing make progress on iOS 6 jailbreak Posted: 19 Jan 2013 04:38 AM PST So here’s something we haven’t heard in a while: good news on the jailbreak front. It looks like now that pod2g has completed his first iOS app, entitled podDJ, the security expert has turned his attention to hacking iOS 6. His return alone is great news, since it seems like he’s been gone from the community forever. But to add to the excitement, the hacker just announced that he and planetbeing recently discovered two new vulnerabilities…(...) Bump update allows for swapping Dropbox files Posted: 19 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST Bump recently received an update to version 3.5.3, which adds support for sharing Dropbox files. Dropbox support is a long time coming, considering it’s been a popular service for storing and sharing files in the cloud since 2008. All you need to do is open Bump, swipe to the button for sharing Dropbox files, and link your Dropbox account to the app. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to send Dropbox file links to friends with a bump of your phone…(...) How to create “blank” icons on the Home screen without jailbreaking Posted: 18 Jan 2013 08:08 PM PST The fact that we’ve been unable to jailbreak the iPhone 5 thus far means that it’s difficult to customize the iPhone like we want to, but that doesn’t mean that it’s totally impossible. As we’ve seen over the past few months, a new category of tweak has emerged — the non-jailbreak tweak. These are tweaks and hacks that one can use to customize their iPhone without a jailbreak. No, it’s not nearly as good as actually having root access to iOS, but it’s a nice holdover until some enterprising group or individual blesses us with a proper iPhone 5 jailbreak. One of the latest non-jailbreak tweaks that we’ve been able to test out, is one that allows you to place “blank” app icons on the iPhone’s Home screen. This effectively allows you to simulate the ability to rearrange app icons in any preference desired. It’s not perfect, but it may prove to be satisfactory to you until we have a better means of customization. Take a look past the break for our full in-depth video tutorial.(...)
