You could try repartitioning the external TM drives, not simply erasing, then back up to them again. But I have never used multiple alternating backup drives. That's new to me.

I might try that on the 3TB drive, since I can't open the backup folder from the finder anyway, even though the backups I see when I enter TM would appear to be on that drive.

I was getting ready to repartition the 3TB drive, but I thought I try some experimentation first.

I unmounted the 3TB drive and entered TM. The backups were even hours (e.g., 2,4,6 ) and corresponded with the backups on the 1TB drive. This is exactly the opposite of what I observed with both drives mounted. I then remounted the 3TB drive and reentered TM and noted no change, still showing even hours.

I removed the 3TB drive from the TM backup drives in the TM System Preference Pane and reselected it. Nothing changed.

However, talk about WEIRD - this is truly weird. When I check the size of the 3TB drive in Disk Utility, is shows 3TB with 985.11GB used. When I check the size of the Backups.backupdb file on that disk in the Finder, it shows the size to be 7.27 TB - yes you read that correctly, it's 7.27 TB. What on earth is going on here?

Later...

I repartitioned the 3TB disk (GUID partition map, HFS Journaled) and selected it as a backup disk in TM. According to the info in the TM Preference Pane window, TM would backup alternately to each drive.

I now can open the Backups.backupsdb folder on each drive, and the sharing and permissions are identical to those on my other drives - no Custom or Wheel, just me-read & write, staff - read & write, and everyone - read only.

I'm wondering if I forgot to repartition the drive when I got it. It's an OWC Mercury Elite Pro drive. I know I deleted all the files on the drive when I got it.

One other bit of real strangeness: When I selected "backup now" in TM, and looking at the sidebar in a Finder window, I see that the icon for My Time Machine drive (the 1TB drive) is indicating activity (the little circle is churning) and my Time Machine 2 (the 3TB drive) is indicating no activity; however, when I open the drives and look at the backup folders on both drives, I find that the backup is actually occurring on the 3TB drive! A check of the TM System Preference Pane also shows the backup being accomplished on the 3TB drive. Will these wonders ever cease.

My never ending thanks to "HAL9000" for his invaluable suggestion!

Howdy.

Barry had some good info.

You might also access Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account
Information tab

Check the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section and check on the Use only
this server check box.

You may need to do this for each account you have set up.

I am having a strange problem and don't know if it is something I did, or
if the latest upgrade to Mountain Lion did it.

I put my photos into folders. Previously, I could click on them and they
would open. I could even open as many as I wanted and they would appear on
a column on the left hand side.

Now when I click on them , they kinda flash as though they were going to
open..but nothing happens. However, If I right click and chose open, they
open on a beautiful black background, and on the left hand side column
not only is the picture or pictures that I have chosen, but also some that
were recently opned, even though they may no longer be in their folder.

In order to close out, I have to do a command q, or else I can not get back
to desktop.

I am running a 6 core Mac pro, 16 gig of ram, and Mountain lion(up to date)

thanks,
Jeannie

Need more info. What are you trying to view them with: Aperture, iPhoto, Preview, what?

Considering you are talking about a column on the left side, I guess it is in iPhoto? When launching it hold down the command and option keys and you will be given the option to repair various things.

Hi, I think I'm missing some basic point here, but . . .

I use an Airport Express to stream music over wireless from my Time Capsule (Router). I have changed the wireless password on the TC and now the AE can't get on the network - how do I change the wireless password for the AE? I've tried Airport Utility but that expects to be able to connect via wireless! Help please!

I don't have either of those but I would change the TC's password back so
the AE can connect (or remove encryption altogether), then set the new
password on the AE first, then set it on the TC last of all.

What is a good database. Excel crashes, often the links
don't work. Does the imac version of excel crash like
m.s's? I use a lot of spreadsheets, used to have FOCUS
on the corporations computer system, but being retired
excel just crashes too much. I don't know what 'R' means.
I getting ready to buy a new computer and don't know if
imac runs better?
The experts at the corporation didn't think much of FOCUS PC
and then there was a move to SQL. Being able to access
fields of differant files and run a report is nice, but
excel doesn't do a good job of it. I don't know whats
the best to set up a sysstem on a PC.
I used to be able to run FIRST CHOICE but the new computers
don't allow it to run. My old IBM PC back years ago worked
great with FIRST CHOICE but now thats obsolete. And I didn't
have all the m.s. crashes I do now.

I installed Mountain Lion a few days ago on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

On the iMac I get a pop up message that says that my computer's local host name has been changed from Bobs-iMac-4.local to Bobs-iMac-5.local with the number going up each session. Yesterday it went from 3 to 4 and the day before it went from 2 to 3.

It tells me to go into System Preferences, click sharing, click edit and type the name in the Local Hostname field. If I do this should I type Bobs-iMac-1.local and will that fix my problem?

Other than this everything seems to be working fine.

I will post my MacBook Pro problem in a different message.

TIA,

Bobby

After installing Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro a few days ago I encountered a printing problem.

I usually print to an HP LaserJet Professional P1102W with this computer. it will not print until I cancel the print job in the printer Queue or close the lid on the computer.

Is there a setting that got wacky and needs to be changed?

TIA,

Bobby

Did you upload the latest driver from the HP site? Try that.

I've had problems with my HP products with every OS update, FWIW.

A solution came from a member of another Mac-related list.

There is an "X-setting" parameter in Eudora that determines that Eudora sets the Default Mail Reader value. To turn it off, follow these steps.

It works!

Cheers,
Dave

MAKE EUDORA THE DEFAULT MAIL PROGRAM (y = YES, n = NO)

1. Open a new message in Eudora.

2. Paste this (including brackets) into the text field:

3. Command-click on the pasted text and enter "n" (without quotes) in the field.
4. Click the "Set Setting" button.
5. Quit Eudora without saving the message.

For a complete list of settings that you can set in this manner, see:
