Court rejects Apple’s request to revive Galaxy Nexus sales ban

galaxy-nexus-ics_large_extra_large

In another round of legal back and forth, a U.S. appeals court on Thursday again rejected Apple’s attempt at the Galaxy Nexus sales ban, Reuters reports. The news gathering organization characterized the court’s decision as “dashing the iPhone maker’s attempt to recover crucial leverage in the global patent wars”.

Apple could still appeal the decision to the United States Supreme Court though success is not guaranteed as the high court “has made it more difficult for patent plaintiffs to secure sales injunctions in recent years”.

The full trial is scheduled for March 2014. The Galaxy Nexus case is based on patents that were not part of the high-stake Apple v. Samsung trial which culminated when a California jury awarded Apple with $1.05 billion in damages in August 2012…(...)

Bloomberg: Apple and HBO working on Apple TV content deal

hbo go ss

HBO fans will be happy to hear that the premium TV network is reportedly working with Apple on a content deal that would bring a large chunk of its programming to the Apple TV.

As most of you know, HBO already has an iOS app for viewing content, called HBO GO. But it doesn’t support AirPlay, meaning it can’t be watched on a TV via the set-top box…(...)

NPD: iTunes dominates digital movies as physical media dies a slow death

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 03:48 PM PST

iTunes Movies

Research firm NPD today issued a report highlighting Apple’s lead concerning electronic sell through (EST) of digital movies. Now, EST comprised just sixteen percent of the larger video on demand (VOD) revenue throughout the 2012 calendar year.

At the same time, iTunes dominated the EST market with a 45 percent share. Amazon was #2 with eighteen percent, followed by the $3 Walmart-owned Vudu (fifteen percent), #4 Xbox Video (fourteen percent) and Others taking up the remaining eight percent of the market.

Movies on Blu-ray and DVD discs? These accounted for a still respectable 61 percent of home video spending on movies, excluding Netflix and other movie-streaming subscriptions. However, that figure is notably down from 64 percent in 2011, despite average prices of Blu-ray movies falling seven percent to $19.97 per unit. Steve Jobs was right, Blu-ray indeed is “a bag of hurt”…(...)

5 must have jailbreak tweaks

This is kind of interesting. Maya-Systems, which describes itself as a knowledge management technology provider, announced today that a transaction took place between it and Apple in the third quarter of last year. It seems the Cupertino company acquired 18 patents from them “relating to innovative axis-based user interface technology.”(...)

Winocm developing iOS 6.X to iOS 5.1.1 downgrade, includes A5+ devices

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 01:18 PM PST

iPhone 4 linux

Winocm tweeted today that he was working on a method for downgrading from iOS 6 to 5.1.1 that will work on all devices. This is noteworthy as downgrades on most A5+ devices were either difficult, in the case of the iPad 2, or not possible in Redsn0w once Apple stopped signing the iOS 5 firmware.

Winocm is known for his work in PS3 firmware hacking and contributes tweaks such as CameraConnector to Cydia under the name ‘rms’. Winocm seems to be working on a lot of projects: A day before the downgrade tweet, Winocm posted a video of linux booting up on an iPhone 4 to YouTube (pictured above)…(...)

‘Pages+’ adds customizable backgrounds to each Home screen page, boasts Barrel compatibility

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 01:04 PM PST

Pages + Hero

Evasi0n, the much anticipated jailbreak tool for iOS 6 compatible devices, will be available in the very near future. With that in mind, many jailbreak developers are updating their tweaks and apps, and even establishing brand new creations to prepare for the new jailbreak.

One such developer is SBCoders, the same team behind such hits as Aero and Dash. SBCoders’ latest creation, the yet to be released Pages+, continues the tradition of solid jailbreak tweaks. Pages+ allows you to customize each page on the iPhone’s Home screen. You can accomplish this by means of custom wallpaper packs, or by its built in page tinting system.

The most exciting thing about Pages+, however, is that it plays nice with Aaron Ash’s Barrel. Barrel, of course, is the jailbreak app that allows you to implement various page transitions on your iPhone. When you mix both creations together, you’re guaranteed to get some wild results. (...)

New Apple TV could hint at A5X iPad mini with Retina display

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 12:24 PM PST

iPad mini (flat, finger)

The unknown ‘Apple TV 3,2′ device caused a lot of commotion when it was first discovered in iOS 6.1 earlier this week. It has a faster processor than the current model, and a lot of folks figured it was the next-gen Apple TV.

Apple, however, crushed the hype when they announced yesterday that the 3,2 ATV was nothing more than a component change. But according to some recent chatter, there may be more to the device than meets the eye…(...)

Holiday quarter Surface RT sales barely half the shipments

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 12:15 PM PST

surface tv spot ss

Although Microsoft’s Surface RT is not yet in the bargain bin of tablets, a fire sale could appear any day. That’s the impression from a report that the software giant turned tablet player is selling as few as 55 percent of Surface’s shipped. But wait, there’s more bad news:  A “very high” rate of the Surface RT tablets are being returned to stores.

If true, Microsoft sold between 680,000 and 750,000 of the 1.25 million Surface RT tablets shipped during the fourth quarter of 2012. Little wonder, then that production of the first Surface has likely halted, according to one hardware research firm Thursday…(...)

Apple to discontinue Mac Pro in Europe on March 1

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 10:52 AM PST

Mac Pro (front, left angled 001)

Apple will reportedly discontinue the Mac Pro in Europe beginning March 1. The unexpected decision isn’t a result of low demand for Apple’s pro desktop, as conventional wisdom would have you believe. The real reason is simple, really: Apple’s aging top-of-the-line desktop just doesn’t meet a new European product regulation standards effective March 1.

