Howdy.
Here's a fun article that's been in the news lately.
Burglers broke into a Silicon Valley Microsoft office recently but only
stole the iPads and ignored all the Microsoft equipment.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jan/08/microsoft-offices-raided-ipads-stolen-apple# >
But this type of theft of Apple products seems to have become a major
problem world wide.
I assume that many folks also saw the news that thieves broke into the
Paris Apple Store near the Paris Opera and stole more than 1 million
USD of iPads and iPhones.
An Apple Store near my house in Virginia (Clarendon) also saw a smashed
front door last year and things stolen in a fast smash and grab.

Being behind the times will generally not let you open newer versions of
files with older applications as new and more advanced features get
developed in the applications that the older versions don't know how to
handle. There are exceptions of course.
I AM in the pre-press and printing industry, and at least in Canada/USA,
InDesign (& Creative Suite) and Quark are still the industry standards.
The fans of each camp will swear their app is the leader of the two.
There are some holdouts using PageMaker ("RageMaker"), Ragtime and
Freehand and a couple of others. There are other apps in the newspaper
and magazine business that have some other apps.
The biggest benefit of InDesign is the tight integration with other
Adobe products in the Creative Suite. When it comes to PDFs, it too is
ahead of the game in that regard. Quark has a "compatible" PDF creation
engine, but can also create problem-free postscript files that can be
distilled with Acrobat to create "Adobe PDF" standardized files.
As far as opening Quarks goes, the resulting files will only have the
lowest common denominator of common attributes, so if special plug-ins
were run with Quark that do not have an InDesign equivalent, then those
attributes would not transfer. So far I have not had any problems
opening up Quark 8.5 files with CS4 or 5, though I don't run any special
plug-ins or extensions. Having "regular" Quark vs Quark Passport will
also not allow you to open Quark Passport files (this is a higher end
multilingual version.)
Current Quark touts its layouts and templates to make it easy to build
electronic documents for e-readers, tablets of various sizes and various
file formats. Early versions did not have this ability. If you need this
feature, then $350 is a (relatively) cheap upgrade if you are in this
business.... tools of the trade.
There is nothing cheap that is Professional grade. Go and ask some of
your local printers what file formats they accept. Invariably they will
answer Quark, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and PDF (in no particular
order). They will roll their eyes if you mention Word or MS Publisher.
Other applications can create compatible PDFs, and those would be
generally acceptable by printers. Always see a proof of your jobs before
approving the press-run.
===
I'm really behind the times, but am getting ready to get Creative Suite
(I can get it really cheap with an educator'
s discount) so will have InDesign. Since I know zilch about InDesign, I
was interested in reading below that Quark files can be opened in it.
Does it convert correctly or will there be problems?

Using the fabulous app WavTap, I recorded a poem being read over the internet. I clicked on the original wav file and through Apple+I, unlocked the file for anyone to access. I converted the resulting Wav file to MP4 in Dragoman, then imported into iTunes11 library. My problem is after changing the ID tags to Genre: Audiobook, Media Kind: Audiobook, Equalizer: Vocal Booster, I cannot add a picture to the Artwork ID. It is grayed out.
Anyone no how to unlock the Artwork ID?

For whatever reason to be able to edit the Artwork ID's, iTunes11 must create an MP3 version of the recorded file. I can record as WAV, convert to MP4 in Dragoman, import into my iTunes library, change all the ID's, but I can't edit the Artwork ID unless I manually (File/Create New Version/Create MP3 Version) of the file from within iTunes. Then re-change the Media Kind ID to Audiobook. Weird. But if you don't care about artwork on an iTunes file, don't bother.

Having a cd and no idea what was on it, I put it in the MacBook Pro to find out.
Now, it will not eject or it is not in there any more. I am forgetful, comes with age.
If I go to the hard drive, it is not in the list on the side and it should be.
If I go to disc utilities, it has a cd listed with the title
"MATSHITA DVD R-Uj-857. But when I highlight it and hit eject, nothing happens.
I have also tried turning the laptop off and starting it while holding the finger pad button down. No luck there either. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you don't even know if it's in there then why not try inserting another one?

Reboot holding down on the track pad or the (mouse if you have one
attached) It will eject any media you have in the drive, unless the drive
is not functioning.

Dah.! So easy and I don't think of it. I must be older than I think. There is no cd in there but why does one show up in disc utilities? Can I just ignore it. Thank you for showing me the obvious.

Kay,
The CD that is listed is the drive itself, not the disk.

My guess is that what is showing up, and if I am correct, at the very bottom on the left hand side, is a disk image you once made and the program still thinks of it, not an existing disc in the drive.
I don't know how old you think you are, but as they say a woman is as old as she feels and a man as old as the women he feels :-)

A simple web search shows that MATSHITA DVD R-Uj-857 is a drive not a disc. If the disc is not recognized, it may not show. Try Barry's suggestion of trying to load another disc, but gently.
Could you have tried it in your MacBook, rather than the MBP?

I'm apparently missing earlier posts in this thread, but have you tried just ejecting the image from within Disk Utility?

Ah, sorry. I wish I used Eudora still, and could Queue my messages before sending them. Unfortunately, I'm in Apple Mail.app now and sent my message to you. I see that you did try to eject from Disk Utility. So now I have no other suggestion.
