My son has a 3rd gen iPod touch, model MC086LL, and is using iTunes 11.0.1.12. I see his games/apps listed in iTunes, but even after syncing they do not appear on the iPod. Sometimes iTunes doesn't even recognize the device.
Can anyone tell me how to accomplish this seemingly simple task?
Thanks,
John

I have no trouble syncing my 2nd gen Touch to latest iTunes.
(I don't do it often these days, but it does work.)
Sometimes you have to be sure the device is really-plugged-in on the cable.
Is the computer showing the Touch as a "device" in Explorer?
(if using Windows)
(dunno what it'd be in Mac but perhaps something similar?)
If not, the connection may not be...connected.
Try re-plugging until you get the chime. &/Or another cable.
What version iOS is he using?
My 2nd gen Touch is on 4.x
When syncing, does he get a message about apps that won't sync because
of....various reasons, some of which I've never deciphered... one of them is
an outright "requires a later iOS".
Some apps won't sync to older devices or even newer devices not updated to
latest iOS. The only solution to that (which I've done with a couple of
apps) is to have an older version stashed, then it's a bit of a dance to do
the syncing but it does work. Then be careful not to delete from device so
you don't have to do that same dance again! (this is how I have an old
version of an app on my old Touch that I'm running the lastest version of on
new-devices)

I'm replying to my own post with further info.
What I thought was a 3rd gen is actually a 2nd gen. OS version 4.2.1, Model
A1288. We just purchased a game/app that said it was compatible with iPod
touch iOS 3.2 or later, but even after syncing it does not appear on the
iPod.
Can I return this game or is this a lost cause?
Thanks for any help,
John

Have you tried searching for the apps on the device using Spotlight? There is a maximum number of items that can appear as icons on the iOS desktop, perhaps you've exceeded that.

just a word of caution. If you have a finicky connection between your touch and your laptop, you might corrupt your touch data and need to do a full restore, even restoring the operating system before reloading all your content. That happened to me several times. On my 64 gig touch, of which I have about 8 gig free. When corrupted, its shows almost nothing stored, and has issues doing sync.

I'm on XP and it does not appear in Win Explorer. Sometimes I get an error
in iTunes saying it could not recognize the iPhone, even though it's an
iPod, Error 0xE8000084.
I have 5 apps showing in itunes and only 3 of them show on the iPod.
iOS is Version 4.2.1. I get no errors when syncing.

maybe those particular games won't work on that iPod. Are they checked to
to sync? do other games sync?
i know on my old iphone if an app won't work on it itunes won't put it on.
for instance after kindle updated the new version
will no longer go on one of our iphones.
