How cheap do you mean? You could upgrade for about $350 to the current
version with all its new capabilities, or stay with the G4, which can't
run OSX Leopard 10.5; also Quark 7 is not compatible with (IIRC).
I ran into that with my MDD shiny G4 tower. Then when someone gives you
a Quark 8 or 8.5 file, you may not be able to open those either....

You could also try to find a legitimate copy of version 8 or 8.5 and
have that registration officially transferred to your name (by Quark)
... That would run up to Snow Leopard but you already indicated that you
are on Lion. Quark 8.5 will run on Lion, but there have been document
hiccups - search Google, there are lots of notes on working and
non-working issues.

My kid has my old G4 so if I really need Quark, I get on his computer.

I was curious, though. I no longer work in the printing industry, but occasionally I need a program like Quark. What is today's equivalent to Quark and what is an affordable substitute for today's equivalent?

Thanks,
Carrie

I'm really behind the times, but am getting ready to get Creative Suite (I can get it really cheap with an educator's discount) so will have InDesign. Since I know zilch about InDesign, I was interested in reading below that Quark files can be opened in it. Does it convert correctly or will there be problems?

Pet portrait are always great gifts. See samples at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.109526653252.94904.754373252&type=3&l=2db0188037

I agree that keeping Quark 7 is the cheapest way to go. I use Quark
on my 10.6.8 laptop on a quasi-regular basis, and other than the
convenience of having all apps on one machine, using 9.1 doesn't
offer me any real improvements that I would use.

I'm not an InDesign fan at all.

Not really a Mac question, but...

When I want to make a comment about one of the videos I just watched, I'm asked to log in using Google information.

I had registered long ago with Youtube and have a name & password. I'd like to use this information to log in but I'm asked for my email address, not a user name.

Is there some way to log into Youtube using the user name instead of the email address? (I tried just using the user name in the email field but that didn't work.

Thanks
Dave

To the best of my knowledge, no.
It sounds like you originally registered back when YouTube was an independent entity. That is no longer the case. It is now wholly owned and operated by Google, and Google sets the requirement for logging in using an email address.

MacBook Pro w/ Mac OS 10.8.2, iPhone 4S 64 GB and iPad 4 32 GB w/ iOS 6.0.1

Just for fun I looked in Mail's preferences and today the Default Mail Reader is set to "Opera (12.00)". I change it to Mail and close the Preferences window. I check it again right away and again it's set to Opera.

And the fun continues...

Dave, how many email applications do you have on your Mac mini, and how many of those have you set up with your email info to receive email?

So far you have told us about Eudora, Apple Mail and now Opera Mail.

Do you think that could be why you are having issues?

Try rebooting to make it stick.

21 inch iMac (new in June 2012)
2.8GHz Core i7
Memory 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Good day group.
On upgrading from OS 10.7.5 to 10.8.2, my wireless Apple Magic Trackpad and Apple wireless keyboard lost many functions. Trackpad lost all "gestures";, kept only basic movement and clicking. Keyboard lost all F-key functions, retained only basic typing.
The first immediate flaw noticed was the Bluetooth became unavailable (from the top menu bar) The bluetooth pane in System Preferences has completely disappeared.
No, the Bluetooth module in my iMac has not failed, in that complete function AND the Bluetooth pane in System Preferences return to normal under Safe Boot.

This condition was almost immediately "upped" to a 2nd level Apple Care specialist, and has had the 2nd level specialist seemingly baffled for nearly three weeks.
All the "usual" fixes have been applied with no success. Reinstall System, restart with "Option-Command-P-R"

I want to "toss" this issue out there among you Mac users, to see if any of you have experienced this, or resolved this or similar issue.
Thanks to all!