The current Mac Pro line will continue to be available in other markets that don’t have the new European product certification standards in place. Apple has emailed its resellers across Europe informing them they can place Mac Pro orders up until February 18 for shipment before March 1, 2013…(...)

iPad 5 to use same thin-film touchscreen tech as iPad mini

iPad 5 mockup (Martin uit Utrecht 002)

Although reports regarding Apple’s next-generation tablet can’t seem to settle on a release date, they do seem to agree about most everything else. The iPad 5 is said to sport an all-new, mini-like design with smaller bezels and a much thinner profile.

Of course, this raises the question: how does Apple plan to make the tablet thinner while keeping its Retina display and 10-hour battery life? Well for starters, it’s reportedly going to use the same thin-film touchscreen tech found in the iPad mini…(...)

iOS 6.1 gains 22% adoption in under 2 days

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:52 AM PST

ios 6.1

Apple’s recent update to iOS 6.1 may be important more for what it says about users and the never-ending competition with Android than what new features were added to the software running iPhones, iPods and and iPads. Released earlier this week, iOS 6.1 could become the most-quickly adopted version of Apple’s mobile software. Nearly 22 percent of iOS users have installed the update in less than 48 hours, one developer claims.

Apple’s iPhone users were the fastest to adopt iOS 6.1 with nearly 24 percent installing the updated software in less than one day. Tablet users were only a bit slower with one-fifth of iPad owners installing 6.1 by the 20-hour mark. By comparison, it took a week for 44 percent of users to update to iOS 6…(...)

ZodTTD resumes work on n64ios

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:39 AM PST

kirby n64ios

If you’re an avid retro gamer like myself, you probably snagged the $1.99 preview build of n64iOS on Cydia, hoping to enjoy classic titles. Unfortunately, in it’s current state, the N64 emulator for iOS is more of a tech demo than a working emulator. Although games run at near-playable speeds on hardware as old as the iPhone 4, the many graphical glitches combined with the jumbled control scheme make most games unplayable.

Shortly after the emulator was last updated in May, ZodTTD posted on Twitter that there would be an update which would revamp the entire UI, including the ROM manager and the wonky controls. Since then, there has been no new release of n64iOS. That may be changing soon: According to a recent conversation with Will Strafach, ZodTTD is once again working on n64iOS.(...)

Loathe iPhone cases? Twelve South’s SurfacePad will change your mind

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:23 AM PST

I generally dislike cases because they add bulk to my Apple devices and hide their beautiful design. Twelve South hears your pain: today, the premium accessory maker launched the SurfacePad, a cover for the iPhone 5/4/4S that’s less than 1/10th of an inch thick. It's made from premium Napa leather and attaches with the same special adhesive used on our SurfacePad for MacBook.

It has the microfiber lining which helps protect your devices’ glass from scratches and dings, a built-in stand so you can prop up your device for FaceTime, to enjoy videos or to simply turn your iPhone into an alarm clock. The clever design gives you access to all buttons and ports – and you can charge the device with the case on.

The ultra-thin leather shields your device from dings and scratches and comes in a variety of colors and weighs less than one ounce. Go past the fold for more tidbits and a few nice PR shots…(...)

You don’t wanna miss this: National Geographic World Atlas goes free

National Geographic World Atlas 3.0.1 for iOS (iPad screenshot 004)

National Geographic Society produces some of the most compelling, fact-checked content money can buy and their World Atlas iPad app has long been my go-to reference source, not just for checking out interesting facts and trivia but for doing serious research related to the world’s countries, their economies, demographics and so forth.

They updated the app on January 11 with high-resolution Retina graphics, revamped UI and added a new feature which lets you explore a full 3D view of the globe.

Today, they’re making the app free for a limited time and you’re advised to download it now before the price goes up. Note that this is the first time ever the app has become available as a free download since its 2010 App Store debut…(...)

iPad sales up 8M units in Q4, market share down 8 percent (IDC pulls report)

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 07:37 AM PST

tablets_shipped-idc

New research shows number one tablet maker Apple shipped more iPads while also losing market share during the 2012 holiday fourth quarter. The company shipped nearly 23 million tablets during the period, a dramatic increase from the same time in 2011, when 15.1 million Apple tablets shipped.

At the same time, Apple’s overall share of the tablet market fell for the second quarter in a row, slipping to 43.6 percent from 46.4 percent during the third quarter of last year – and down from 51.7 percent a year ago, according to IDC.

Apple ended the year with 48.1 percent year-over-year growth while number two tablet rival Samsung saw its growth more than double. A combination of Android and Windows-based tablet sales helped push the South Korean firm’s share of the tablet market to 15.1 percent, up from 7.3 percent in 2011…(...)

App Store (teaser 001)

Examples keep appearing of how Apple is able to squeeze more revenue from its iPhone and iPad than rival Android. The latest data shows Apple’s App Store earned  3.5 times more  than Android’s Google Play in December. Evernote’s Penultimate handwriting app goes free, Hello gains business card scanning

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 06:47 AM PST

Acquired last year, Evernote’s Penultimate iPad app helps you jot down notes and draw sketches using your finger. It’s like having a Galaxy Note just without, you know, a pen. Penultimate 4.0 was launched this morning and Evernote kindly decided to offer it free of charge (it used to be a paid download). It’s tightly integrated with Evernote and your handwritten notes now sync fully via the cloud with your other Evernote content.

In fact, you can now open handwritten notes on any device that has the Evernote app. Plus, Evernote search is fully baked in and it’s quite clever, too: the cloud is able to parse your digital ink notes and turn them into easily searchable text. The new version also comes with more sharing options and support for eleven languages. Did I mention that Penultimate now doesn’t cost a dime?(...)
