Thank you Brent.

Yes I'm asking for help.

I stated in my message that I had removed *all* log-in items and the problem still persists for this one user.

But *something* that is loading for this user must be causing the problem...

Ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

I missed that you tried removing all and it did not work. Then it is not a log-in-item.

What format file are you trying to listen to with QuickLook?

I don't think it is a log-in item. Can QuickLook play that format of audio file? Do you have and can QL access the proper codex to play the file?

QL is not intended as a universal audio player, it is a app that gives you quick access to files, only.

Another user on this mini was created and no custom installs or add-ons (no codexes added, etc.) were added/installed. This user can Quick Look play mp3 files. That tells me that no additional codecs are needed to play mp3 files.

My main user (the one I created when I first installed the OS) cannot play these same files.

Something is keeping QL from working for the main user...

There used to be a weird bug which caused audio to stop playing. It was to
do with Audio MIDI Setup but the fix was to run Garage Band and then close
it (without doing anything else). Worth a try?

Hello,

I can use Activity Monitor to get the parent process, PID and various other
information.

Is there a good source of up to date information on the most likely
processes listed in the Activity Monitor. Also, Frameworks. Not just the
running information, but the purpose of the process ["it controls the
printing",....].

Examples: rpc.geo, rpc.net and their frameworks.

I have been searching the developer site but there does not seem to be a
document with all the information collated. Searching the developer site is
not very user friendly. Perhaps I do not have the "search secret sauce".

Otto, you may be on to the solution...

I ran GB and got an error message saying that there is no valid Instrument Library folder in the system Library folder and to reinstall GB.

I remember deleting all things related to GB (in the original Snow Leopard install last year) as I never use it. Maybe the OS relies on some files in that folder?

I'm a bit surprised that GB & Library items were not installed during one of the subsequent (three?) SL installs I have done in the past year.

In any case I'll re-install GB from the SL Install Disc.

Thanks, and I'll keep y'all posted...

Dave

PS: doesn't a replace install ALL applications & system files? I always presumed this...

You might want to try the other path and run Audio MIDI Setup and play with
the settings there.

A couple of questions.

Who's Kramer?

Why do we care about his (?) daughter's frustration?

What does does his biographer know about how Apple is _now_ run?

No pile on.

Kramer will not add positions in Apple until he hears of a new OMG announcement. He doesn't care about a cheaper iPhone, growth-wise. He is concerned about Apple flubs w the new iTunes11 which many, including myself, hate, plus the Maps fiasco, and the new plug for the iPhone 5 for a premium priced product. His daughter's frustrated attitude w Apple gave him pause.

Yeah, I know, start the pile on. Just saying, as I have always said, Apple only has innovation as a product, like all techs. When that stops (the author of Jobs' bio says it has stopped at Apple) it gives pause to think. I hope there will be an OMG we don't know about, of course.

But I've been a Mac user for 20+ years and will continue to be as long as the quality is there as it has been and my iPhone4 continues to please.

I think we need to get back on topic. This group is all about helping Mac
and iOS users and *not* about the management of Apple.
