Yeah for some reason, Apple does not burn the serial number into the replacement boards. Even if you ship it in to their repair facilities. I guess it might cause confusion with the serial number on the case. Usually, it is not a big issue.

BTW, great story, and sad first on-site service tech. Glad to hear it eventually came out to the good.

p.s. The dirty little secret - my MacPro does NOT have a machine readable serial number. Some programs, like Crucial & MacSales memory programs, can't find out what kind of computer you're running.

I don't own Apple stock, don't work for them, just buy their products MacBook Pro, former iMac owner, 2 iPads, iPhones and will be purchasing a new iMac soon. And I will buy AppleCare--just give me piece of mind and the ability to talk to Apple on the phone and at the Genius Bar.

I very highly recommend this book:

Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Mountain Lion Edition
About $20

or

It should be able to answer all of your questions as you move forward.

I can never remember the syntax for find so I use:
ls -R | wc -l

This gives a different result to find. I think that find gives the correct
answer.

There is an article on Apple's support website. The driver is available for XP and Vista 32/64bit (It might or might work on Win7):
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US

Should you run into trouble, you might find this useful:
http://www.mac-guides-and-solutions.com/dvd-sharing.html

In case the above doesn't work, he should be able to share his CD-/DVD-Drive as described here:
https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=13067

Good Luck

Thanks, all, you have been quite helpful, and I enjoyed looking at all the things the trackpad can do, and am putting some of them into practice.

One more email question. On my PC, when I am in an email account, like Yahoo or Gmail, I can just put a person's name in and the email addy comes up to click on. And I have groups, where I may have 10-15 people in one group and all I do is put in the name of the group and it goes to everyone. Very few of those are in contacts, and no groups in my contacts.

Do I have to enter all my PC contacts into my Mac contacts? And is there a way to put them in groups?

Thanks,

Carol
BTW, I already love it and would never give it back; i just need some tweaking

You should be able to import your old contacts from your PC into Contacts in the Mac. They may also import into groups if they are already set up that way. If not, you can select all the contacts you want to be in particular group and create a group from the selection or create a group and drag the contacts you want into that Group.

Depending on where you currently have your contacts stored, you may either be able to sync with Contacts (Google) or export as a Vcard and then import into Contacts.

I have a friend who doesn't like the new iMacs. Are the refurbished iMacs from Apple a good deal? What are his best options?
